This was a very interesting book but wasn't for me. I read over half of it and just could not get into it.
I've only just come back to my Netgalley account and have been reading through some of the books I downloaded. This one always caught my eye because I love cosmic horror. In my opinion there is not enough cosmic horror.
The Astral Wanderer and the Forest of Tears tells the story of an unnamed narrator, who is searching a strange hellscape for his daughter. His daughter who he cannot remember, but is certain exists.
This is a strange story that is very descriptive & immersive. It kept me interested and always asking about the world the protagonist was in. What makes this book different is the mystery and how it pulls you in.
My only criticism would probably be the thing that draws me in. I don't mind the overly descriptive prose, but some people might find it too much.
In the Astral Wanderer and the Forest of Tears, the author (Langlois) creates a horrifying and immersive story that keeps the reader excited and, most importantly, thirsting for more the more they read. Everything, from the unknown protagonist to the strange landscape he navigates and inhabits, is a mystery in want of pursuit, I am particularly drawn to cosmic horror novels and, while this one deviates from the usual formula in a genre-bending manner, I emerged from the experience quite delighted and horrified by the story.
The one part of the book that I would point out as both a strength and a weakness is the descriptive language that Langlois utilizes. On the one hand, it pulls the reader into the story and immerses them into the world that they must now navigate along with the protagonist. On the other hand, it is sometimes just a bit much, and personally, I found some of the prose distracted from the storyline. However, one could argue that this is beneficial to the work as a whole in a thematically appropriate way. I would not consider it too big of an issue.
I truly cannot wait for the next book. It has extreme promise as a series.
