“Their street is called Honors Row. Not my street, theirs. We live in the same neighborhood but orbit in entirely different circles. Those other women, as we call them.”
Sabine, the wife of local politician Mark Miller, currently running for re-election, goes missing on the Fourth of July amid the town fireworks. There is a blood trail, but no Sabine. Mark is distraught. Everyone is a suspect. Friends turn on friends and no one is who they seem. Erica, one of the other women who does not reside on Honors Row, has a sordid past with Sabine that has been kept hidden. As the drama in a designated *Find Sabine* Facebook chat group ramps up, you wonder...will she will ever be found?
The Missing Woman did not wow me. I have read some great domestic thrillers recently and this one just did not hold up to that standard. The plot is fairly unrealistic and it was a slowww, slow burn. I definitely prefer a faster paced thriller. Much of the book was fairly predictable and there were no great, unexpected twists that I have come to expect in a 5 star thriller. But, it did peak my interest in the last 25% of the book and I found myself furiously turning the pages to get to the conclusion. I would recommend The Missing Woman, though, if you enjoy slow burn who-done-its.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for the arc of #TheMissingWoman in exchange for an honest review. Book published on January 6, 2021.
The missing woman is centred around the disappearance of Sabine who is a local politicians wife . It's July 4th and the whole town is out watching the fireworks. Earlier in in the day Erica is at the pool with her best friends and kids, she sees Sabine leave who drops a bracelet and gives her a strange stare. Nothing is as it seems though and everyone is hiding something.
I enjoyed this book, would I call it a psychological thriller no but it doesn't fit into any other category for me the thriller aspect was quite minimal coming quite near the end but I didn't enjoy it any less because of that fact. I liked Erica she was a good main character she has a great group of friends and I liked the mystery surrounding her. Why had Sabine looked at her there doesn't seem to be an obvious answer so going along that journey with her was great.
The layout of the story is fascinating we go from present time to a few weeks before sabines disappears but in blocks rather than jumping back and forth I really enjoyed that because it isn't overly confusing. We get little nuggets of information throughout which set up a narrative but there is something about it that doesn't make sense and the time jump does to some point.
This review is hard to write without littering it with spoilers it's really hard to discuss what I loved without telling you everything. What I will say is it's a great book and I enjoyed it so much, I will be reading more by Georgina Cross. Her written style is clever I found myself asking but what happened and why did she look at her what's going on? That is what I love!!!
I recommend this book for a thought provoking read! Yes the thriller aspect is lacking but it makes it an easy and fascinating read. I enjoyed every page flew through 80% in the first sitting and couldn't wait to finish it! There are a few twist I guessed the one that was quite left field I'm not sure how I worked it out. The book is a testament to find friendship and how deep the bonds go. It's fantastic. 3.5" rounded up to 4 *!
Thank you to the publisher, netgalley and Georgina Cross for the digital advance copy in exchange for my fair and honest review.
After a good debut, this one is a slow burner with mundane characters and a plot with so many holes that I flipped the pages to the end. But there are many other reviewers who have given it 5 stars so maybe it is something to do with me. 2.5 stars
This is a seriously addictive book! It starts off with an explosive prologue, which leaves the reader wanting to know more. We are then transported to a beautiful summer’s day, the 4th of July, where around the community pool are the beautiful and privileged people of Huntsville, Alabama are relaxing, along with those from the other, less privileged, side of town. But the languid and leisurely pace is soon ramped up, when Sabine leaves the pool area, and doesn’t return.
Erica is our narrator, and like everyone else in the town, is upset and worried when she hears that Sabine has disappeared. She thinks she may have noticed something amiss before Sabine left the pool area.
From this moment on, the tension and pace are relentless, and I just could not stop turning the pages. I had no idea what had happened to Sabine, and had to race through the pages to see what would happen next.
When the truth is finally revealed, it’s jaw-dropping. It was not what I expected at all. This domestic thriller will completely consume you, it’s twisty and compelling. Another triumph of a book from Georgina Cross.
Georgina Cross sure knows how to ratchet up the tension until you don't think you can take any more. Another good read with twists and turns that propel you forward, reading furiously to find out what happens next!
