The third novel in the series and the first that I’ve read. The Book has an intriguing premise, but it left me wanting in some areas. I felt that the characters were to weak and they kept walking into situations that don’t seem realistic. I loved the work with the deaf community within the text, and this added a lot of depth to the novel. I’d like to see a bit more character depth, but a good read.
This is the third in the Paige Northwood series; she’s a British Sign Language interpreter working in this book with profoundly deaf social worker Sasha Thomas. Paige gets a phone call from Lukas Nowalk, a deaf client of Sasha’s to say that his house is on fire and his wife is trapped inside. The storyline reveals a plot with a web of lies and intrigue at the centre.
Having enjoyed the previous two books I looked forward to this one but I don’t think it has the same impact. The concept of Paige as an amateur sleuth is wearing a bit thin and though DI Forest is very unlikeable I believe she is right in her opinions on this one!! Paige claims she is reluctant to get involved but does so anyway and the consequences don’t seem to stop her either! Sasha is not very likeable, she’s pushy in this novel which becomes very annoying. Although the plot line is interesting as the novel expands the style it’s written in means it all falls a bit flat. There isn’t much suspense and tension as a consequence and the backtracking in time interrupts the flow. As Paige tells the story there is unnecessary detail which gets in the way although I do like the fact that she’s torn between her relationship with Max and her attraction to DS Rav Singh who is one of the most likeable characters in the series. As the end of the book approaches there are few surprises as I feel the ending is rather weak.
However, I do believe the concept behind the books with deaf characters at the centre of the storyline makes important points. There is pertinent commentary in the narrative about some people’s negative perceptions towards the deaf which in this day and age you would hope are in the past but sadly aren’t. I like the expansion of the plot into gangs, county lines and cuckooing which is very relevant.
Overall, my overriding view of the novel is that of disappointment, I didn’t connect with this one as with the previous ones but I hope other readers do. If the series is to continue then I think it needs to go up several notches in pace.
With thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books for the arc for an honest review.
Fantastic storyline. Kept me up til the early hours as I needed to find out more.
Definitely recommend to thriller fans.
In no way did I hate this book, but I found it to be a very middle ground mystery novel and not one the held my attention for very long. It was like I was happy to know the ending and I found the characters very well done, but once I was done with the story it seemed to leave my mind.
Saying all that though it is a good book and I think if you are a reader who likes mysteries and book series that follows an unlikely person thrown into a situation to have to be a detective/help them then I would give this book and any other by the author a shot for sure!
Also, I really liked the focus on the importance of ALS and people being able to communicate with others, and really does inspire a person to want to learn sign language to help better the flow of knowledge to all people.
Nell Pattison does it again! I am blown away by the ability this author has to bring my in time and time again. I am obsessed with her characterisation, her storytelling and her ability to keep the reader gripped.
I need more!!
I've enjoyed the last two Paige Northwood books, but this one fell a bit flat for me.
There were a few times I found her a little bit unlikeable .
I'm hoping it was wrong book at wrong time and can continue to enjoy the series.
My least favorite book in this series. I just couldn't stand Paige in this one. For the most part she was a doormat and a stupid one at that. She was told on many many occasions not to get involved in this investigation, to not do anything stupid. And what did she do? You guessed it: she got involved anyway. She got physically hurt because of it three times in this book. On top of that, her personality in here was volatile at times. Her sister Anna started dating this guy and, instead of being happy for her, Paige was jealous, because, you see, her sister was happy but Paige's love life was a disaster. Speaking of that, maybe her boyfriend Max ultimately wasn't for her, but she was with him for over a year while having feelings for someone else. Not a nice thing to do. And then, to top it off, she managed to get the person she has feelings for in a lot of trouble.
I don't even know. The previous book was really good and was looking forward to this one. I hoped there would be a lot of character development, but it ended up being a hot mess. And speaking of the next book, I don't know how it's supposed to go. Paige is not a detective, she is just an interpreter, she can't solve these crimes anyway but especially now when in puts others in crossfires. As a reader of mysteries you're supposed to enjoy the investigating process but all I wanted here was for Paige to stop being so goddamn arrogant and just mind her own business. So how is it entertaining when you want the so-called investigator to stop investigating? The next book better redeem this series.
Thank you to Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the third in the series and I have to say every book has had me hooked, desperate for more!!
We meet Paige again, she is now working as a sign language interpreter for Social Worker Sasha and freelances for the local police. She is dating Max who wants to take their relationship to the next level.
