The Magic Tree House series is such a classic! Lots of my students love it, because it plays with their imagination. This is the graphic novel version of the first book of the series, when Jack and Annie first found the tree house and discovered the magic. The illustrations are lovely and colorful, and the graphics are easy to follow.
I think this would be great for kids who are reluctant readers!
Loved this graphic novel and so did my son. The illustrations are great and definitely add to the storyline. Hopefully we see more of these in the future.
This is a really quick read as a graphic novel for the 7- to 9-year-old crowd. The illustrations are bright, the text is sparse, and they kept the signature line, “Then everything was still. Absolutely still.” My Magic Tree House books don’t circulate as much as they used to, despite new copies. I hope that this graphic version, and any that follow, will serve as a “gateway book” to the Jack and Annie books.
I LOVE Mary Pope Osborne's books. As a kid, I read every single one I could possible land my hands on. As you can imagine, I was beyond excited when I saw that there were comic books being made from the beloved books I read in elementary.
The drawings were beautiful and they did a wonderful job bringing childhood me's imagined version of Jack and Annie to life. Of course, the story was fantastic and I cannot wait to read the next one. Overall, amazing book, lots of nostalgia.
5/5.
Graphic Novels have become a trend in the past few centuries. Luckily, these Graphic novels tie in well with books that students should read in the classroom. Dinosaurs Before Dark, the first book of the Magic Tree House series, was turned into a beautiful Graphic novel that I will definitely have in my classroom.
The illustrations are beautiful and allow the story to come to life. Right away, readers are immersed into the story of Jack and Annie. The descriptions throughout, dialogues and overall scenes make this comic a worthy read for any early childhood scholar.
So much fun!!! I really enjoyed this pictorial version of the chapter book. Bright colors, great character emotion, and a nice story pace made me reimagine myself back into Jack and Annie's world. I wouldn't change a thing. Great motivation to get readers excited about the chapter book series too!
My 10 year old son loved this new twist on Magic Tree House books with the graphic novel! Fun story and wonderful graphics! Keep them coming!
I am so excited for this book and cannot wait to purchase it! Magic Treehouse books are a favorite among my fifth graders and as I'm looking to transition to second grade this graphic novel is a perfect fit for the younger students. Those that are reading at or above grade level can still read the original and those that are a little below grade level can read these and they can talk to each other about the books.
I received a copy of #DinosaursBeforeDarkGraphicNovel from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Magic Tree House has been a beloved series for generations. Now, with the new graphic novel version available, new generations will be able to find the same love in this wonderful series.
Dinosaurs Before Dark is the first version of The Magic Tree House story that has been translated into a graphic novel. I think the decision to rewrite this beloved series into this popular format will prove to be a hit. The illustrations are bright, and kids are going to devour every Magic Tree House story that gets this awesome update!
Brings me right back to my childhood. I know so many kids that are going to love this book. The illustrations are great!!
For Gr 1-4. A beloved series gets new life in this graphic novel edition. We follow Jack and Annie on their adventures into prehistoric times through the Magic Treehouse. The text is simple, clear, and easy to follow for new readers or new graphic book readers. The different dialog bubbles indicate what is happening whether it is a transition between scenes, internal thoughts, sounds, and dialog between the characters. The illustrations complement the text and add a lot to the story when there would have been expository writing in the chapter book. This will delight new readers to the series and intrigue fans of the chapter books. Not a must-have for libraries, but if you have space and a population that can't get enough graphic novels you will want to add this to your shelves.
This will certainly be a huge hit with fans of the series and I have high hopes that is also going to introduce a lot of new readers to the adventures of Jack and Annie. Vibrant, colorful illustrations for the win!
For Libraries: Let's face it, you are going to need to get this one.
This was such a fun remix of an older favorite!
Young and old alike will love this story... it brought a lot of memories back reading this with my own kiddos.
I can’t wait to get a physical copy of this!
I was a little skeptical initially, but the team that working on these has done a great job. Dinosaurs Before Dark is quite visually appealing and, beyond the obvious built-in appeal with the existing series, is a great introductory graphic novel. I would almost categorize this as an emergent reader version of the chapter book series. I'm sure kids will devour these faster than the artists can keep up!
This was an adorable graphic novel for kids. My nine year old daughter loves this series and she loves graphic novels. This was the perfect book doe her slabs she really enjoyed it. We will be recommending it to her friends
This was absolutely wonderful! I love that the beloved series has now been adapted into a Graphic novel. I think young readers will truly enjoy seeing their favorite characters in a graphic novel. I hope the series continues to be adapted.
My kids all love the Magic Treehouse books and they love graphic novels so when I saw this book I was so excited to have my kids read it!
My 10 year old son couldn’t wait to start it. He blew through it in no time and he said it was AMAZING! Here is his review:
This book was awesome. It was so easy to read and the pictures were great! Very colorful and cool. The story was funny and exciting. Once I started reading I didn’t want to stop till I was done with the whole book. I hope they will make more of the a Magic Treehouse series into graphic novels!
Thank you NetGalley and the Publisher for this book!
This brings me back! I loved this series as a child. Me and my sister had all the books and would read them all the time. I love graphic novels. To see one of my favorite childhood books come to live in an artistic rendering is amazing. I love the art style!
This was such a nostalgic read for me!
Magic Tree House was my favorite series to read as a kid, and it made me fall in love with reading! I was so excited to see that there is a graphic novel version of the books coming out, talk about some serious fan girling!
The illustrations were beautiful and it was so fun to relive Jack and Annie’s first adventure in the Tree House! This had all the same magic and fun as the first time I ever read this book and all the books to follow!
Very much looking forward to the next installment!
Remember Magic Tree House? Two kids find a tree house in the woods and are whisked away on magical adventures throughout time and space. I used to devour these books as a kid. I always loved the titles. They followed a theme for each arc. The first set was all about times of day, there was one set named after days of the week, stuff like that. I always thought that was cool. And the cover art! Man, I loved that.
So, when I saw that the first Magic Tree House book was being adapted into a graphic novel AND it was available on NetGalley, you bet your booty I snatched that up.
This was a really straightforward adaptation of the first book. Jack and Annie discover the tree house, they get transported to the time of the dinosaurs, they have adventures. That’s pretty much the formula for all of these books, but why mess with perfection? The tree house is filled with books of all kinds. I saw one that was just titled “Llamas” and I really hope to see that one someday. Anyway, Jack is flipping through a dinosaur book and conveniently points to a dinosaur and says “Man, I wish I was there.” The tree house is like “Cool” and starts spinning. They end up in dino times which is where I want to be all the time.
Jenny Laird is the adapter of this book and she does a fantastic job with the dialogue and all that, but I think there are tons of props to be had for the illustrators, Kelly and Nichole Matthews. The art is just superb. It’s cutesy and fun and bright. I mean, come on, look at those adorable kids! My only complaint is that the T-Rex wasn’t covered in feathers, but I will let that slide.
Overall, this is a fantastic book to pick up for a reluctant reader. It’s simple and has a very enticing premise. It’s also the perfect scratch for your nostalgia itch if you are in your late 20’s. 5/5, 10/10, highly recommended.
Make sure you pick up a copy from your favorite local indie on May 4, 2021.
Thanks Netgalley for the eARC!
