Unexpectedly, this turned out to be a good read. As a nurse in New York City, Carlos learns a lot in his job. Losing this job, he finds himself in LA, working with stressed doctors, to ultimately be offered a position in the trauma department. The evolvement of his career and his family dynamic is an interesting counterpoint in this book.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book - the format it was written was very gripping. It was a very poignant read and I loved the romance throughout the book between the two characters. Carlo's struggles are relatable but I am glad he and Amy got their happy ending.
It took a long time for this book to pick up speed. For me, I found it boring to the point I was skipping pages quite a bit. Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for the arc of this book in return for my review. Receiving the book in this manner had no bearing on this review.
In Lucho Castillo's debut novel, unexpected healer which started with the phrase, "I wish I hadn't promised Amy I'd go on job interviews while on vacation." Is a story about a young man, Carlos Taino who goes on a self discovery journey through some challenges.
Carlos Taino was living a simple life in Washington heights, new york until he fell in love with Amy Del Torro. In a desperate attempt to impress her parent, he went to nursing school. Barely graduating, he spent the next five years working at the community organized service at day and his book at night with a dream of become a renowned writer and finally, leave nursing.
One day, Carlos loses his comfortable job and stuck with a pregnant wife, he had no choice but to make choices he didn't like, working in a hospital as a real nurse. He relocated to L.A to become a nurse as he goes through a journey of discovering his love for nursing.
I dare to admit that I was drawn in by this book cover and the title, "Unexpected healer." It sounded grand. However, it took me almost fifty pages to get into the story and if I didn't have to review it. I am pretty sure I would have dropped it.
The plot of the story grew interesting as I read and it managed to capture my interest fully midway. A self discovery novel, he got to become a nurse who's a writer rather than what he saw himself as initially, a writer who hates his job as a nurse.
The characters are quite real and believable. I could almost envision them and their actions. Especially Ramon, Dalia and the extended families. It all felt so real, how they argue about the same thing all the time and their reactions.
If I was asked, I would give a fair chance to recommending this book. It's not the best, it got draggy and boring at some points but, at the same time it's not the worst. It's good enough to be read on a lazy day. However, if you are one that has a love for medical and self discovery novels, read it!!!
I would like to say to the author that there were some part of the story, mostly phrases that was written in other languages without an interpretation. Made me as a reader, miss out on some inside jokes or conversation because I don't understand the language. However, I would like to commend the author on a job well done for doing enough research to write perfectly well on the medical part of the book.
It was a good book and overcoming dissapointments and facing challenges really shaped Carlos Taino into who he needed and was meant to be.
