Joe Kenda definitely knows how write and narrate a story. He proves that with his latest book; KILLER TRIGGERS.
According to Joe, there are a few "triggers" (reasons) why a person would commit murder. Those triggers are:
1. Fear
2. Rage
3. Revenge
4. Money
5. Lust
And finally
6. Sheer and utter madness
In this audiobook, he gives examples from his decades of experience as a homicide detective.
Divided into six sections, this audiobook will keep listeners on the edge of their seats.
Because the stories are true, and because the writer/narrator is a retired cop, listeners know they are hearing the explicit and unvarnished truth.
I rate KILLER TRIGGERS as 5 out of 5 Stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
True crime fans will love this audiobook just as much as I do.
I was given a copy of Killer Triggers. Being a true crime reader, I was particularly taken with this book. I enjoyed Kenda's first book, but this one I couldn't put down. I read it in one sitting. I am truly glad that I never had any reason to cross this man's path in my life, but love that he shares the wisdom that he cultivated with the rest of us. The people that he was forced to interact with could turn anyone's blood to ice. It was a great read.
3.5/5 stars. I enjoyed the stories in this book but some of the author's comments about the suspects were.. not great. Many true crime fans will enjoy this book, especially the audiobook since the author reads it himself.
I have always loved Joe Kenda's method of storytelling. He embodies so many emotions in a considerate and compassionate way. When I requested this book, I had no idea that he narrated the audiobook. And how appreciative I am that he did. I was hooked from beginning to end.
I loved "Homicide Hunter" because of Joe Kenda's way of laying out cases and humanity. So I was thrilled to get the chance to listen to him narrate a part of his career. And it did not disappoint. Some of the cases I recognized from the show, but that's okay. It's a fascinating look at humanity.
(Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for a chance to listen to and review this book. I apologize for how long the review took to post.)
Joe Kenda's audio version of his book, Killer Triggers: Murder Comes Down to Sex, Drugs, or Money, was exactly what I would expect from him. Five stars.
SYNOPSIS
Killer Triggers by Joe Kenda is an unabridged audiobook that is a phantasmagoria of real world criminals and their motivations. Sometimes hard to stomach, Kenda delivers a phlegmatic narration that contrasts starkly from the horrors that he describes. At times, there is a slight trepidation in his voice, tone, or tremor. His varied tonation indicates a deeper emotional recollection of the crimes that still evoke unease in his soul.
One particular recollection of Kenda’s, involved the events that occurred at The Avenue in Colorado Springs. Two Fort Carson Soldiers, Army Specialist Layne Shmidtke and Sargent Joseph Reeves, were attacked on September 11, 1991. Over 700 witnesses saw the crime. Kenda explains how his 8 man team worked tirelessly to identify all those involved and discover their motivations.
Kanda details the grimness of the job that murder detectives do on a daily basis. Sometimes he punctuates it with a hint of irreverence to warm the cold horror of some of the cases he’s been involved in. The worst crimes involve small children. Those of a more delicate disposition may want to avoid those accounts.
There is a very real sense throughout that Kenda is still all cop inside, evidenced by his television presentations and his writing. He comes across as the kind of man you would want on your side in a criminal investigation. He is loyal, forensically aware and intelligent. Just as importantly, he had a dogged determination to leave no stone unturned ensuring that the criminals were brought to justice.
CONCLUSION
Killer Triggers contains a host of disturbing content. At 8 hours and 30 minutes, it is about the average length for a work of its kind. Many true crime readers out there may consider it less impactful than some other similar works due to the staccato pace. The crimes stack up quickly and contemplation comes once the book is finished.
Killer Triggers is a stark reminder to us all that Law Enforcement Officers have a most unique job. A job that requires them to be social workers one moment, traffic management personnel at another, and defenders of the population sometimes through the use of deadly force. Can we be surprised that the men and women of the Police suffer health and psychological issues? They are forced to be Mary Poppins one moment and Judge Dredd the next. Is it really any wonder that alcoholism, domestic abuse, and suicide plague the Law Enforcement community?
Kenda can put a brave face on it, but the nerve shredding sights, smells, and emotional baggage created by investigating these horrific crimes, scar the individual permanently. The memories still haunt him. At other time he uses graveyard humor to deal with horrors he witnessed. Dealing with monstrous crimes, as Joe Kenda and his team did day-after-day, seems to leave little room for sentiment. The most egregious crimes are those involving children. These undercurrents of psychological turmoil were not covered, but could be felt throughout the book. Unsurprisingly, Kenda’s delivery is emotionally separate and heavily redacted in terms of police operation methods .
If you were a family member of a murder victim, Kenda is the kind of Law Enforcement Officer that you would demand. He is Intelligent, doggedly, determined, forensically and legally aware. The kind of law officer that will turn over every stone to capture the criminal that stole your loved one.
I received an advanced copy of the audiobook from the publisher via Netgalley for an honest review.
First, my favorite part is this novel is READ by Joe Kenda!!! I was so excited when I saw this audiobook on Netgalley because I have watched his show on Investigation Discovery off and on for years and it's just so interesting. Plus, now I live in Colorado Springs, so that is neat....and at times terrifying!
I quite enjoyed the entire book, all the different stories and experiences and especially when he spoke about his wife. Can I please meet this woman, she sounds like a badass and I want to be her friend!
I do appreciate the entire spectrum of emotions with Joe Kenda as he tells the stories of his career with the good and the bad, the frustrating and the uplifting, as well as giving extra knowledge and insight into what goes into being a detective. This was really awesome and enjoyable and I would absolutely pick up another of his books in a heartbeat.
