This is a great book! I loved the original as a kid and this made the book more fun! The books are always a fun read. I can’t wait to recommend this book to kids. It’s going to be a great read for the less advanced adventure readers. And a great way to introduce graphic novels to a reader!
A fantastic graphic novel of an already popular series! The artwork is great and so well covered of the original book. This will constantly be out at the library I'm sure and I hope they make a ton of them :)
Thank you NetGalley!
I just reviewed Dinosaurs Before Dark Graphic Novel by Mary Pope Osborne. #DinosaursBeforeDarkGraphicNovel #NetGalley
Oh man, the nostalgia! I loved this series as a kid, although I never read the whole series. After picking up this graphic novel, I am going to be scouring the thrift stores for the books I don't have. It's just the cutest series!
I love Jack and Annie, their sibling relationship is shown so well even through a graphic novel. Jack is so protective over Annie and Annie just wants to have fun (and befriend dinosaurs).
The artwork in this book is adorable. I think it really fit the storyline. It's colorful and bubbly.
To me, a lot of the time the plot doesn't get explained well due to the nature of graphic novels being somewhat short. Already knowing what happens in this book, I think everything was explained well and the plotline was whole and nothing was missing to make it confusing or anything.
There were a few pages of the second graphic novel at the end and I just wanted to keep going! I can't wait for the next one.
Dinosaurs before Dark is the first book in the Magic Treehouse graphic novel series. Jack and Annie find a treehouse in the woods, and climb inside. It is filled with books. When Jack picks up a Dinosaur book and wishes he could see them, the treehouse begins to spin and they are whisked into the past, where they meet and learn about dinosaurs of different kinds.
This is a fantastic Children's graphic novel with cute and colorful illustrations that any child will love. Children will learn about dinosaurs while also experiencing a time travel adventure with Jack and Annie. The story is interesting and even as an adult, I loved it. I plan to purchase this series for my grandson. You can't get any higher praise than that.
I received a free temporary digital copy of this book from Random House. My review is voluntary.
Thank you to #Netgalley and Random House Children's for allowing me to read a digital ARC of Dinosaurs Before Dark (Magic Tree House Graphic Novel) by Mary Pope Osborne and adapted by Jenny Laird. This book will be published May 4, 2021. All opinions are my own.
On their way home one evening, siblings Jack and Annie find a mysterious and magical tree house full of books. After opening a book and making a wish, the two are transported to the prehistoric past. Now, they have to figure out how to survive and get back home.
This was a super fun graphic novel that was very quick to read. It instantly took me back to my childhood and reminded why I loved the Magic Tree House books. I love that they're getting a graphic novel update. The illustrations are colorful and vibrant and truly bring the story to life. This is a delightful read that is perfect for an elementary student and the young at heart.
I loved this series as a child and I am so excited there is a now a graphic novel. This series helped me with my love of reading and now it can reach a whole new level of readers who prefer graphic novels over chapter books.
Thanks to Random House Children's for the electronic advance copy of "Dinosaurs Before Dark: Graphic Novel" by Mary Pope Osborne, adapted by Jenny Laird , illustrated by Kelly + Nichole Matthews.
AHHHHH I am so excited that these graphic novel adaptation of Magic Tree House are going to be out in the world!
I have no doubt my kids will be counting down the days until May 4th to get their hands on this book and it will introduce this magical series to an entire new set of readers who might be shying away from the chapter books simply because they aren't graphic novels. This is one of my favorite series to recommend and read aloud with young readers and families and now they are fantastic for read-to-self for beginning and emerging readers as well as those who are confident in their reading abilities.
"Dinosaurs Before Dark" is perfectly adapted with engaging illustrations and a well told graphic novel story.
I received an ARC of Mary Pope Osborne's Dinosaurs Before Dark Graphic Novel and read it with my two oldest daughters. - 5-years-old and 7-years-old - and we couldn't put it down. They are huge fans of Mary Pope Osborne and love the classic. first book in the Magic Treehouse series. Reliving the story in a graphic novel was a special treat for the kids that brought the story to life. To be honest, it was easy for me to get into the story quickly, too.
It was a fast, fun family read and I highly recommend it. They are already eagerly anticipating the author's second graphic novel, "The Knight at Dawn".
I strongly recommend this book for early readers and/or a good family read for kids like my 5-year-old who are in between a love of picture books and just starting to enjoy longer chapter books.
I really enjoyed reading Magic Tree House books with my classroom and students, and even utilizing these books for guided reading instruction. I’m happy to see there are new ones, as I tend to go through so many each year.
I loved the original Magic Tree House series as a kid and was excited to see that graphic novel versions of the stories were being released. I really enjoyed Dinosaur Before Dark and just wish that it was longer.
