The beginning of this book dragged by, and it took me a long time to understand the plot. Unfortunately, I never really got "into" this book. Thank you to NetGalley and ECW Press Audio for a copy of this book for an honest review.
I have stopped and started and restarted this audiobook more than 3 times and just cannot seem to finish the book. The storyline is of interest to me, it’s not very often that I’ve found (audio) books that speak to the camps in America and the hardships our Japanese citizens encountered after Pearl Harbor. The narrators do a fine job with their characters, accents and inflections are well done. Storyline is believable and easy to follow. I do hope to revisit this title again in the future and hopefully I will have a more complete review.
While the historical context The Three Pleasures is set in is a vital but often neglected narrative of Canadian history, shaky narration and a huge cast of characters makes it difficult to follow this slow-paced story.
Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook. Interesting story and told from various POV. Took me a while to get into this.
Probably rounding up from 3.5
This book is written from the perspective of a Canadian of Japanese decent at the time of the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the internment of those of Japanese decent in the days, months that followed. As a white woman from the Midwest, I struggled with listening to the protagonists sympathy to the Japan mother country ... although I am glad that I read/listened to this book to have a better understanding and insight to the thoughts of those of Japanese decent.
But isn't that why we read? To take us to a different time, different place, different perspective.
Thank you Net Galley and the author/Terry Watada for the opportunity to listen to this ARC audio copy.
