In Kate the Chemist the Birthday Blastoff, Kate has to figure out how to be in three places at the same time. Although Kate's initial plan doesn't work, she uses her scientific background to try again. Each chapter begins with a definition of a scientific term. Kate takes on a scientific personality by creating hypotheses, critical thinking, and experimenting. It is an easily digestible way for younger readers to see how to incorporate this type of thinking into their everyday lives.

Kate solves her problems without the help of grown-ups, and also know when to ask for help. Lab safety is discussed and throughout the book there is support for failure as a good thing. This series of books helps girls see themselves as STEM thinkers instead of the stereotypical books for girls on shopping, cooking etc. There are experiments for the readers to try in the back of the books. This would make for a great book club read for 3-6 graders.
