I enjoyed the Layover by Lacie Waldon a lot. It was a very cute romance. The premise was interesting, and I liked how the story played out. I really liked Ava as a character, but felt like some of her decisions were a little irrational at times. Jack was also a great character. I did feel like the romance between them was a little rushed. This book was cute, but could have been improved a little bit.
The Layover by Lacie Waldon is a perfect fit for readers who crave a lighthearted and emotional romance with a dash of travel and adventure, and are eager to embark on a journey of self-discovery and second chances with a swoon-worthy enemies-to-lovers romance.
Set up to be a cute story of girl meets boy, girl is annoyed by boy, girl realizes boy is great but is already set to marry someone else, your traditional rom-com. While I didn't find the character likeable and stopped at 15%, this will be a solid 3-4 stars for the target audience.
Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin for the ARC.
For a debut, I loved this premise and the author is a flight attendant. This book surprised me in such a great way. I loved AVA and the growth that happened to the characters is outstanding. I would highly recommend this book. 4.5 stars for me.
This was a cute, fun, summery read, perfect for a beach or pool day. While it wasn’t my favorite enemies to lovers story, it still sucked me in and kept me entertained! Thank you, NetGalley, for the ARC!
A book that will be a hit for travel romance lovers, the layover provides banter, exotic locations and swoons for all. The details of being a flight attendant added something special to this story and helped it stand out - people who love immersive details will be drawn to that aspect of the story.
This was a little too long and slow for me. It felt like it was dragging and the way the character’s relationship was portrayed was not the plot that i normally love reading.
This is the perfect summer read. Right from the start I was invested and had to know more. This book is a hate to love trope and it was done so well. I thought the characters were great and I loved the story. I highly recommend checking it out!
A fun, but predictable beachy rom com. I loved the witty behavior of Jack and Ava. The story was cute and fun loving. The only drawback was Ava's relationship status at the beginning of the book, I still loved it though!
I really liked this one, it was easy to read and managed to grab my attention till the end. It's not a favorite but a solid book that I would recommend if the premise sounds like something you'd be interested in.
This was such a fun romcom albeit predictable. I really enjoyed the book and would love to read more by this author. I love a book that is fun, upbeat, easy to ready and The Layover was just that. I will definitely be looking forward to this author’s next book.
What a fun Summer read!
THE LAYOVER is the book you need to take along with you to the beach, the pool, or maybe just sitting outside enjoying the breeze.
It was a fun enemies to lovers RomCom, with plenty of playful banter and all the laughs.
*many thanks to Putnam/Netgalley for the gifted copy for review
Was not able to read the entirety of the book and cannot give an accurate or overall rating/review . As a librarian for a big library system, we most likely have a copy of this item. I will look forward to reading it in future since I am sure I will.
I was so, so excited to read The Layover by Lacie Waldon. I love anything that involves travel (especially right now when traveling isn't very safe), so reading about a flight attendant's adventures was extremely appealing to me. And I really liked parts of it! The writing is very well done, and I loved the descriptions of the views outside a plane and Belize. The discussions about Ava's passion for her career were also very nice to read. I made it about halfway through, though, and looked at how far I had come and realized I still had so much left to read. Essentially, I felt as though I had been reading forEVER. The book was seriously dragging for me. For the most part, Ava is extremely rude and judgmental and I decided I was done with her once I realized how much left I had to read. The things she says to Jack and the way she treats him were horrible. I'm assuming there will eventually be some kind of reveal that will try to justify her behavior and her attitude, but I already know it won't work for me. Ava is an adult, and by this point in her life I'm sure she has learned how to fake being civil to people. I felt really bad for Jack. Plus, at the halfway point there had been no romance and had also only been mildly funny a couple times. So a romantic comedy this is not, just fair warning. The focus is really on the changes in Ava‘s life and her journey to figure out who and what she wants to be. There’s nothing wrong with that, but when I don’t even like her I don’t care to read about her journey. And once the romance begins all I’m going to think is that Jack doesn’t deserve having to put up with someone like Ava. I'm so disappointed.
this felt like one of the classic Hallmark movies come to life in a book and i mean that in a good way! It was warm and fun to read but that didn't necessarily mean it wasn't predictable. I think the added touch of the author being a flight attendant herself made this really fun to read and it did remind me a lot of The Hating Game + The Unhoneymooners. The only thing is that the MC was already in a relationship and it was almost borderline cheating at some points.
This rom com was good but not great. I really liked the travel aspect of the plot, but I did not love the characters. It's a pleasant read but nothing particularly note worthy.
This book was a fun summer beach read. Loved that Lacey is a flight attendant and we can get the nitty gritty of her experience. Although there was no cheating I wished the FMC. would have ended her engagement earlier.
This book was a good summer read with a great romance at the core. I loved the traveling part - personally wasn’t the biggest fan of the characters, but overall I enjoyed this.
I highly recommend this for a fun and quick summer read.
I adored this book and it was just the tropical escape I needed as we settle into the grey, rainy winter here in Seattle.
Ava is a flight attendant, on her last trip. She just got engaged and agreed with her fiancee that she’ll quit her job and stay in one place for a change. Her parents have always been a bit nomadic, wanderers, and as a result all she wants is to put down roots.
Ava is hoping for the perfect farewell trip, but as soon as she enters the employee parking lot at the airport things start to go sideways, all thanks to a hot but irritating man she’s secretly held a grudge against for years. He tries to steal her parking space, then her favorite pre-flight breakfast place, and then it turns out he’s on her multi-leg flight to Belize. Then the crew gets stranded in Belize after some plane issues, and Ava starts to doubt everything she thought she wanted. Has she been fighting against her parent’s lifestyle for the wrong reasons?
I really identified with Ava, on such a deep level. My mom had always been adventurous and different from other parents while I was growing up. As a result, I skewed the other direction and wanted to be responsible and prepared, risk-adverse, and ‘normal’. But the older I get the more I start to think my mom might have been onto something, and I start finding myself leaning more back in that direction.
We also got to chat with Lacie as part of our book club and she was absolutely delightful. She has some pretty hilarious stories from her work as a flight attendant, and she told us all about how she writes from the jump seat on flights.
So, you should definitely check out this book if you haven’t already. A word of warning though, it will give you seriously itchy feet to go on an adventure!
Layover
Quick read. Sweet romance. Haters to lovers.
What I liked:
The short chapters
The growth of Avas character
The banter between Jack and Ava
What didn’t work:
I would have liked more steam
Let me elaborate there was so much build-up and it was a very closed-door romance.
Avas inability to see she was self-sabotaging herself
Avas ability to just end an engagement and jump into a new relationship. Although Alexander seemed like a total dick and not right for her.
Overall I enjoyed this story and I read it in a day. I don’t know why it took me so long to get to this one. I saw LaCie is coming out with a new book next year and I plan on reading that one. I think her writing was great. The story was a fun and easy read.
I think is the perfect travel read. It reminded me of Heartbreak for Hire with less steam and The Unhoneymooners.