The Magic Treehouse series is a popular one in my school library. I am sure that the students will love this graphic novel adaptation. The illustrations are well done. This well loved, well known story feels fresh. The vibrant colors are delightful.
I will recommend this to my students who enjoy The Magic Treehouse series already and those who are fans of graphic novels.
I was never much of a fan of the Magic Tree House books. I much preferred Junie B Jones. Currently it looks like the MTH has ended at book 55 which was published in 2016, but a whole new group will be introduced to these stories and characters through graphic novels. The Graphic novels don’t seem to be as easy as the chapter books were, but that may be a misconception by the author. The graphics were good and the story translated well. I can not wait to read the next one.
I grew up reading the Magic Tree House books, and to finally see them in graphic novel format is amazing! As the first foray into the series, Dinosaurs Before Dark easily captures the heart of the kids and their adventures, so I can only imagine that moving forward will be just as spectacular. The dialogue is definitely trimmed down some, but is bolstered by imagery and color fitting for Jack and Annie.
I adore the magic tree house series! As an elementary librarian, it’s one of my favorite series to recommend. There is nothing better than seeing a child get hooked on this series and keep reading. I am so excited to be able to share this reimagined graphic novel with my students and have the magic tree house series appeal to a new audience!
This was a wonderful adaptation of the original chapter book. The illustrations are bright and colorful and really engage the reader in the story. I feel like this will be a great introduction to chapter books for children who still enjoy picture books, but are looking for something a little longer.
Dinosaurs Before Dark Graphic Novel by Mary Pope Osborne, illustrated by Kelly and Nichole Matthews is so well -done. My sons and my students love the Magic Tree House series and even my middle school son saw me reading this and took his turn with it. What a fantastic new spin on an old favorite series!
A fun graphic adaptation of a popular children's series. The illustrations are wonderful and perfectly in line with the story.
This book was revived from its previous text version by making the story come to life with its illustrations. My students really enjoyed this book many years ago. Through this graphic novel, this series has been brought back to life in my classroom. My students enjoyed looking at the images and it helped them picture the words. I enjoyed the illustrations and the story of prehistoric dinosaurs. I look forward to more graphic novels in this series in the future! I can already predict that this graphic novel will be the first book grabbed off my bookshelf as soon as I add it to my classroom library.
I originally read the Magic Tree House books as a child and was a big fan (though my younger brother loved them even more). I was shocked to learn, when I began working as a children’s librarian a couple years ago, that not only is the series still ongoing but still very popular. To this day I continue to check out Magic Tree House books to my patrons and recommend them to those who are not already familiar with them.
It was recently, while scrolling through NetGalley, that I cam across the ARC of the first Magic Tree House graphic novel. I am personally a big fan of graphic novels and was recently able to finally create a graphic novel area in the children’s section of my library. So, I was very excited to read a copy of this book.
The book itself was a graphic novelization of the first Magic Tree House book, Dinosaur’s Before Dark. I will admit to not having read that book in quite awhile, but as far as I could tell the contents were pretty true to the original story. But, what was quite nice were the additional details provided by the visual format without having to depend on intermittent illustrations. For example, readers are able to see some very familiar titles in the books in the treehouse. In addition, while there is nothing particularly “modern” about the graphic novel (which is great for its ability to last on the shelves) the book did seem more fresh and updated. I thought the art was well done and the colors very bright, which would be appealing to young readers.
This was ultimately a big draw for me, I think these books are great for young reluctant readers who would really like Magic Tree House if they tried it, but perhaps just are not there yet. These graphic novels could be a great “gateway book”. As a result, I definitely plan to purchase this book for my library when the book is available for purchase and plan to recommend it to Magic Tree House fans, graphic novel readers, and reluctant readers.
(Thank you to Netgalley and the Random House Children's for the ARC)
A mysterious tree house appears in the woods behind Jack and Annie's house. Before they could figure out what is going on they are magically transported to the prehistoric past. This is a graphic novel adaptation of the first book in the Magic Tree House Series.
I saw this and had high hopes. This series is one of the few things that my children shared. My daughter is 22 and my youngest is 15, they grew up with the Magic Tree House Series. Even now if you were to say "It spun faster" they will instantly respond with "and everything went still, absolutely still". The tree house pages were beautiful. All of my favorite lines were included exactly as they were in the novels.
When Jack and Annie first come into the tree house all of the books are there with the titles from other Magic Tree House adventures. I loved looking through the background and remembering all of the other books in the series. It brought back so many memories of sitting with my kids and reading. I loved it so much and cannot wait to get my hands on this book. I hope they continue to adapt the series. I will be getting a copy for myself and for my classroom.
