Good ending to a good series. I read all three in one great gulp this weekend, and they meshed nicely, didn't overlap annoyingly or require too much knowledge from one book to the next
I loved this book so much! Amazing heroine. The chemistry and banter between the hero and heroine was fantastic. One of my favorite books by Kerrigan Byrne.
The Red Rogues are back and ready to take on the Crimson Council in The Devil in Her Bed, the third book in the Devil You Know series. This historical romance follows Francesca, a woman who survived an unfathomable tragedy in her youth. One of the only survivors of an attack that killed her family, Francesca lives for revenge and won’t rest until she uncovers the leaders of the Crimson Council, who she believes directed the attack on her home.
The Devil of Dorset is a spy who works for the crown. A man with a mysterious past, he goes by many names. As his path crosses with Francesca, neither can resist the attraction they feel. However, with many secrets, the past, and Francesca’s need for revenge standing in their way, does this pair have a shot at love?
I adored this series and felt that The Devil in Her Bed was a fantastic conclusion! Francesca is a fierce, smart, and strong protagonist. She doesn’t need to rely on anyone to reach her goals and loves a fairly independent life, though she is extremely connected to her two best friends, Cecilia and Alexandra. Francesca lives for revenge and is close to uncovering the leaders of the Crimson Council.
The romance between Francesca and the Devil of Dorset is fiery, sexy, swoon-tastic, and one of my favorite parts of the novel. Their connected past is so painful and tragic, and it has affected them in profound ways. They both live with secrets and are fueled by revenge. However, they both show vulnerability when they are together. They have so much chemistry, and it is clear that their feelings run deep.
I also love that characters from the first two books in the series have important roles in this story. The Red Rogues are a family, and they and their partners help Francesca seek her revenge. This found family aspect is another one of my favorite elements of the story, as is the depiction of strong, independent women. Francesca, Alexandra, and Cecilia are great friends and strong allies, and I loved watching their relationships deepen and expand.
The story is unpredictable, with one particularly shocking revelation. The plot highlights the corruptive nature of power and the dark side of society, and the deeper Francesca digs, the darker and more nefarious the Crimson Council’s intentions appear. Deceit, manipulation, murder, and more make for a suspenseful story filled with intrigue and tension. I like that, just when I thought I figured everything out about the characters and the Crimson Council, Byrne managed to shock me with plot twists and character revelations.
Kerrigan Byrne is a master storyteller with a knack for crafting well-layered and captivating stories with intriguing characters. I loved this series and am a bit sad that it’s over! Thanks so much to St. Martin’s Paperbacks and Kerrigan Byrne for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
I'd held a lot of anticipation for Declan and Francesca's book, but to be honest, their emotional arc got lost in the macro level plot drama that just takes up a lot of space. Their dynamic is good, but it doesn't take center stage, instead drowning in a whole bunch of the weirdest plot I've read in a while.
My main problem is that the villain is a super evil depraved mass murderer and then it's revealed that he’s also gay. It’s even vaguely suggested that he might be motivated to do what he did (murder, treason, etc.) because he’s gay. And that's just...not okay at all.
I received a digital advance copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Devil in Her Bed by Kerrigan Byrne is an excellent historical fiction romance that is the 3rd book in the awesome Devil You Know series. I loved How To Love a Duke in Ten Days and All Scott and Bothered, so I knew I just had to read this gem when it came out. I was not disappointed.
This latest book brings everything that I expect, and look forward to, in a book by Ms. Byrne:
1. strong, independent, feisty, fiery, and passionate female characters
2. witty, creative, dramatic, descriptive, and free-flowing prose, dialogue, and character interactions
3. excellent, intricate, and entertaining relationships, character development, and plots
4. and of course...chemistry, electricity, and magnetism abounds between the main female and male characters.
I love Pippa/Francesca. She is passionate, independent, intelligent, a force to be reckoned with, determined, cunning (because she has to be), a fighter, and I love her!