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion. I absolutely love to read a Thriller and this book hits a homerun! This story had a Big Little Lies feel to it and will keep you guessing up until the very end. This author is definitely going to be added to my "must read" list from now on! Thank you so much for allowing me the opportunity to read this ahead of time!
Amanda, Erica, and Tish are all divorced women living in a nice community in Huntsville, Alabama. These 3 women are good friends and 2 of them are bringing up their children. It’s July 4th and they are all gathered at the community pool, plus looking forward to the fireworks display later on.
Erica sees a group of wealthy women who live in McMansions in the community: Sabine, Monica, and Carol. Sabine is married to Mark who is a county commissioner and running again for office.
Erica saw Sabine leaving the pool saying she was going home to get more cool drinks for her friends. Shortly afterward, Mark shows up looking for her. When he learns she has gone home, he panics saying she may have been abducted. Coming back from the pool after the fireworks, Erica and her friends see, police surrounding Sabine’s home. They learn it has been broken into and there is blood in numerous spots. That’s when the community comes together and many people go out with flashlights searching for Sabine.
Both Erica and Sabine are keeping secrets from their past. Will this connection play out in this scenario? Yeah. I know that sounds crazy, but believe me, it’s a huge hint without giving it all away. This is a good thriller that sneaks up on you and I’m betting it will surprise you like it did me. A good one!

Absolutely unputdownable! Wow what a thrilling, pacy, addictive wonderful read. A wonderfully insightful and well observed story. I was transported; it took me away from the world for the hours I was reading and after for the characters burrow into your head and you forget they're not real - the mark of an excellent book! Although this is only thd first week of January I know this will be one of my best reads of the year. Liane Moriarty watch out!
The Missing Woman is Ms Cross's second psychological thriller to date and is a story simply fizzing with suspense, set in Huntsville, Alabama. It opens with a prologue in which Sabine Miller is running through a forest, frantically trying to escape the unidentified person chasing her before the plot cuts to present day. It's Saturday Fourth of July and Erica Holloway is enjoying time at the neighbourhood swimming pool with her two children, eleven year old Lydia and seven year old Taylor alongside her best friend Tish Abbott and her five year old son Charlie. Across the pool Erica observes the 'other' women, a clique she had once but no longer envied sunbathing in the ninety five degree heat and like them awaiting the firework display to round off the days celebrations. The group of wealthy friends comprises Sabine Miller, Monica Claiborne and Carol Castillo who all live on Honors Row and are lounging at the poolside together complete with monogrammed towels and matching green sun visors. Known for their large, luxurious homes and wealthy husbands all eyes are often on the three, which makes it even stranger when Sabine disappears off the face of the earth. But not before casting a strange glance at Erica when she left the poolside before the fireworks even kicked off...
A short time later her husband, prominent councilman Mark, discovers that their back door has been smashed open and what appears to be Sabine's blood coats the floor. But in a town where everyone has a secret and skeletons in their closet there are countless suspects who would kill to keep their dirty linen from being aired in public. This is a riveting, addictive and brilliant thriller that is simply overflowing with intense drama and explodes with secrets galore as the story unfolds. It's one of those reads you are pulled into almost immediately and stay glued to the pages through til the dawn chorus. It's believable with a large suspect pool and enough exciting twists and surprises to turn this into a one sitting spectacular. The cast is comprised of primarily unlikeable characters although it's testament to Cross's skill and talent that she manages to elicit sympathy despite this. Erica and Sabine have a past together that they have successfully kept to themselves until this incident and the moral of the story is that no matter how hard you try, your past will usually come back to haunt you when you least expect. It starts at a steady pace before Cross turns up the heat and the suspense continues to rise as the plot progresses until it's palpable. This is a compulsive and captivating domestic thriller and a page-turner I highly recommend.
Excellent read. This book gripped me from the start. Interesting use of social media too. You get real feel for the characters. Gripping ending
Sabine Miller is the missing woman. On a scorching hot Fourth of July in the late afternoon, she leaves the neighborhood pool and vanishes. Married to Mark Miller, the hunky county councilman, she lives in an expensive neighborhood, has loyal best friends and a perfect marriage. Could she have left voluntarily? Or has something else happened?
