Somewhat futuristic/sci-fi/dystopian setting, but really this is about grief and developing surety in yourself and how vengeance can become understanding. The book’s last lines are some of the most moving I’ve read.

For those expecting a romantic adventure aka Matched, shift your expectations and read this book anyway. The titular character's internal struggle is not about falling in love, but about navigating a need to trust others in a world where trust is a high-stakes experience. Poe is complex and withdrawn from others, but open to necessary transformation as her story unfolds.

I did not mean to request this...so Oop sorry. Did not realize it was just a sample. But okay, here is my short review of what I thought...

I thought it was okay...nothing special to me.
I do want to read ‘’matched” by Ally Condie through, I heard it’s a good book.
Will probably not go and pick up a copy of this book because did not connect to it...not saying I never will...but likely will not.

But I want to say thank you NetGalley for letting me have this free arc for an exchange for an honest review of what I thought of this sample book. :)

Big fan of Ally Condie's previous books so loved getting this sneak peek! Poe seems like an anti heroine and I can't wait to read more- another one for the TBR.

This sample has the perfect amount of intrigue to pique my interest. I was engaged and hooked right off the bat.

Look, I'm always here for women-hellbent-on-revenge stories, so yes, I definitely enjoyed this sampler.

I read the Matched books years ago and actually had to go doublecheck that this was set in the same world. Besides a few throwaway references, it doesn't seem to have any overlap, which was honestly a positive for me as, well, it was a while ago. In this book, we're thrust straight into the action and get the (very traumatic) origin story for our revenge-seeking heroine/villain. At the end of the sample, I was definitely interested in reading more, and I've already added it to my TBR!

I wasn't aware, when I started reading this, that it was set in the Matched universe. I loved the Matched trilogy, and I loved this. I wish there was a sequel, honestly

I read an excerpt from The Last Voyage of Poe Blythe courtesy of NetGalley and Penguin Random House Books and, while it was only an excerpt, I really enjoyed it and found it compelling. I am now committed to reading the entire book.

17-year-old Poe Blythe is seeking revenge for the killing of her boyfriend by river pirates. Tech-savvy, she quickly becomes captain of the Outpost's last mining ship which sails up and down the Serpentine River mining gold. The book is filled with adventures, schemes, fighting, betrayal, treachery - perfect for escaping the mundane world. The book also follows another journey - that of Poe Blythe, as she moves through the anger, grief, and hopelessness to a better understanding of who she is and what she needs to do to find peace.

I really enjoyed this excerpt and I was massively disappointed that it was over honestly. It reminds me somewhat of skyward and I am interested to have a main character recovering from grief rather than searching for love. We don’t have to have another love interest thank-you. I did find it annoying to have to flip back and forth to check how much time had passed. Would be great if along with the date it said the time since.

I adored this sampler and cannot wait to actually read the entire book! I really like the character of Poe. I feel she is strong and independent!

A lovely sneak peek to what seems like it will be a good book. I enjoyed this and I cant wait to read the full novel! I was immediately drawn in by the amazing praise from Renee Ahdieh and Sabaa Tahir. and this book is also written uniquely. I can tell this will be a top read of this year.

Being that this was only a sample, Im having to base a review more on if I would want to continue reading this book.

So based on the prologue and the first couple chapters, I do not think I will pick the physical copy of this book. It wasnt bad but it just didnt intrigue me enough to want to continue it.

The prologue with the emails being sent from main base and outpost had my attention but as I got into the actual story its ending up to be a girl making essentially a ship that mines gold but also if their enemies get near it, I guess it grinds them up. And she created this to avenge her boyfriend they killed. Seems a bit overkill no? Im sure there is more to this story but its just didnt make me all that interested.

I wasn't the hugest fan of this book. I like Ally Condie's last set of books, but this one fell flat to me.

This is a awesome book. It is a great book and will be a nice additions to our collection. When this book was given to me I was not aware I needed to read and review, I thought it was something I could just read at my leisure.