I love how this is not just a “romance series”. This series has so much more. There is a darker, more serious undertone, and the author doesn’t shy away from some of the heavier subject matter from this time, and she balances this perfectly with the wit, passion, emotion, and humor throughout. What the reader is left with is truly an inspiration for every romance novelist to look towards for inspiration.
I loved this book just as much as its predecessors and I cannot wait to see what Ms. Byrne cooks up next.
5/5 stars enthusiastically
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this excellent ARC and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.
I am posting this review to my GR, Instagram, and Bookbub accounts immediately and will post it to my Amazon, Instagram, and B&N accounts upon publication on 3/9/21.
4.5*
What a fantastic and unique story! The book starts off with Francesca and Declan as kids in a heart pounding scene where they lose everything dear to them. Years later, Francesca has become a sort of superhero, and Declan a spy. They each must infiltrate the worst secret society in London to tear it down and avenge the horrors of their childhood.
I appreciate how different this book is from many others in its genre. Francesca is a modern day woman; she can kick some ass, is strong, opinionated, and independent. Her personality holds true throughout the whole story.
Kerrigan Byrne gives us quite an adventure, from heartache, great suspense, deception, obsession, jealousy, etc. My only issue was the role Francesca played as an imposter; it went on for too long. The deception because of it was frustrating and it was hard for me to believe that the love she shared was true. It bordered on narcissistic to where she didn't care that her love interest was enamored with someone else - the person she portrayed. How is that genuine? It does work itself out in the end and it's done quite well.
My thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read and review The Devil in Her Bed by Kerrigan Byrne.
I have been excited for Francesca and her story since I read How To Love A Duke in Ten Days. This book answered everything and more. I adored this book. Kerrigan Byrne answers all the questions and makes me wish I could be a Red Rogue. The hero is divine. The story is just wonderful. I laughed, I cried. I didn’t want it to end. I recommend this book to everyone who enjoys romance or just well written stories. Just read this book and this series and all of her books, they don’t disappoint.
This last part of the Devil You know trillogy brings it to a rip -roaring end. It is now Francesca's turn to confront her past and complete the revenge she's waited 20 years for. She has grown into a formidable instrument of that revenge, powerful both physically and in her alliances. She will need all her personal strength as well as the help of her friends to bring her enemies to their knees. One of those on her side, Chandler, is an government operative that she has met in previous books, albeit in disguise. The two of them find their soul mates in each other but secrets, both hers and his, will threaten their relationship. I don't want to say too much and give anything away, so I will just say that the end is well worth the wait. I couldn't put it down. For those who haven't read the first two parts of the trilogy, you can still enjoy this one. But you will undoubtedly want to read the others afterwards. I do recommend reading them in order.
This is going to be a hard to review without spoilers because what didn't sit well with me is the plot itself. This is my personal bias not the author's fault. The best I can explain without ruining the story is to share a story from Smallville fandom years ago, the show about Superman as a young man. There was this character Chloe Sullivan (actress in the news because of the branding cult). Her fans wanted to be revealed as Lois Lane. The only problem was Lois Lane was on the show and was Chloe's cousin. For years Chloe fans came up with farfetched ways for Lois to die and Chloe would take Lois's identity (name and all) and end up with Clark Kent. They wanted her with Clark and so she had to be Lois Lane. The story had to end that way because of DC Comics rules. Needless to say it didn't happen.
I got unpleasant flashes to all that reading this. The end of the story in particular really disturbed me. I didn't feel the hero loved her as much as she loved him even with the grovel scene. I felt there would always be a ghost between them. When it was never going to end the way the hero imagined because the girl on the pedestal didn't feel the same and the reader was privy to this but he wasn't. This didn't work for me but probably will for others!
