I acquired a copy from Penguin via Netgalley in exchange for an honest first impression of the first couple of chapters.
I've never read the Matched series but from we're shown here it doesn't seem essential that you read them first.
That said, boy does this start with a bang! There is a lot that goes on even in these few chapters, it's a good set up and makes for a very strong, very sympathetic main character. You can see where Poe gets her current personality and motivations from and it'll be interesting to see how that changes in the course of the book.
I lovve the way Condie writes, it gives just enough description to work, but it's very quick and easy. I could see myself just flying through the book when it's finally released.
Super intriguing. Great set up. We really get to know the world, even if it's only an excerpt. I definitely want to keep on reading and see what happens !
"I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."
The excerpt was definitely enough to peak my interest. I can't wait to read the full book.
I didn't realize this was just a snippet of the book and now I NEED TO READ MORE. So so good. I was immediately sucked in and loved the characters.
I’m a huge fan of this author and let me just say that this little excerpt was NOT ENOUGH. can’t wait to read this entire book
This sampler was a sad read. The main character goes through such a harrowing experience in the first few chapters that you really feel for her. It seems predictable, although I could be entirely wrong about the outcome between the raiders and the Outpost. I enjoyed the writing style. The action started quickly, there was enough description of the world to understand the basics of what was happening, and the character is already mildly fleshed out. Poe wants revenge, and it will be an interesting story to read (although I anticipate a fair amount of violence based on the first several chapters).
Thank you to NetGalley and Dutton Books for providing a copy of this eARC sampler for review.
After reading the first few chapters I'm totally hooked.
Poe faces a tragedy with determination and talent that makes her invaluable to an abandoned society. So she ends up a young captain of a dredge. When I read this free sample I didn't realize it was already out - so so so so happy! This is a book I must buy.
Thank you #netgalley
I loved The Last Voyage of Poe Blythe. Even though it's about gold mining bu boat, this is a story about the human race's future and not their past.
Poe and Call are out on the deck during the evening while there mining ship goes down river. Call is Poe's best friend and soul mate but his life is cut short when he is killed by raiders, savages that left their civilized town to strike out on their own. Poe channels her revenge into building armor and raps for the boat; she will find a way to kill every last raider. Usually, Poe stays behind on these voyages but her captain has something different in mind: they will collect the gold and she will go with the ship to insure that it comes to no harm. Poe finds herself on the water once again. Will she be able to make it up to Call? What kind of leader will she be? And who is spying on her?
Alley Condie always takes you deep into her world and immerses you in the story. By blending past events and give them a future glaze, Condie has created a new world that isn't just a mimic of other dystopian fiction. Placing them in a river environment gave our characters new challenges instead of rehashing old cliches.
I loved the character of Poe. Poe is not your typical captain. In too many fictitious work She is not arrogant or uppity. While she fights to be a strong captain, she has doubts. She second guesses herself and others. It is this inner dialogue that makes you like Poe. There is more than just revenge here; she also wants to be a good captain to her ship.
My only criticism is the ending. It is the same one from Matched and Atlantis: you never see them put their world back together. These stories are how they get away from the danger and the damage. But never do we get to see the world these characters create.
Overall, i loved the book and would encourage you to read it.
This sneak peek of The Last Voyage of Poe Blythe was very intriguing. Within a relatively short amount of pages, we already see Poe go through an intense transformation and the scene is set for what is sure to be a thrilling story. This also sounds like it will be a poignant tale of how to deal with grief/trauma. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of this high-stakes adventure soon! The Last Voyage of Poe Blythe is available now. Thank you to Ally Condie, Dutton Books for Young Readers, and Netgalley for a free sneak peek in exchange for honest feedback.
I wasn’t sold on the beginning, but once the action picked up and the main character went from a lovesick dredger to a hardened captain out for revenge, I was in. I will definitely plan on picking up the rest of this story sometime soon.
