I suppose I don't really get this one. I feel like it would be better titled "Draw 62 Characters and Make them Quirky" because I don't really find them especially cute. It's also odd that they give step by step instructions, but the steps don't really provide any more guidance than the finished drawing. In other drawing books of this style that I've seen, the beginning steps will have sketched guidelines or proportions to give you a better sense of how the drawing is constructed.
Draw 62 Characters was an insanely cute book. It was filled with a great variety of character drawings that each had 3 or 4 different poses or scenarios that the author also drew them in. The steps for each drawing were broken down, but they weren’t clearly showing how the artist could go about creating the drawings themselves. Which might be difficult for very beginner artists.
All of the drawings were wicked cute, as advertised. Though Walter the Whale was my favorite! Some of the drawings had tips included, but not each drawing. There was an introduction and a short “how to use this book” section but other than that, the tips are the only real explanation given, because of this, I think this book would be great for artists who are newer to drawing but not quite beginners!
More cute things to draw
Illustrator and Instagrammer Heegyum Kim takes her readers on a fun journey to expand their character-building skills. She shows this in her book "Draw 62 Characters and Make Them Cute: Step-by-Step Drawing for Figures and Personality; for Artists, Cartoonists, and Doodlers", published by Quarto Publishing Group – Quarry. This is one book our of four of Heegyum's books in the "Draw 62..." series.
Heegyum presents 62 step-by-step instructions of quirky figures and personalities. She gives them names such as "May the Milk Delivery Girl, Nestor der Nerd, Franny the Food Finder, or Cyrus the Cyclops". Heegyum states in her introduction: "Creating characters from your imagination is a fun way to build your drawing skills... Drawing is a wonderful activity, whether you do it for fun or as a profession. And it’s good for you. Studies have actually shown that drawing improves creativity, memory, communication skills, and problem solving skills. In addition to improving physical dexterity and brain/body coordination, drawing also provides stress relief, an outlet for emotions, and increases your emotional intelligence (p. 3)."
This is the third book of the "Draw 62..." series which I read and the second one by Heegyum Kim. Once again I enjoyed it very much. The book shows very cute and fun drawings. It also includes tips which can stimulate the inspiration of the artists and pale sand-colored clouds circles entitled "Try it!" which offer space to readers to try their own drawing skills. I highly recommend the book for artists, cartoonists, and doodlers, but also for children and teenagers as well as for those who use other media (e.g. mix-media) as they can also find inspiration in the book.

I love these books by Heegyum Kim. The characters are always really cute and so easy to draw. I love that the author gets directly into the drawings and doesn’t devote pages and pages to what materials to use. I also adore how they break down the steps so easily so that your drawing does actually resemble theirs: even if you have thumbs that don’t want to draw properly.
That said I wasn’t as enamoured of this as some of their others. Although the characters were quite cute, I did find that they seemed repetitive and a little stereotypical to the point of slight mocking. I much prefer animals to drawing of humans.
This book is a visual reference for drawing a variety of 62 cartoon characters, from different types of people to animals. The step-by-step instructions were really neat. I wish the book went a little further as the content is limited to only those instructions. I think kids will love going through the book and drawing each character. Overall, a pretty cool book for those looking to learn how to draw new characters!
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
This book is adorable! It’s perfect for my artsy niece. I loved how simple it was even for me (non-artistic) to create a not so cute version of the drawings. I’m sure with more practice I would be able to succeed.
Draw 62 Characters and Make Them Cute by Haegyum Kim details step by step drawings for adorable figures and personalities.
The designs in this book seem easy to follow and have cleverly named titles for all the drawings such as Argo the wandering astronaut, Izzy the ice cream maker, and Cyrus the cyclops. I would recommend this book for beginner artists.

