I love psychology and the science of emotions. I knew that this would be a science heavy book and it delivered on that for sure. I learned a lot and was able to absorb a lot of what I read. I have tried to apply my knowledge to my life. If you want to read this and get all that you can from it, you need to be aware that it is heavy and you need the right setting for that. It is probably not a great beach read but I think most would know that.
This book is from my own publisher. It's a really insightful look into how the brain works and a thoroughly fascinating read.
Another in the series of books that aim to grab your attention with the word f*ck. Yes, it does address some good self-help advice, but it's not something that offers anything more than what is already tried and true.
This is an interesting book with an offputting title. It's written by a neuroscientist, who I am presuming wouldn't use the title in her academic work but thinks it will work to sell books. In my opinion it cheapers the publisher and the author. No serious academic author would want to be so discredited by using a junky title to sell a book.
The content is interesting and non-sweary. I've read many books on behaviour and behavioural change, and this one had a few new ideas for me, so if you are struggling to change bad habits, or make improvements in your work life, home life or relationships, this book could be a helpful read for you.
If you can see past the title and realise that this is a serious book written by an academic neuroscientist, you may find it of use. If however you are expecting the level of language to be the same as the title, you may find it hard going.
This was an insightful book that helped me understand human behaviour in regards to biology of the brain. I'd say if you need a boost in your life, this book will help you get there.
Very. Science. Heavy. You have to be in the mood to really work through the medical jargon and repetition. I wanted to get more out of it, but it's not the place for me. DNF at 70%.
I have read and recommended this title just as I have the others with the "profanity laden" titles. Titles aside, I loved the plain speaking and very applicable tips and techniques for getting one's life together. While change may be the only constant, it is very difficult and I learned quite a bit about how to circumvent my old blocks. Loved it!
this was too heavy for me. Sometimes even reading back it didn't sink in.
Too much for me and I lost my way with it sorry
Wow, this is science heavy. Not in a bad way but it took some googling to figure out what was going on, had to read some sentences a few times. This book is not necessarily for everyone and it was a really slow read but interesting.
This is not just a leisurely book to read, but a book to really delve into. With so much insight on our thinking written by a neuroscientist. The book broaches neuroscience in clear, concise, and easy to understand way. It gives you questions to ask yourself on your journey to change. I love that each chapter clearly states the objective of that chapter, and the end summarizes the chapter. This isn't just a book about changing thoughts or habits, but out personality, productivity, and even relationships. A great book.
I am so happy that I read this book. It is written by a neuroscientist who clearly explains how to change things about ourselves that are doing us self harm. It is well-written and easy to understand. I am recommending this book to so many people because it is life-changing.
I loved this book. It's written in a very colloquial, informal style, which makes it really engaging & easy to follow. Although it covers quite scientific subject matter, the author really translates everything into layman's terms so it's relatable. There are lots of practical steps to take & I found myself making notes & will definitely be coming back to this book a lot to put into practice her advice. I'd really recommend this book.
This choice was entirely based on the title and the fact that the author is a Dr. The title is exactly something that has been bothering me since the beginning of the quarantine and, even though I don't believe in self-help books much, I gave it a try, I've been trying to apply it some ideas in my routine, so I think I recommend this book!
How many of us want to implement new habits into our lives, but often find them short lived? Whether it is diet related or how we deal with stress change is hard, but Why the F*ck Can’t I Change is here to tell you that it is not as impossible as you may think.
Dr. Gabija Toleikyte is a neuroscientist and behavioural coach, who explains why we form certain habits and behaviours, shows us how we can stop ourselves from repeating mistakes and takes us on an eye-opening journey through the way the human brain works.
Covering topics such as why you should not suddenly stop bad habits, ways to improve your productivity and how to look after your brain health. Why the F*ck Can’t I Change is transformative, inspiring and empowering.
Unlike other self help books I found Why The F*ck Can’t I Change took a more pragmatic approach to guiding us. Dr Gabija uses a mixture of academic research and case studies to bring her points to life, and she suggests activities throughout so you can put her advice into practice.
I enjoyed the scientist approach this book took as it was useful to know the ‘why’ behind things. Rather than just being told how to change, it was helpful to know why we are a particular way, which the author tells us by going right down to basics for example our animal instincts.
Some may say that this is more of a textbook, as the author introduces the purpose of each chapter and writes summaries at the end of each chapter. Whilst, for some this may trigger bad school memories, or perhaps be overly repetitive, I found it really helpful. The chapters were well-structured, the summaries reminded of what I had learnt and being a book and are great to refer back too once you have finished.
Will you enjoy this book if you are not overly interested in science? Personally, I never particularly enjoyed science at school, but found this book fascinating. I found the authors explanations easy to understand and no matter how scientific you are or you are not, I believe this is the one neuroscience book we can all get behind. We all have a brain (some may say debatable) so do we not owe it to ourselves to understand how it works?
Overall, a refreshing, well researched and practical self-help book, which not only teaches how but why. Five stars.
Thank you to Thread and NetGalley for the ARC, in exchange for an honest review.
Why the F*ck Can't I Change? gave many good insights and life lessons to apply in life, would recommend everyone to give it a quick read.
We all have aspects of our life where we feel a change is needed. And, just as often, we work on implementing that change only to realize a couple months later that everything is back to how it was before. Why is that? Dr. Toleikyte provides us with the scientific reasons that change can be so difficult, as well as real-life stories to back up the scientific explanation.
I found this to be an informative read. The scientific aspects were, at times, dull, but provided a good support for the stories that were told.
The chapters are laid out in a way that one can pick the area they wish to read about, without having to read through the whole book. It's definitely a good book to keep on hand to serve as a refresher when we meet challenges in our life.
As much as i wanted to read this book in the hope of changing my bad habits I just couldn't enjoy the book with all the repetitive medical jargon - did not finish
Whilst an enjoyable and educational book which leaves plenty of food for thought, Why the F*ck Can't I Change wasn't quite what I expected.
From the title, I was expecting this to be a slightly more approachable and humorous look at the human brain, however the content is pretty dense and at times, dull. The information provided is well researched and explained in understandable terms however I did find it pretty dry at times.
Overall, worth a read, just don't expect humour.
Thanks to Thread Books and NetGalley for the ARC.
I read this at the start of the year and it was the perfect moment to get some practical tips on how to make change happen.
The titles and the cover for this book really jumped out at me and I thought for once ,maybe there would be a self help book I could relate to.
Sadly after a skim read I still wasnt drawn in by it and the few sections I read in depth didnt really hit home for me.
Not for me but might be helpful to overs.