Kerrigan Byrne does not write insipid heroines, but of tortured brave soldiers of life. Nor does she write polite exploratory love scenes. Instead sex is ‘punishing’ or a conflagration of ownership and emotion. This book, the conclusion to her Mistresses of Mayhem series, takes a child who survives a massacre of everyone she knows, including children, and puts her heroine on a 20 year journey to wreak revenge on those killers and the man who ordered that massacre. Unbeknownst to her, her childhood secret love also survived and is on a similar redemptive path but knows that the architect of the massacre is his own father. They join together, hostile allies in pursuit unaware of each other’s secret identity. Misunderstood motives drive them before they achieve their HEA. A worthy conclusion to the series.
I enjoyed the book. Though there were grammatical error in couple of places the flow was good. The story had strong characters.
The concluding novel to the series where knowledge of the Crimson Council first started and impacted two lives greatly, both living with guilt and seeking revenge for the loved ones they lost. Both are keeping secrets from each other, where one move throughout society and the other through the shadows. They call this dangerous man the Devil of Dorset, for he does not exist, but for one woman he does. Francesca Cavendish, the Countess of Mont Claire, has trained to not be defenseless or helpless, but to be strong and cunning in order to avenge her loved ones. As their two paths begin to intertwine, they realize both want the same thing, but working together is not either of their strong suites. Still, they begin to learn more about each and reveal secrets about themselves, which changes their relationship. However, secrets never stay buried and the ones they each carry could change everything in their lives.
I received this novel from net galley and the publisher as an ARC. Thank you! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I was waiting anxiously for this book and it did not disappoint. The Devil in Her Bed is everything you want in a Historical Romance and more, I loved it. It's romantic, action packed, characters deceive and are deceived, truth is revealed.... It's great and exactly what you'd expect from a Kerrigan Byrne novel.
I just wish there'd been an epilogue, but I'll have to deal.
5 stars.
A very good ending for this that was one of my favorite trilogy of regency romance. I love the way Francesca and Declan get to know each other, or something like that ;)
Un ottimo finale per questa che era una delle mie trilogie regency preferite. Mi é piaciuta soprattutto la modalitá con cui Francesca e Declan si "riconoscono".
THANKS NETGALLEY FOR THE PREVIEW!
*Thank you to NetGalley for an eARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.*
I don't know that I have read a more perfectly put together Historical Romance Trilogy than this one. I don't know how I can separate this one out from the entire Devil You Know Trilogy because it all built on top of each other so well.
I was fortunate enough to receive an eARC for this book not long after reading the 1st and 2nd novel in the series and I think it flowed together so well. With Byrne's trademark darkness, sexiness, and great characters, I was swept away to the world of the Red Rogues and The evil Crimson Council which is really dived into in this novel.
I was so ready to learn more about Pippa/Francesca and I knew from the previous novels dropping hints that her story would gut me. This was so true the Story of Francesca and her revenge is so poignant and she is such a kick ass heroine… I was just entranced. So much so that I started this book the night before Thanksgiving and finished Thanksgiving day as soon as I put my turkey in to roast.
I also knew something was up with certain people we meant along the way. Which I won't spoil here since we are a long ways off from the release but… WOW! Was my diligence paid off.
Francesca is a power house! She was fierce and takes no prisoners. She was tough and strong and could hold her own against Lords, Assassins, and her friend's husbands. She would not be gainsaid in getting vengeance for her loved ones. But she was also clever and alluring.
Our hero… well, I don’t want to say too much about him. I was able to quickly guess who he was.. But it did NOT lessen my enjoyment. I don't think the author is really trying to make his identity a mystery, its more of a mystery about where he has been in the past and why he is watching Francesca. He knows she is an imposter… maybe… and he is obsessed with getting her to admit, while in his bed of course.
As always, this is sexy as hell and full of longing. It may be close to one of her darker novels and the Crimson Counsel is no villain to laugh at. I was scared about what damage they could cause.
All in all, if you have read the other 2, I know you will be continuing. As you should. If you haven't read a Kerrigan Byrne… Please don't start here. Go back and read How to Love a Duke in Ten Days because it will make this book 1000% more satisfying.
But this a 5/5, NO QUESTION!
I can't wait to see what she writes next.
