Excellent romance for adult readers. I liked the concept of the rich socialite actress having to earn her keep and learn about how the real world operates. I read up on this novel after I finished it and the main character Piper Bellinger is somewhat based on Alexa Rose from Schitt’s Creek. I am a huge fan of Alexa Rose and Schitt’s Creek, so I love the concept and thought this novel lived up to my desire for more for Alexa! If you want a rom com beach read that you can’t put down that has sweet romance, comedy, with heartwarming and poignant moments- this is for you. I am giving it 5/5. The sequel is good as well 4/5 stars. I bought it after I read this one.
The first in a brand new series, IT HAPPENED ONE SUMMER might just be my new favorite Summer romance.
Tessa Bailey has become one of my favorite romance authors, and I literally swooned for this latest release by her. Told through the story of Brendan, a grumpy hero, and Piper, I loved their banter and the funny way they acted around one another.
The characters were great, and I thought this was the perfect light read to bring along to the beach or pool this Summer.
*many thanks to Avon and Netgalley for the gifted copy for review
takes me back to how i felt when i read Fix Her Up — this is the Tessa Bailey I LOVE. Perfect summer romance in a fun & unexpected setting. I'm all for her turning TV characters into her own—Jess from New Girl next ???
Why did it take me so long to read this book?! It was perfect, perfect, perfect.
Bailey has a way with words. This was my first book of hers to read, but I'm already sold on the rest of them. This book was written in 3rd person pov, but switched between Brendan and Piper. I loved that each time it switched, I could automatically tell which character it was because the voice was distinct. Piper and Brendan had different sounding thoughts (as they should have had) and I was just so happy to experience it.
Also, this book was so funny! I laughed out loud during multiple moments. Piper was just spoiled enough to make hilarious comments or have thoughts about things "normal/working class" people do. It was so fun to watch her try to acclimate herself to living without unlimited money and means. And she did so gracefully. Mostly.
Moving on to our leading man, Brendon! Okay, I looooove Brendon. He didn't play games, fell in love first, and communicates! In fact, he encouraged Piper to communicate her feelings on multiple occasions. I know the bar is low on that one, but I love a man that can communicate his thoughts and feelings. On top of these character traits, who can resist a bearded fisherman?
Overall, this book was IT for me. I've immediately picked up a copy of Hannah's story, the other Bellinger sister, and can't wait to dive back into the word of Westport.
i really enjoyed it happened one summer but i do think it is a bit overhyped because contemporary romance with no darkness or extreme emotional turmoil is going to blow me out of the water. despite that i think the writing was amazing and i really like how tessa bailey writes steam.
starting with the characters, i did see how tessa bailey attempted to make piper more of a well-rounded character but she did feel a bit flat and not as secretly deep as tessa was attempting. a book that did the airheaded, rich girl that has more depth and emotion to her was the deal by elle kennedy and this one just didn't live up to that portrayal of it. i did really love fisherman brendan since i've never read about a character in that career before. him being grumpy and rugged but humble was amazing. i did really like their chemistry but it escalated quite quickly for him being a window that hasn't had an interest in anybody for 7 years. i also really liked the side characters like piper's sister and i can't wait to read her book.
where this book really shined for me was with the setting. i loved this small costal town where everybody knew each other. the fact that everybody knew each other, supported each other, and seeing piper wiggle her way into the hearts of the town was so adorable. i loved seeing and learning abour crab fishing because that's something unique i don't know much about.
i also thought the concept of piper and her sister coming to fix up this old bar was really fun but i wish we dove into it more and saw more of that transformation and more of them connecting with their dead father. we saw a little bit of that connecting happening especially with them finding their grandmother but it kinda just died off.
i do really love the way that tessa writes the setting and banter. she also writes amazing smut and steam. it is not the most steamy thing i've ever read but for it being in a tranditionally published book she writes it really well. some people say it grosses them out and in this book some things were said that weren't my favorite but hey i'm not gonna yuck someone else's yum unless it's actual problamatic. i personally love her writing.
this was a fun read for this time of year and i had a good time despite wanting more from the characters and more exploration of their trauma and grief! if you want a nice summer romance that has a little bit more emotional depth than the average rom-com i would definietly recommend this one!
thank you to avon and harper voyager, tessa bailey, and netGalley for an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review
One of my favorites of her writing! Tessa Bailey really knows what she's doing. Definitely got Schitt's Creek's Alexis vibes from the story. That's fun! Piper got a little tedious in her actions over time, but the way that Brendan came in each time to save her with his grumpy self, I swooned! Loved the storyline and cannot wait to read the second in the series to continue and see how things pan out.
I’m calling all my PNW readers... that love a good RomCom... & Westport IYKYK
Omg I just looked up the blurb on the book and it may have won my PNW heart even more....sharing....
Tessa Bailey is back with a Schitt’s Creek-inspired rom-com about a Hollywood “It Girl” who’s cut off from her wealthy family and exiled to a small Pacific Northwest beach town... where she butts heads with a surly, sexy local who thinks she doesn’t belong.
Literally this was my mind while reading this fun book.... The Simple Life filmed in my neck of the woods...