Erica and Tish were at the pool when Sabine disappeared. Joined by their friend Amanda, they sort through rumors and the gossipy tidbits Amanda learns at her city hall job. While Amanda is revealing secrets, Tish and Erica have been hiding them. A secret relationship has placed Tish in the middle of the investigation and the secret Erica has kept for years will put her and her friends in grave danger.
The Missing Woman is the best kind of domestic thriller. A slow, well-paced start, suspense that gradually builds to the unbearable, and sympathetic, dynamic characters. I’ve been a fan of Georgina Cross since I read The Stepdaughter. I’m looking forward to what comes next from this amazing author! 5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Georgina Cross for this ARC.
Well I did not see that one coming my goodness!!! This crazy thriller will leave you on the edge of your seats. The entire time I was reading it I was trying to predict what was happening but I never figured it out. It was genius!!
What started out as a fun 4th of July celebration in the sun ends in a bloody disappearance of the neighborhood golden woman. Erika has no idea what is going on. What happened to Sabine the neighborhood golden woman. Who would want to hurt her? As Erika waits out the police search at home things seem to not add up. With the suspect pool expanding, everyone close to Erika is questioned even her.
What is Erika hiding? What does she know about the missing woman? Where is Sabine?
This thriller had me gripped to my core. I could not put it down!!! I usually can predict the ending to books like this but I did not see it coming. The plot twist had my jaw on the ground. If you are a fan of thrillers that will have you questioning everything you think you know, definitely check out The Missing Woman!
I really enjoyed this one. It jumped right into the action and held my attention the whole time!
The characters are likeable and anyone who's ever lived in a community like the one described knows how accurately this was described! The writing and the alternating timelines and perspectives made this book difficult to put down. I really looked forward to my lunch hour so I could jump back into this book.
The only thing I didn't like about this book was that the ending tried to do a lot unnecessarily. Having Erica date Marc Miller but pretend not to recognize him and him pretending not to recognize her after the author spent so much time describing what a prominent figure in the community was a little far fetched. I also just felt like it went a lot of crazy places with the attack in the shed and Sabine running away with Tish's car... it just seemed a little unnecessary. It easily could have skipped all that and gone right to Sabine being found out and running. That being said, I did love the Lake Tahoe post card tie back to the flashback parts of the book.
Overall, the book did really keep me guessing and while some turns were a little unrealistic, I did enjoy reading it throughout and that's what really matters.
This book started a little slow for me, but quickly picked up pace. It was definitely unlike anything I’ve read before. I’ll be reading more of this author for sure. If you like a good mystery/thriller and are looking for something different, this one is for you!
BLOG TOUR ** Welcome to my stop on the Bookouture blog tour for The Missing Woman by Georgina Cross! This is a quick read filled secrets and lots of twists and turns.
Erica, a single mother, and her best friend Tish, take their kids to the pool for the 4th of July – along with what seems like everyone else in their community. She’s kind of a mess – schlepping a cooler, towels for the kids, toys, and sunscreen, and they’re a bit late in the day to get good lounge chairs (or any chairs at all.) It’s a stark contrast from Sabine Miller and her crew, with their matching accessories, wealthy husbands and giant homes on the other side of the golf course. Sabine’s crew would never have anything to do with Erica and her friends – they’re all too different. However, when Sabine leaves the pool before the fireworks even begin and gives Erica a pointed look across the pool, Erica is caught off-guard. And when Sabine doesn’t return, and her husband finds their back door smashed open and Sabine’s blood everywhere, everyone’s a suspect and everyone has a secret they don’t want to share…
This one definitely draws you in and makes you want to keep reading. I really liked how the author wrote some chapters from earlier points in time to show the reader the characters’ histories and motivations, instead of just having a character tell us in a random conversation. And the pacing between the chapters set in the present and those in the past was spot on and really left me not wanting to put this book down. I did guess at least part of one of the big twists at the end, but definitely did not figure out the whole thing, which was a nice change since so many of the thrillers out there right now are very predictable, at least if you read enough of these (or watch enough Law & Order to know the usual formula.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from Bookouture and NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. It has not influenced my opinion.
First, I want to thank Georgina Cross, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.
WOW!! 2021 is off to a great start with a must read by Georgina Cross that must be on your TBR list titled The Missing Woman!! I thought her debut book The Stepdaughter was good but oh she topped that!! I am a huge fan of missing person cases but this one is unlike any I have read before!
