I enjoyed this thriller. Fairly fast paced. Lots of interesting characters and some twists and turns. I was convinced I had guessed the ending, but I hadn’t at all! Definitely recommend this to others. I’ve read all of C. L. Taylor’s books and will look forward to the next one.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the eARC of this book.
Brilliant suspense novel loads of twists in it. It’s an interesting storyline.
Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.
Her Last Holiday covers a lot of ground, and much depends on us not knowing everything about the characters until a key moment.
The basic story focuses on Fran, whose sister went missing after a retreat. The person Fran thinks was responsible has recently come out of prison and his partner has set up a new retreat. Determined to find out what happened to her sister, Fran books onto the retreat under an assumed name.
The majority of the story focuses on strange events happening during the retreat. There’s no doubt someone is hiding something, but we don’t get to learn who or what until fairly late on. In amidst the rather mundane investigation we have different accounts of the events surrounding the disappearance of Jenna.
There’s plenty of attempts to misdirect us, and though we eventually are told what happened it felt rather uneventful after attempts to make everything sound so dramatic.
Thanks to NetGalley for granting me access to this in advance of publication
I found this book good but not as good as her previous books. The plot and idea behind the book are fab but in the end it just wasn’t for me.
It was played out very well but it took a long time to get to the truth,
Everything for excellently developed and it was a nice ending but definitely not what I was expecting
Thanks to netgalley for giving me this arc!
The characters in this book are so well written and described! I really enjoyed the three POVs and the suspenseful writing style.
A crime mystery book told by the three main characters set in Malta in a spa retreat. I was unable to connect with the characters in this book and it failed to hold my attention. In places there was great action and then would fall flat. I have enjoyed many of the authors books but this one just wasn't for me
I have loved all of CL Taylor's previous books but sadly I just could not get in to this one. Sorry, this one's not for me
I did not finish this. Very much a personal taste thing.
This was reminiscent of Liane Moriarty and Lucy Foley. While there is a mystery element, the focus is very much on the characters backgrounds and personalities. Unfortunately I didn't connect with any of the characters perspectives. While I don't mind unlikable characters, they do need to be interesting or intriguing and I personally didn't get that from this book.
Definitely not a bad book at all, and I definitely think the right reader will really enjoy it. The mystery for me just didn't keep me on edge enough to keep reading.
This is an entertaining summer read if you don't mind suspending your disbelief! The book focuses on the dark side of the wellness industry through a missing person case and the comeback of a popular wellness expert after a public downfall. The POVs are from the missing person through flashbacks, her sister in the present time, and the wife of the wellness expert also in the present. The writing is engaging and the story is revealed bit by bit so it makes you want to keep turning the pages. I liked how the characters are sketched; I can see them as real people just trying to figure out how to handle their upended lives.
However, I didn't find the mystery particularly compelling. I thought certain characters are portrayed unconvincingly - e.g. a man who sexually assaults a woman is later shown to be her knight in shining armor. The twists felt outlandish and hard to swallow. What I liked is the commentary on the wellness industry and how some so-called experts prey on vulnerable people. The combination of slick marketing and curated social media has a ripple effect that leaves a strong impression, even obsession, that unfortunately can lead to fatalities. There's a certain cynicism in how these people operate that feels close to real life and the book gets that right.
Jenna vanished from a retreat in Gozo two years ago hosted by Tom Wade, the face of “SoulShrink”. Suspected suicide was the determination from authorities when her flip flops were found near the edge of a cliff and blood stains were found on the rocks.
Her body was never found and her sister Fran is determined Jenna would not have jumped. Fran wants answers in relation to her sister’s death.
Tom Wade has just been released from jail after being charged with manslaughter for the two deaths that occurred on that same retreat as Jenna. His wife Kate is waiting in anticipation because she wants him back in the hot seat and hosting another retreat, determined to get SoulShrink thriving again.
Fran attends the retreat in disguise under a pseudonym in hope of finding out the truth about Jenna and it turns out three of the people attending were also on the retreat in Gozo. Can Fran find out the truth about Jenna? Did Jenna jump to her own death or was it a case of foul play?
This book was a quick, easy read that had me fully immersed in the first half of the book. The second half teetered off a bit and there seemed to be a bit repetitive and draggy and I found myself skimming through some sections of it. The ending wasn’t quite the bang I was expecting but overall an easy, enjoyable read.
Having read and enjoyed all of C L Taylor's previous books I was looking forward to picking her new one up. A great thriller full of mystery and suspense with a great twist at the end that I didn't see coming. Would definitely recommend this book. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Read and reviewed in exchange for a free copy from NetGalley. I was excited to read this given it was set in beautiful Malta, but was unfortunately left disappointed. There were errors about the country, and I didn't find myself gripped by the storyline, although the ending was unexpected.
I have previously enjoyed several of C.L. Taylor's books, so I was really looking forward to this.
I'm not one to normally be put off or confused by duel timelines but unfortunately, I found this one extremely difficult to remember who was who,
This book was somewhat of a disappointment I'm afraid and I gave up half way through
HER LAST HOLIDAY is about a murder that took place in a private retreat, with a handful of people, each of who have tiny pieces of information necessary to look at the big picture. Another fast-paced thriller that flows effortlessly, and asks you for one thing only- observe and deduce.
So suspensful, just what I was hoping this book would be like and it had me guessing all the way to the end - definitely an enjoyable read for thos who like good mystery.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and I hope it won’t be the last! It's such a good read, with suspense and creeping dread throughout as you find out more about the characters and what happened before Jenna went missing, I thought I saw some of the twists or reveals coming, but there was enough that I didn’t guess to keep me reading.
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon for the electronic copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
#HerLastHoliday #NetGalley I love CL Taylor books and this latest one did not disappoint. Told from the perspective of three main characters Fran, Jenna and Kate and a mixture of present and three years ago, this book kept me on the edge of my seat chapter after chapter. Plenty of action and lots of twists and turns that had me shifting my opinion of who was good and who was bad many times. The three characters were all strong characters who were well developed but not always likeable. A big twist at the end that I honestly didn't see coming! A well deserved 5 stars - can't wait for the next book by Cally.
This book follows 3 women: Jenna, who mysteriously disappeared following a wellness retreat at which 2 people died; Fran, her sister who is searching for her and Kate, who co ran the retreat with her therapist husband Tom.
I enjoyed the very different characters of the 3 women, with all their problems. I did see a lot of the twists coming (maybe I've read too many psychological thrillers!) but I enjoyed the story and it kept me entertained to the end.
I did enjoy this book, there were lots of twists. However it was at times a bit confusing, dragged a bit and seemed quite prolonged. But still, it was a mostly exciting read.
Omg ! Her best book yet !
I loved all her other books but this one has just got the edge, it kept me on the edge of my seat right till the end.
Brilliant !
