I first read this book in my late teens after consuming Michael Cunningham's The Hours. I was desperate for more his characters - obsessed with his inspiration.
Oh, Clarissa - you are an amazing representation for those of your generation.
The synopsis I read called this book the best of Virginia Woolf's impressive library. Every review I read loved the book but each for a different section, chapter, even page. So, I read it. What I realized after finishing this outstanding novel is that there is something in it for every reader, something in it calls to each of us. As the cast of everyday characters goes about their routines, we experience their lives in the first person, almost as if we are them. It takes a very skilled writer to bring so many readers into a book where each of us finds something of ourselves. It should be required reading for any literary group, just to see how they respond. I'm recommending it to my reading circle.
The new edition of Mrs. Dalloway has been given a make over! This edition is eye-catching and visually appealing to the reader.
Mrs. Dalloway is a classic and I loved rereading this edition. The cover is beautiful! This is the only book from Ms. Woolf that I have read, but I do plan on reading more.
Virginia Woolf is a stream of consciousness writer and here she brings us Mrs. Dalloway, a day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway as she prepares for a party and gets lost in thought. The story also follows Septimus Smith, a man on the brink of madness, suffering from what would now be called PTSD, but then was known as shell-shock after the war. The story comes together in a brilliant sort of way. The writing is the star here and will certainly make you look out for more written by Virginia Woolf. Highly recommended!