Paige is drawn into a murder case involving one of Sasha’s clients. Lucas arrives home to find his house on fire and his wife Nadia murdered. Lucas is arrested for the murder but his silence is making him look guiltier.
Paige and Sasha are adamant that Lucas is innocent and start to investigate into Lucas’s life to see what he is hiding..
I love Paige, the way she throws herself into being an amateur detective, even putting her own life at risk. I do find myself screaming at her NO, as she does not always think before jumping into danger!!
A series that I am hoping will continue.

I was so excited when I heard that there was a new Paige Northwood book coming out, I just love this series!
As always, we are launched straight into the action when Paige gets a call from Lukas to say that his house is on fire. She rushes to the scene, and from then on she is entangled in a web of lies, suspicion and danger.
Paige always ends up getting in too deep, she just can’t help getting involved, and even though at times I wished I could get into the book and drag her back from potential danger, she keeps ploughing on, getting into dodgy situations.
Her personal life is an important part of the book too, and she has some big decisions to make.
This fast-paced, dramatic and compelling book had me turning the pages so fast, I just could not put it down. Another fabulous addition to the series. My only complaint is that the ending left me wanting more, I hope she can write the next one quickly, as I really need to know what happens next for Paige!
This is the 2nd book I’ve read in this series and I enjoyed them both immensely you are gripped from the first page. I have to say it was very disturbing to think you have a fire and murder in your house and your deaf it’s just unimaginable. . The husband Lukas obviously knows more than he’s saying as he does say to Paige he knows who’s done it then doesn’t say anymore.
I love to read about Paige’s love life will they won’t they is quite intriguing and can’t wait to see what happens next. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an early copy of this book.
The Silent Suspect by @writernell is a 4.5 start read 🤓 this is the 3rd in the Paige Northwood series & i really enjoyed it very much. The story was chilling and very twisty, I enjoyed getting to know Paige Northwood better and I really like her as a character like the previous two books I was hooked straight away I couldn't put it down, I thought I knew who did it but again I was wrong, i love that Paige wants to be part of the action even though she knows she shouldn't. I do hope though that Paige and Rav Singh get together in the next book as I think it's time and I'd love to know more about DI Forest I want to know more about her..
I was actually quite excited to read book 3 so soon after reading book 2....
I am so glad I didn't read this first...else I never would have read another one!
A few things:
1) Everything I hated about Paige was even more pronounced in this book...she is basically Jessica Fletcher...why on earth is she even involved? She is obnoxious and so so very reckless with her own life and with everyone else's around her as a result.
2) Poor Max. Paige treated him awfully and if it had been the other way round and Paige was the man...abusive, gaslighting and lovebombing would have been used in her dealing with Max.
3) Poor Rav...she treats him as bad as she treats everyone else. Run Rav...run!
4) Sasha was a fairly interesting character in the last book and it actually highlighted how deaf social workers operate and the challenges they face...Paige being her interpreter was really interesting and was looking forward to that aspect...but it turns out Sasha is a really abusive employer...who knew! She was awful from start to finish! Who treats people like that?!
I just cannot get my head around why Paige is even involved...let alone why she constantly puts herself in danger and why she thinks she is so much better than everyone else. Some of these traits were in the last book but they were so much apparent in book 3!
I was also really disappointed after the positive and hopeful ending of 2....we were at exactly the same point or in fact further back 3 months later when this book picked up
..I was surprised and disappointed that the character development at the end of 2 and what she learnt in book 2...was in fact rescinded and a majority of the time Paige behaves like a petulant child...stamping until she gets her own way...
Its so frustrating as this book has so many hallmarks of being great and Paige could be a great character if she wasn't so petulant and cavalier with her own life and literally everyones around her. Why does she even care about Lukasz? At the sake of her own life and everyone else's? More than seeing Anna in pain or Rav or even Sasha?
The mystery this time was also very paint by numbers....I figured out alot of it very early on...and I'm not great at this stuff...
Overall I do enjoy the ideas behind the book.. and I like familiar characters...and the world building in these books....but the execution of this one was more frustrating than anything....it could be great but Paige is really not very sympathetic in this one and comes across as conceited and that she knows best...
Will I read the next one? Definitely...but I hope it has more of the flashes of brilliance I saw in the previous one and I hope Paige becomes a more rounded character instead of one who just does the same thing over and over again.
Thanks to the author, publisher and Netgalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is a good but pretty average book. The characters were interesting but I just couldn’t relate to them. I wasn’t aware that this was from a series either though. It was good but not good enough for me to delve into the rest of the series.