I absolutely LOVED this book, first off the setting was spot on... Tessa took you to the small town of Westport... which I grew up visiting! and the characters you fall in love with! Probably bias but this is going to be an absolute favorite for me!
In this book, we get to watch Piper adult and grow while falling involve with Brendan. We get to see her be accepted by someone who loves her for her. THE SMUT IS REAL IN THIS BOOK. Tessa Bailey can write a romance! WOAH!
This is one of the absolute best books of 2021, I'm so glad to see Bailey getting hype for Hook Line and Sinker as well!
My first Tessa Bailey book and man was it good! I loved the spice and the relationship between Piper and Brendan. It reminded me of Schitt's creek.
I really wanted and expected to love this, but man I just did not jive with this book. I couldn't get past not liking the main characters of the story, and I just found it to be fairly boring.
I've never seen Schitt's Creek so I had no basis for all the comparisons I've been hearing. I honestly loved Piper as a character all on her own and Brendan is the best hero I've read in awhile. I'm so excited to read the next book in this series!
Thank you to Avon for providing me the ARC of this book.
The first three chapters of the book before Piper went to Westport, she really annoyed me. I found her to be very spoiled and entitled and wasn't able to connect to her as our heroine of the book. But once she started to express her feelings and insecurities I was able to connect with her.
Brendan was a perfect hero, I loved his grumpy, alpha male characteristics. I love how much he didn't want to like Piper as much as how loyal he was.
The book was everything I needed and wanted, Dual POV, Enemies-to-Friends-to-Lovers, Open Door romance and steamy.
Currently reading Hook Line Sinker.
Listen- I had broken up with Tessa Bailey books because her '𝘏𝘰𝘵 & 𝘏𝘢𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥' series just didn't work for me. But- I decided to give her another try and it's safe to say we've kissed and made up. It's about a Schitt's Creek inspired heroine and a stern fishing Captain hero who are both working through their issues by having vulnerable, real-world adult conversations. Communication is sexy. Add dual perspectives, a heartfelt sister relationship, a bar rehab, and the small town Pacific Northwest setting- well it's a win-win-win. It was positively scorching. Like melt your undergarments steamy. Candidly- I'm still not a fan of the sexytime vocabulary/word choice, but it's no longer a deal breaker.
As soon as I finished I immediately requested the second book in the series because I wasn't ready to leave Westport
Was not able to read the entirety of the book and cannot give an accurate or overall rating/review . As a librarian for a big library system, we most likely have a copy of this item. I will look forward to reading it in future since I am sure I will.
I’m a bit all over the place with this one. It may be my favorite Tessa Bailey. It was good and I cared about these characters, but the romance was just a bit too rushed for me.
People say this is grumpy/sunshine, but I don’t fully agree. Piper is very sunshine, but I don’t see Brendan as a grumpy hero. He’s exacting and set in his way, but not grumpy. I never would’ve expected it but the materialistic and vain heroine is becoming a favorite.
I do also like a fish-out-of-water trope and a small town romance so I shouldn’t be surprised I liked this. Both Piper and Brendon learn from each other. They push each other to grow and become better people which I’m a fan of in my romance.
The romance was also very intense when it comes to sexytimes. I always forget Tessa Bailey does write steamier. It also was steamier than I expected from a traditionally published novel. This is not a complaint.
I also really liked the relationship between Piper and Hannah. They are very supportive of each other and have a great sister bond. I’m definitely excited to read Hannah’s romance now.
I was not familiar with Tessa Bailey's previous works so I was not sure what to expect with this book.
The premise of the book is spoiled rich girl from LA made some bad choices and her step=father "punished" her by sending her to a remote Pacific Northwest town. In comes burly good-looking fisherman and the rest is history.
In my honest opinion, this book could have have been listed as written porn. It was to the point of being vulgar. I did not finish the book because it got so graphic. Reader beware. The cute covers on books these days are deceiving in my view.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. All thoughts & opinions are my own. I am sorry for the delay in the review. Not sure how this slipped my list.
I was provided an ARC of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. As someone who spends way too much time on social media, It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey seemed to perfectly capture influencer culture and weave it into how difficult it can make finding meaningful interactions. In enjoyed the journey between Piper and Brendan and am looking forward to reading the sequel.
I really struggled to get into this book. I ended up not finishing because of my annoyance with the heroine. However, I should have realized that before going in since I'm not a big fan of Schitt's Creek that this book was probably not for me. I have read and loved other Tessa Bailey books, which is what prompted me to want to read this one before fully reading the synopsis. What part of the book I did read though was well written, and the pacing was set in a way to hook the reader. I have seen lots of reviews of people loving this book, so I might give it another chance in the future, but at the moment it is not for me. I fully believe that other people will immensely enjoy this book, especially if Schitt's Creek humor and satire appeals to you.
Wow oh wow! This was the best romance I've read this year so far! Absolutely beautiful, sexy, heartwarming, just all around perfect! Brendan is now my new fictional husband! It's gonna be pretty hard to beat him. I really grew to love Piper too during her time at Westport. She cracked me up so many times and she truly was so sweet towards other people in the small town. If you love small town romances, PLEASE pick this one up!