Love Joe!! Having already become a fan through his TV shows - I really enjoyed hearing him discuss some of his stranger cases.
Kenda has truly had an amazing career and should be proud of the work he's done and the things he's accomplished.
Thanks for this book Joe!
“Criminals are not often clever but they are cunning. If they think you are an idiot, they’ll think they can play you. And you play along while setting the trap.”
Killer Triggers: Murder Comes Down to Sex, Drugs or Money is a non fiction true crime book spotlighting cases that Lieutenant Joe Kenda investigated during his impressive career.
Any other #IDAddicts out there? If you have ever watched the ID channel then you’ll know who Joe Kenda is. He is the Colorado Springs homicide detective with a 92% closure rate 😱👏🏻👏🏻. What the what?! Helloooo send him to Connecticut please! But I digress.
This guy is phenomenal! His crime fighting history is unprecedented in American law enforcement and his no nonsense don’t bullshit me attitude gets. Shit. Done. Lt. Kenda narrates this and he is fab! It’s like watching his show, but imagining the cases instead of watching them unfold on screen.
If you like ID or have a morbid fascination with murder and death like I do 🤪, listen to this book!!
Thank you to Netgalley, Blackstone Publishing and the author for this audio arc in exchange for an honest review. Available now!
RATING: 3.5 STARS
2021; Blackstone Publishing & Audio
Narrated by Joe Kenda
If you enjoy watching Homicide Hunter: Lt. Joe Kenda, true crime documentary show, you will love this book. The audiobook is read by Kenda, which really enriches the book. I read his last book, I Will Find You: Killer Cases from My Life in Crime and enjoyed it I could hear his voice in my head. BUT listening to this one on audio hearing his actual wry voice just makes it so much better. I Will Find You is more of his memoir on how he became a homicide detective; Killer Triggers is more about the cases on his show. Kenda often says there are only so many motives for murder, and this book demonstrates them. I would recommend watching a few episodes of Homicide Hunter as it will add your enjoyment of this book.
***I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from the publisher through Edelweiss, and a copy of the audiobook through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.***
As a huge fan of Joe Kenda's tv series, I was so thrilled to have received this audiobook copy of Killer Triggers. I enjoyed listening to Kenda's narration, yes he did the narration himself. If you enjoy true crime, you must pick up this audiobook. Then perhaps after you've done that, you might want to check out Joe Kenda's true crime tv series. You will not be disappointed.
This book offers Kenda's memories of homicide cases that he investigated or oversaw. In each case, he examines the trigger that led to death. He "chose this theme for the book because even though the why of a murder case may not be critical in an investigation, it can sometimes lead us to the killer."
This book gives a quick glance into the daily life of a detective- and the difficulties (mental health impact, family issues, nightmares, etc.) that come along with being a police officer. I enjoyed this book and Kenda is a good storyteller, mixing dry humor with the dark nature of the topics being discussed.
I really felt like I was watching Kenda's TV show, he always feels down to earth and real. I loved this book, he made every case that he talked about easy to follow and understand. He gave a victims dimension, I felt like I could picture these people and the trauma they went through. It was heartbreaking and I'm glad they recieved justice.
As a long time view of "Homicide Hunter", I was pretty excited to read Kenda's book. I was even more excited to listen to it, narrated by the man himself. It was the perfect thing to listen to while running. All the best parts of Homicide Hunter with a little extra dose of Kenda. We get a little more of his perspective, his insights on cases and reflections on human nature. It was a little over the top at times, but that was balanced by humorous recollections. .
Killer Triggers is quintessentially Kenda. The hero of Homicide Hunter has done an outstanding job of illustrating why people are triggered to kill. Joe Kenda narrates the book, and makes it all the more enjoyable with his dry tone and hint of sarcasm.
Kenda has chosen, from among the many cases of his career, those cases that best illustrate man's inhumanity and predatory tendencies. These cases run the gamut from love to money to obsession.
I truly loved this book. I would highly recommend this title to all Kenda fans and anyone else who enjoys true crime.
In the interest of full disclosure, I received a free digital audio copy of this title to review from Net Galley.

This is Joe Kenda's second book, and I enjoyed it as much as the first one. I especially liked listening to it from him. I find that he has an enjoyable way of telling a story and of the cases that he was involved in while he was a detective. I thought the book was well written and it was enjoyable to read. Of course, I had a hard time putting it down! I hope he continues to write more books. It was a great read. And I love the fact that his focus was always the victims and their loved ones. I do admire him greatly
I requested this one because it might be a 2021 title I would like to review on my Youtube Channel. However, after reading the first several chapters I have determined that this book is not my tastes. So I decided to DNF this one rather than push myself to finish it only to give it a poor review.
How can you not love Joe Kenda's voice. This book is just such a fun way for Joe to go over some of the different cases he encountered during his long time in the Colorado Springs Police department. Having him be the narrator of his book just adds more emotion and personally allowed me to feel more connected to the cases he was talking about. Overall a great book, and a perfect read if you want a book on true crime, or if you enjoy his show. This book does not disappoint.
I received this for an honest review from Netgalley. This was sent to me as an audiobook so I listened to this.. This was interesting as Kenda reads his own book and gives the chapters as if he is teaching one what it is like to be a homicide detective.. He tells of the various cases he worked and their outcomes in capturing the killers. It was interesting to note that Kenda did not treat rich people better than poor people. All people deserve to be treated well by the police officers that serve the cities in which they reside. The is the best true story I have read in a while and I would recommend this to everyone.