Thanks to Netgalley and Publisher for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The synopsis made me request it on Netgalley. I didn't know that it was the part of a series until I started to face a few flashbacks. Though the main story is different there are different references from other books.
Paige is an interpreter who works for a social worker, Sasha. Lukas is Sasha's client who contacted Paige one day when his house is on fire and Nadia, his wife, is stuck inside. Police suspect Lukas as the killer, Paige is his interpreter so she has to be there.
I like that author focused on sign language and psychology, she also incorporated problems these people face in daily life. I couldn't feel to any of the character, the duo of Sasha and Paige was so irritating. Sasha was so unlikeable, I didn't feel a thing for Lukas so naturally, It was hard to connect with the story. The writing style was also not my cup of tea, there were way too many details for my test. The ending was so boring and there'll be another book so It was kind of a loose end.
An enjoyable read that sees a British Sign Language interpreter venture to a murder investigation, “The Silent Suspect”, by Nell Pattison (Avon), provides very interesting insights into Deaf culture and the work of a BSL interpreter.
I liked the characters and the interactions between them: the heroine, Paige, is a nice person trying to do the right thing and helping her friends. I really liked the parts about her work as an interpreter, navigating two languages and worlds and the need to immerse herself in both, the outlook on Deaf culture and some bias against Deaf people.
Paige’s hesitation and “confused feelings” between two love interests and the anxiety it causes is realistic and makes her human and relatable. Singh seems smitten with her but this plot line was left unsolved and the heat factor is very low.
As for the suspense plotline, it didn’t seem to flow very smoothly and the first person narration felt a bit boring sometimes, with too much details.
Paige and Sasha work as sign language interpreters to deaf and mute people while helping in their rehabilitation. They currently are working with Lukas, to help him overcome his addiction. This starts with Lukas calling Paige to ask her to call emergency services when his house was on fire and wife Nadia stuck inside. Later, Lukas was arrested on suspicion. Lukas stops communicating with Paige, Sasha, and the police.
Much to the annoyance of police Forest and Singh, who are working on this case, Paige can’t help but get in the way of their investigation.
From the first page itself, I’ve struggled to connect with Paige. She seemed too good to be true. Another aspect I hated was her emotional cheating. She thinks her current boyfriend Max has good qualities compared to her abusive ex and thinks Max pales in comparison with Singh. While she was in a relationship with Max, she continues to have feelings for Singh. I hated this aspect.
Coming to the murder mystery, I easily guessed why Lukas stopped communicating as it was plain to see for anyone who has eyes but couldn’t guess the killer and the reveal was surprising. Other than this surprising factor, I’ve found this to be very slow to my liking.
Overall, it was an ok book that moves at snail’s pace and is boring sometimes with shallow characters.
Thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for sharing this ARC COPY with me in exchange for my honest review!
Paige Northwood, British Sign Language interpreter is called by deaf client after his house is set on fire. When Paige arrives, Lukas is distraught and looking for his wife, Nadia. Later, firefighters find the dead body of Nadia, but it seems she was murdered before the fire was set. Paige and Social Worker, Sasha that Paige is interpreting for begin their own investigation after police do not seem active in tracking down any other suspect now they have Lukas in custody. However there is someone not wanting Paiges interference and she is attacked.
Life is changing fast for Paige as boyfriend Max asked her to move in and her feelings for DS Rav Singh blossom.
I enjoyed this latest instalment and look forward to more of Paiges adventures.
Overall, I enjoyed this novel and will recommend this book as a bookseller. The mystery kept me guessing the whole way through.
When sign language interpreter Paige Northwood gets a call from her client Lukas saying his house is on fire, she rushes to the house to discover that Lukas' wife has died in the fire. What's more shocking is that she was dead before the fire started. Lukas signs that he know who did it but then stays silent afterwards. Is this a sign of his guilt, or his fear? Paige is determined to find out and make sure an innocent man isn't blamed for a crime he didn't commit.
I only recently discovered the Paige Northwood series and have absolutely loved them. I was delighted to get to read this one which is the third in the series. Like the other books, the plot is clever and exciting and all the characters interesting. I loved seeing the usual people back again and hearing how they are doing, and following Paige's personal life is just as exciting as her investigations! The conclusion to the book was shocking and I never would have guessed who was responsible. What I love about these books is that there is always a mystery to be solved, but we always see so many other secrets and shocks during the story. Can't wait for the next one!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the book in return for my honest feedback.
This was an interesting book mostly seen from the viewpoint of Paige, a signing translator. I didn’t realise that it was a third book in this series featuring her but nevertheless it was very good as a stand alone novel. I will be looking out for the others by Neil now.
