I had a great time reading this graphic novel. Two siblings are just having a normal day until one stumbles upon a mysterious looking old tree house. They decide to check it out and the other sibling follows them. Inside are more books than either of them have ever seen. After a wish gets made a truly amazing adventures begins for them both. Where they end up is a sight to behold that carries with it breathtaking wonders and plenty of dangers too. As this tale comes to a close this adventure has only just begun for these siblings.
I am so excited that the magic tree house series is being adapted to graphic novels. Dinosaurs before dark graphic novel was just as amazing and the chapter book. I loved seeing the stories come to life- the triceratops was gorgeous and the babies were so cute.
The Magic Tree House series continues to be a favorite of students today and this Graphic Novel adaptation will not disappoint them! Jenny Laird and the comic team of Kelly and Nichole Matthews have done an amazing job of creating the graphic novel of Dinosaurs Before Dark. Readers will enjoy the detailed drawings and just the right amount of text for beginning readers. Thank you to Random House Children’s and NetGalley for providing this digital ARC for review. #dinosaursbeforedarkgraphicnovel #netgalley
The Magic Treehouse books hold a special place in my heart for a variety of reasons and the graphic novel adaptation is absolutely fabulous. It holds true to the original story but helps bring it alive in a new way. While I still think that kids should read the standard Magic Treehouse books, this is a great way to get them enticed into the series and to meet Jack and Annie.
LOVED this! Brought back all the childhood nostalgia feels of reading this series. It was a lot of fun and the colors were so vibrant!
Jack and Annie are headed to graphic novels! The Magic Tree House books have been a staple in libraries for decades; now they're transitioning to more visual storytelling mediums with graphic novels, starting with the first Magic Tree House adventure, Dinosaurs Before Dark. Jack and Annie discover a treehouse loaded with stacks of books, make a wish to see dinosaurs, and discover that they're been transported back in time to the prehistoric era! Annie befriends a couple of plant-eaters, they run from a T-Rex, and try to figure out how to get home again. The story translates wonderfully to a graphic novel medium, and the artwork has a manga influence, which makes for big facial expressions; the artwork is colorful and eye-catching. Less dense text relies on visual storytelling, making this even more appealing to emerging and struggling readers. This series is going to be a hit.
I hope this is the first to come as far as graphic novels for this series! What a fun, fun read! The illustrations were vivid but not too busy for someone just starting to read graphic novels. Can't wait for more.

My students are obsessed with Magic Tree House. I think this is a great adaptation of such a well-loved series. Each book contains an adventure where Jack and Annie travel in time and place in a magic tree house, which is filled with books of where they can (and most likely will) go. It has so many educational tidbits for young readers while also being a great read for those who are developing their vocabulary and reading skills. It is a great bridge before reading the books for sure. This first adventure (Dinosaurs Before Dark) seemed pretty true to the book version as well.
This is definitely one that I will be adding to my classroom library!
First there was The Babysitters’ Club, and now another classic book series has made its way to the amazing world of graphic novels. Since its initial release in 1992, Mary Pope Osborne’s Magic Tree House series has won numerous awards for both book series and author, has grossed millions in book sales, and has sold hundreds of millions of copies. And now this beloved series is back, but taken on a new form. Jenny Laird, along with illustrators Kelly and Nichole Matthews, have brought this series back to life in graphic novel form. The vibrantly-colored illustrations and easy-to-follow format bring the story to life for a whole new generation of readers. The fast-paced, attention grabbing plot places you right there with Jack and Annie in the time of the dinosaurs. I recommend this book for younger readers who prefer graphic novels to regular fiction books, because the original story doesn’t get lost, even with the shorter format. This book is also great for younger readers who are transitioning from easy readers to chapter books. The simple text allows for an easy reader feel. I would also recommend this book to older readers who may have read the original series. Sometimes it’s good to go back and discover your favorites all over again.
A great adaption of a beloved series!
This graphic novel is an adaption of the first book in the Magic Tree House series. The pages are colorful and a great blend of animation and realistic detail. The illustrations are detailed with a good balance of dialogue on the pages. The images often speak for themselves. allowing readers to engage with the art more. The text captured from the book to the graphic novel is good, with most text being spoken text. The transition between chapters captures the intensity and excitement between chapters.
A great option for fans of the Magic Tree House series and a good alternative introduction to the series.
I actually enjoyed the way this book was not just written by drawn. Bravo bravo - full review in process. Thank you NetGalley for the ARC
The artwork in this book is very bright and appealing. The brother and sister relationship is refreshing to see them working together and helping each other. I feel this will be good for younger readers who are interested in Magic Tree House but are not ready to read the chapter book.
I love that The Magic Tree House is coming back around in a new form, for a new generation! Reading this however, seemed to be for a very young audience.
I'm a bit upset that Jack and Annie didn't explore that far outside of the tree house and we really only encounter 4 - 5 different dinosaurs during that time.
The art work and coloring are amazing. Even without words to verbally communicate they built bonds with the dinosaurs.
I can't wait to read more. Very much enjoyed this story and the tree house being opened again for magic and more!

As a Mom who has read every Magic Tree House book I was thrilled to see the graphic novel version! I have a seven year old son who is very I intimidated by “long chapters” but will happily read graphic novels and to see our favorite books put into a format he can read was a relief. I have already preordered the book on Amazon!
First, in hopefully, the series of graphic novels based on the Magic Tree House books. This is a great adaptation of the "original" book. Readers will like the vivid illustrations, the dialogue between the brother and sister, as well as the dinosaurs. This is a solid addition to an elementary school library collection.
The original chapter book series of the Magic Tree House books are in such high demand at my library, so I was eager to see how they translated to graphic novels. The illustrations are beautiful, and really convey the action of the book quite well. The dialogue was sparse, but I think in graphic novels for this age group that's a feature, not a bug. Overall I think this is going to be a hit, but definitely not replace the original books in most readers' hearts.
Based on the classic Magic Tree House series Dinosaurs Before Dark is the first graphic novel installment. Many readers are familiar with the children’s favorite series where siblings, Jack & Annie, find a treehouse that transports them back in time. In this version Jack & Annie are taken to the age of the dinosaur after discovering the treehouse. Fans will be familiar with the story. The graphics are good but the storyline is sparse. I feel beginning readers will enjoy the book but may find the novel more adventurous. I think the original series is a superior text.
This book was so much fun to read! I finished it in one sitting and was already wishing for the second. I think it is a beautiful rendition of the original novel and it brought back all the nostalgia I was hoping for. I think this book needs to be in every classroom in the country to get kids interested in history/science/graphic novels. It checks all the boxes in my book! Can’t wait to purchase a physical copy
This is a wonderful version of the Magic Treehouse. The graphic novel format is exciting for hesitant readers. My oldest son (8) had previously read the original chapter book and my youngest (6) is still to young for the original. Both were able to fully enjoy this book and are excited for more graphic novels in the series. .
My eight-year loves the original series and has read them all. Since she especially enjoys graphic novels, she was very excited when I got this one for us to read together. While she did like this one, especially the "cool" pictures, she thought it seemed a little bit short, and preferred the details given in the chapter book over this one. For those that have never read the original chapter books though, this might appeal to them more.
