Oppel does a wonderful job of carrying the momentum from the other two books in the series and wrapping it all up well. I definitely would recommend it to middle graders who like action and sci-fi.
How much can I tell of a book that ends a series, is an advanced copy, won't be there until May? Like the first two, there is plenty to love about the growth and strength of Anaya, Petra, and Seth and Oppel's ability to create complexity in both old and new characters immediately. You will enjoy those new characters and the return of others. The edginess of nearly every scene, like in the first two books, will keep you nervous, wanting to read on, yet worried about what that might mean. You might need to walk around a little bit before you read on! I enjoyed it very much, am sad to see The Overthrow end. Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC.
Fantastic conclusion to a really awesome middle school sci-fi/horror series. I was so excited and grateful when I received an ARC through Net Galley for the final installment because I’ve been hooked on this trilogy. Great well-formed characters that stay with you when the book is done, nonstop action, super creative story telling, and a plot that make you think about the world we inhabit.
This final book in the series starts where right where book two ended, and the action continues non-stop from there. The series wraps up well, showing the earth and the characters moving on from the invasion. But I found myself still longing to know more about Anaya, Petra and Seth and the rest of their lives: a sign of a great book! The whole series is highly recommended for Middle Grade readers who like action, adventure and science fiction.
I’ve been so impressed with this series and the final book in the trilogy did not disappoint. The stakes are higher, the action is nonstop, and the alternating POV continues to naturally drive the story forward.
The crytogens have arrived! Oppel uses just enough details from real animals to describe the crytogens that readers are able to build a fascinating mental image, but remain desperate to collect additional details as they get deeper into the book.
Anaya, Petra, and Seth have become more comfortable with their new abilities bringing more responsibility for each of them as they work towards their shared goal of stopping the invasion. The characters spend more time apart, which makes the time they are together feel that much more special.
Now that I’ve finished the series I’m looking forward to rereading it and hoping for a film adaptation.
A great final chapter to The Overthrow series. Extremely relevant with our current world climate. Thrive takes us on a journey dealing with, change, friendship, and the fight for what's right.
I loved the first book in this series. It's why I ended up reading the whole trilogy. The third book was better than the second but still wasn't as good as the first.
Our three main characters mature quite a bit in Thrive. The all deal with the arrival of the aliens in a different way. The we must clean up our environment message was there but not overly preachy. I got the feeling that the kids will have a hard time going back to just being kids after having all that responsibility thrust upon them.