The cover of the book is spot on with one of the main scenes in the book. Then to see the title you just know one of those women are the missing one. Great job to the graphic designers for capturing the scene perfectly.
There are some parts of the story that may be difficult for readers and may trigger them. Some of them are abortion, adultry, domestic abuse, etc. If this upsets you or bothers you this may not be the book for you.
Georgina did a magnificent job at keeping you on your toes throughout this book wondering what happened to Sabine. The mystery and suspense was intense. When you thought you knew what was going to happen she threw something else in to totally throw you off.
Another thing that Georgina did that was different besides having chapters she had time frames. The story would go from present to twenty-five years ago and you would learn more about the characters. Shocking revelations that impact today’s storyline. It would also go back in other time frames as well. So, don’t blink or you may miss a huge part of the story in the flashbacks.
Something else she did that I thought was very clever and so unique was she included Facebook Group Posts into her chapters.
I love when authors think outside of the box and it is clear that Georgina has definitely did that in The Missing Woman. I even love the unique names she picked out for her characters such as Heidi (very few authors use my name) and Sabine (such a beautiful name).
Sabine Miller is missing! A fourth of July weekend gone wrong. The wife of a prominent councilman, Mark Miller, Sabine was last seen leaving the community pool party much before the fireworks display. Now her husband Mark is looking for her as he came home to find the back door smashed in and some blood.
The whole neighborhood looks for Sabine and while Mark is cleared of any involvement in her disappearance, his opponent Jacob is questioned by the police.
Erica and her friend Tish who live on the 'not so well to do' part of the community have secrets that may be linked to Sabine's disappearance.
The plot has many twists and has a good pace, it also has an element of the evils of the social media and how callous people can be in other's tragedy.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC
It’s the fourth of July and the whole town is gathered at the local pool. Through the sweltering afternoon, the group of single mothers don’t mix with the other women—the ones with the perfect lives and happy marriages. Women like Sabine Miller.
But then, Sabine shoots Erica a desperate look across the water and suddenly disappears. As Erica reaches to the back gate, all she finds is a silver charm bracelet that Sabine dropped on her way out.
When Sabine’s husband Mark arrives and realizes she’s missing, he phones the cops straight away. “Someone has been threatening Sabine,” he says. “Now they’ve kidnapped her.”
Hours later the whole town is searching the streets, calling Sabine’s name over and over. On the TV, Mark is begging for someone to bring his wife home.
The truth is, Erica was the last person to see Sabine alive—and it’s killing her inside. When the cops arrive at her house asking questions, she’s terrified they’ll find out what happened years ago between her and Sabine. Something which she has never told anyone
I was so eager to read this book especially since I loved Georgina Cross’s debut book. I just couldn’t wait to get started! And I wasn’t disappointed at all. This was such an exciting read that I actually managed to finish it in just a few hours. I didn’t want to stop till I reached the end.
The plot is well written and the pace is maintained throughout the book. Both the main and supporting characters were good and added some element to the plot.
As you begin reading you wonder if Sabine was kidnapped because it’s difficult to find a reason why would she leave on her own and give up her comfortable life. But as the hidden secrets of each of the characters come tumbling out, you realize that this is something more than just a missing persons case.
There were definitely some amazing twists throughout the book but my favorite has to be the ending. It was simply perfect!
Thank You to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC!
You think this is like all the other mystery/thriller type books but you would be wrong, so very wrong. i have never read a book like this one.
Sabine Miller goes missing, she may be hurt and needs to be found. Everyone has a secret and with every secret things change. There are so many twists and turns you may get whiplash. As the secrets come out, you think you have it figured out half way thru the book (at least I did). I was shocked by the ended and I would have never thought of it.
This book is a very good read. I'm going to be looking at other book by this author for now on, she is a very good tale spinner.
thank you for letting me read this book. #NetGalley #TheMissingWoman
You don't want to miss out on this book. It's the best book I have read in a long time! Every Chapter is super interesting. There are no slow parts!
I loved everything about it. I don't want to give anything away, you must read it for yourself! I am promptly buying her first book.
Thank you so much, NetGalley, Georgina Cross, and your publisher, for letting me read and review this fast-paced book!
