Live Like Sean by TJ Nelligan had a beautiful message in its simplest form that everyone is different, but that everyone has a place in the world. I am also on this same path of being told by specialists repeatedly that my son born at two pounds will have life long disabilities. What makes this book unique was the journey that happened for Sean and his family was one of resiliency and joy.
The family shared exquisite memories with a true love for their son and made us all wish that we could have known their son. It also celebrated the fact that while we are different, we feel things the same. Various emotions are detailed and advice is quietly shared on how to truly be a kind individual. The special diversity of all children was celebrated and done in an way that will promote inclusive relationships naturally.
I was provided a free copy of this book from Greenleaf Book Group to review from Net Galley. The opinions shared are my own.
This book is a great reminder for people to be more present in their day to day life and live in the moment. It also gives the reader a glimpse into the life of special needs person and how simply they see life in a way that we can't even begin to try. The love that TJ, his family, and friends had for Sean shines throughout this book.
I received an advanced copy of the book from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinion are my own. This book is well written. This book tells you about Sean Nelligan who had special needs and his family. It tell you how families live with children who has special needs. This book will tug at your heart for how Sean made everyone's day. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone it is in stores now for $19.99 (USD).
This book made me cry - but in a good way. I found myself tearing up at the various descriptions of Sean with family members and friends. I wish I had known him. And yet - as the author makes clear - many people would never have interacted with Sean, never made the effort. Would I have been one of those? I don't know - I hope not. I have never known a mentally-challenged person or the family of one though of course I've seen them from time to time. I've always felt sorry for parents when I see them with a child like that - but maybe I shouldn't. Maybe I should be envying them if they have a relationship with that child like T.J. did with Sean.
Not only was Sean a special person, but so were his parents.
I hope this book is a best seller and that the message of Sean's life will resonate with people. I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This is a terrific inspirational read.
This poignant account of a parent's journey with a child is tender, humble, and deeply moving. Have a tissue on hand as your heart resonates with compassionate for this difficult life experience. The family's determination and courage to meet the challenges is enhanced by their love and honor for the incredible gifts that Sean brought to everyone he encountered.
The writing is plain spoken and genuine, connecting the reader with their journey. The overall life lessons are nicely personalized with family stories and tributes by relatives and friends. I did skim some of the many sports stories, although I can appreciate the appeal to those who favor team sports and mostly male exchanges. The father's vulnerability and willingness to see and expand his limitations, his growth in self-awareness, and the beauty and reach of Sean's character are the capitals on my take-away: A GIFT.
The family also took their challenge and transformed it into benefits that will continue growing through community and organizational efforts.
The author's growth, humility, sincerity, compassion and useful insights make this an inspiring and instructive read. May we all live a little more Sean.