I love all of Kim's books and this one was no different. It's filled with funny little characters to draw like Alfred the Alien, Walter the Whale, Baby Jessie, Farmer Jebidiah, Lex the Lumberjack, and dozens more. Most are animals, others are people. They are easy to draw and there are variations shown in the "make them cute" side of the spread, though they're all pretty cute to begin with. This is not my favorite Kim book (her first one, the animal one, is my favorite but also the magical creatures one) but it's still a fun one. As always, highly recommended.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.
As a teacher, I often end up using art within my English lessons, despite any training (or natural talent) that would prepare me to do so. I'm always drawn to books like this one, Draw 62 Characters and Make Them Cute, by Heegyum Kim. I really like several of the characters throughout the book and enjoyed the different personalities contained on each page. However, the books don't have clear steps (especially within the foundational stages), which isn't ideal for beginners. I was also a little disappointed that the characters were on the darker side.
Lots of figures to draw here, and beginners can participate as well as experienced artists, with figures made easier. I love this book, and having reciieved a free copy from netgalley has not influnced my opinions. And yes, the characters are cute, as well.
Fun and fantastic drawing book! I have no drawing talent at all and I tried to take the direction of a couple of the animals and showed them to a friend who can freehand Women’s patterns! She said that I did fairly good for never having any instruction before and that is high praise from her and she is not free with her accolades!
I loved the various animals and the use of colors and the funny pictures as well. I know my granddaughter who is ten will enjoy this book which I intend to purchase for one of her Christmas gifts!
I definitely would recommend this book for a beginner artist or even an advanced artist!
I received an advanced copy from NetGalley and these are my willingly given thoughts and opinions.
A straight-forward "how to draw" book that doesn't insult the reader... I appreciate that. I got an ebook from NetGalley and downloaded it to my phone, then mirrored my screen to my TV, so I could draw with my kids. My 13-year old had fun, my 7-year old had a blast, and my 5-year old followed along just fine trying her best. They loved it, and I liked that every single line wasn't planned; a simple shape is shown and you can draw/copy however you want. Different versions of each image are shown in different postures, moods, colors, to give ideas, which is a great idea.
I got this book and "Draw 62 Things in Nature and Make them Cute", both excellent books for a beginning artist or child.

Draw 62 Characters and Make Them Cute is a step by step guide for learning to draw cartoon style characters. It is aimed at doodlers, beginner artists, and cartoonists. I think it is perfect for children too as the characters will definitely appeal to them. The steps are easy to follow and the drawings can easily be adapted to suit your own style. The book will give you lots of ideas for developing your own cartoon characters based on animals or people.
Thank you to NetGalley ad the publisher for an electronic copy to read and review.
I love Heegyum Kim's books. This is another adorable collection on how to draw cute characters. Like her book on drawing animals, some experience would be best as the first steps are pretty detailed (I'm thinking like an elementary teacher here, so likely kids around 10 could manage). This would be a fabulous resource to have in the classroom or to gift to a child who would like to create their own comics or graphic novels. I know in a couple of year this will be the perfect book for my own daughter.
Draw 62 Characters and Make Them Cute is is a step by step drawing tutorial guide for fantasy creatures by Heegyum Kim. Released 19th Nov 2019 by Quarto on their Quarry imprint, it's 128 pages and is available in paperback format.
This appealing book is full of lots of simple tutorials for drawing humorously and alliteratively named characters: Dan the dashing dinosaur, Sandro the sea scholar, Grandma Greta, Lex the Lumberjack, and 58 more. There are some (relatively minor) spelling errors in some of the tutorials. I received an eARC for review, so the errors are hopefully edited out for the release version.
The tutorials and techniques are suited to beginning artists. There are step by step tutorials for 62 characters including different variations and poses for each one. There is a 'you try it' balloon on each page for reader drawings.
This would make a great gift for would-be artists of all ages. The included tutorials are varied and eclectic with lots from which to choose. I'm not 100% sure how "cute" they actually are. They're certainly not kawaii, but many of them are appealing in my opinion (see cover). There is no introductory technique or materials instruction; the book just includes the 62 tutorials. There is a complete table of contents, so locating individual ones shouldn't be problematic. They're slanted toward line drawings, though colored pens, crayons, and watercolors could certainly be used to enhance the drawings.
Cute book, accessible for everyone.
Four stars.
