Forbidden love. Raw, raw, raw everything. Sci-fi with mystical flavors. Intrigue. We find this couple on the run and in the middle of a battle give birth to our narrator. Little H gets us up to speed on the details of her parents’ history and the history of the the two people who are at war with one another.
There is a lot going on. There are a lot of people after these three and it's clear they are in danger and don't have many options of escape.
Art and story is doing the thing.
First copy was gifted by Netgalley for an honest review. Second read I purchased myself.
Hazel has her father's horns and her mother's wings. Her parents come from two warring worlds, military deserters who chose love over combat. A woman named Vez who sports a unicorn's horn hires a mercenary named The Will to kidnap Hazel and kill her parents. The potential payday for The Will is huge, but he's not the only mercenary looking for the reward. The Will's biggest competition is The Stalk, who looks like a crab on the bottom and a large-breasted woman on top. Also after Hazel's mom is a dude/gadget named Prince Robot IV who has a television set (or maybe a computer monitor) for a head. But it's not until chapter three that the story really starts to get freaky, and chapter four is even freakier (hint: pleasure planet).
The writing is smart and filled with wit, while the story is filled with surprises. The characters are wonderfully unpredictable. This truly is a saga in the sense that the story is just getting warmed up at the conclusion of the volume. I look forward to seeing where it goes next.
The art is gorgeous. Some of sex scenes are graphic -- not quite pornographic, but graphic. I liked it but I wouldn't give this to a little kid to read. Besides, it's too good for little kids.