In this excerpt, Poe loses her love Call who is shot in the back when the ship is being raided. As the ship returns, she finds out that she is not going to die for losing the gold. She will be the captain of a different ship on what might be a trap. Poe doesn’t trust the Admiral who has promoted her and will be the first to mine the Serpentine River. Is it a trap?

An intriguing story that can’t help but be disappointed that I only got to read the excerpt. It appears to have revenge, treachery, and hope in this science fiction novel.

It has been forever since I read a book by Ally Condie. I remember loving the way she writes and I was not dissapointed, "The Last Voyage of Poe Blythe" seems to be an interesting enough book. sadly, there hasn't been too much happening in the sampler besides many exchanges of letter which were exceptionally difficult to read because the print was so tiny.
Poe receiving command of the ship, however, was interesting to read and I am slightly curious for the book.

I received a free sampler via Netgalley and the publishers in exchange for an honest review.

I've read the Matched trilogy years ago. I don't remember exactly what happened, if we have already met Poe, so I'll just review this as a new story.
This looks promising. Poe is out for blood and I'm totally in for a "bad/villainous" protagonist. Even if the event that made her "bad" was really easy to predict (not happened in years... until the protagonist comes around, obviously), I like how the character developed. However, I'm also convinced that eventually the "villain-protagonist" will redime herself, understand that the raiders have been the good guys all along (maybe fall in love with one of them?) and fight against her Admiral.

P.S. I'm not gonna comment on a 17-years old being the captain of the ship because this is a ya and I'm willing to accept it in the great scheme of things. However, maybe she could have been a bit older... than a minor?

Having read the Matched trilogy (and been disappointed by the lackluster ending of it), I decided to give this a try.

Instead of going into more depth about the Otherlands, or the Enemy, or something else we might have heard of in the trilogy, it seems to have absolutely nothing to do with the original series, except to acknowledge that this group once belonged to the Society, until Society was finished with them. With no explanation of the Society given, the author clearly assumes that her readers will have all the background knowledge they need from reading the Matched trilogy, which may not always be the case.

An intriguing, but ultimately not compelling sample. Though I would like to know why the Admiral is so obsessed with gold.

This excerpt was the perfect introduction I needed to confirm what I was already pretty certain about, that I wanted to read this book. I absolutely adored the MATCHED series when it came out ten years ago. I have had this book on my TBR for a while but reading this excerpt made me push it right to the top of my TBR. I'm going to make it one of my first reads of 2021

I was given a sample of "The Last Voyage of Poe Blythe" in exchange for an honest review.
I think it is unfair to write a review based on a preview of the book- had I only read the preview, I would have given this book a four-star rating. The beginning of the book did a great job setting up the plot: Mining for gold, ships/dredges, a group of people abandoned by their government on the outskirts of somewhere trying to survive... all stuff that I was excited to read about!

Once the sample ended, I decided to read the rest of the book- it has been released for a while and readily available at the library. That's where the book went downhill- the main character is out for revenge after the murder of her boyfriend two years earlier. She... builds an armed dredge that can ONLY be understood by her, Without experience, she captains her boat and undertakes a mission that becomes of vital importance to the entire population of the people living in her area.

I couldn't believe it. I tried very hard to believe that Poe was super awesome pants, that she was as bad a88 as she was written out to be, but I couldn't do it. The rest of the crew were not much better- I didn't have any attachment to any character whatsoever. Poe does grow as a person, but I did not easily believe her transition or understand her motive as she changed.

"The Last Voyage of Poe Blythe" has an interesting premise and I think that there are some readers that will enjoy this much more than I did. I read that there was an Easter Egg for readers of Condie's "Matched" series. I have not read this series, so I don't know how they relate. This book is a stand-alone and is to be read by itself.

Thank you Penguin Young Readers Group and Netgalley for a sample of this book. I do prefer full books and am also thankful to my local library for providing me with a copy to finish off the sampler.