I love the relationship between the characters in this book, they click so well which is so beautiful to see. I love them already and the little banter. I wasn’t aware until reading that it was only an excerpt, Ally Condie is easily my favourite author. I love the setting and the adventure aspects. The initial letters are kind of confusing but very niche which I like.
I only received a sample which included the first couple of chapters.
The introduction is interesting, but I found the world building to be lacking. I just had a hard time visualizing both the characters and the world they lived in.
I do love a revenge story, so I could see the story line becoming a little more intriguing. But sadly the sampler I read didn't strike my interest enough to entice me to purchase the entire story.
This book was received as an ARC from PENGUIN GROUP Penguin Young Readers Group - Dutton Books for Young Readers in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
I had smiles all across my face when I finished this book and so much admiration for the tenacity of Poe Blythe that I appreciated this book a lot more. The struggle Poe had while dealing with the river raiders that robbed her outpost and so many constant communication to the base and for them denying any form of communication and delivery for need of survival. I always admire women in the armed forces and the power they have to fight their way through the struggle which includes earning the respect of the higher command that might be a life or death situation. Just when she thought all was lost when she found out that one of her crew members betrayed her and she was going down like a sinking ship but the power of love is the strongest of all especially the love of yourself and what you stand for. Can't wait to share this book with our teen book club and hear their thoughts.
We will consider adding this title to our YA collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
I normally hesitate to read samples, but no regrets here. This was such an addictive taste of whats to come. I'm always good for a good revenge tale, and this one is at sea?! I've gone ahead and ordered a finished copy because I NEED TO KNOW.
I received this as an excerpt to read for free in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and Dutton Books for Young Readers for giving me access
It opens as ecomms or emails being sent between two people or societies. I love books that do this. It makes the dialogue and the story more interactive to me.
We get a brief history of the world and then are thrown into the present only to be told "The End". Luckily I do have the hardcover and I am even more tempted to read it sooner than I was before.
This is a review of the preview of "The Last Voyage of Poe Blythe" by Allie Condie eArc preview from NetGalley, not a review of the entire book.
I first heard about this book because of the book trailer for it on Bestseller Trailers, so when I saw this book on NetGalley as an eARC preview, I was excited to check it out further.
I loved the way this book builds the world and sets the tone before we even meet the main character. The correspondence immediately hooks you. I recently read another book (Caraval) that also began with letters between two characters, and that same technique worked just as well in Poe Blythe. The inciting incident is very compelling and does make me interested in reading the rest of this book. It's now on my TBR!
I'll update this review and expound on it further when I've read the entire book, but based on the preview, 5 stars from me!
Teenage ship-captain hellbent on revenge? Hell yes! I really enjoyed the Matched trilogy and I suspect I will enjoy the full story of this one as well. It's great so far, and I really liked the transcripts at the beginning. I've already requested it at my local library so I can keep reading.
(I do not post sampler reviews to goodreads)
Really sad this was just an excerpt because I was drawn in so quickly. After researching I definitely have had this book on my tbr before. So I immediately requested it at the library, after reading Fable I have opened my eyes up more to pirate books. After not being able to finish the matched series, I have been more hesitant about this author.
Thank you for the except, because it really drew me in now I am off to read the rest of the book.
I loved Ally Condie’s Matched series and am intrigued to learn more about Poe Blythe. Condie has a talent that extends beyond one frame of genre, and this excerpt shows an unfolding science fiction narrative for young adults. Very well done, and I want to read more from this author.
“Some people always burn.”
There are no words to describe how much I loved this book. The way it speaks about loss, revenge and rebirth. Obviously it broke me apart completely, I have barely had the time to say: oh I like this Call.. that he died. But the way Poe reacted, I can see why she behaved like she did. Alone in the world the only thing she could do was to hold on to the only feeling that made her feel alive: revenge. But of course there’s always one point in life that makes you understand that even that can’t give you back what you lost.. and that’s when your new life can begin.
