The Other Couple is not your typical psychological thriller. Rather than a gripping whodunnit read, it follows a couple (Skye and Joe) trying to blackmail another couple (Maggie and Brad) for money.
Skye and Joe find a way to get invited to stay with Maggie and Brad at their holiday home at Lake Tahoe after a single meeting. As the couples bond with each other, Skye and Joe find out that Maggie has been having an affair with one of Brad’s clients (Brad is a marriage counselor). The couple moves forward with blackmailing Maggie only to have a boating accident change up their plans.
There were a few twists that I saw coming, unfortunately, making the thriller a bit stale. The plot was decent, but my main issue was the fact that I wasn’t rooting for any of the characters. All of them had major issues, which is fine, but had no redeeming qualities. In addition, the development of the characters wasn’t that great. I think Grant could have spent a bit more time looking at their histories and giving them at least one redeeming quality to make them likable.
This is a two-star read for being a quick and easy read, but it was very predictable and not gripping. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy to review. My opinions are my own.
The other couple is a story about two couples and the lengths they would go to hide their secrets. This is not my typical go to book but I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It kept me on the edge of my seat trying to guess the ending and I couldn't get there fast enough. I would be happy to read more by this author.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read and review this book. The opinions are my own.
The other couple by Cathryn Grant.
This was a good read. A likeable story. I didn't have any favourite characters. This one was a bit of a let down for me. 3*.
Amazing story. Well developed characters that are in a twisted engrossing thriller. Highly recommended. Super suspense that comes to a satisfying end! Highly recommended . A true roller coaster thrill ride
I was in the mood for some good old-fashioned misery and evil, and I certainly got that from this book. I don’t mean that in a bad way, I mean I wanted something dark and a book that was the epitome of a psychological thriller. This gave me everything I wanted.
Right from the start, you are on the edge of your seat, wanting to know what Skye and Joe are up to. When there is a big turn of events before we even hit the halfway mark, I honestly didn’t know where else the book could go.
It does plod on a little and lulls you into a false sense of vacations, food and sun for a little bit but then bam the ending comes, and there is twist upon turn—deceit upon trickery. I was back on the edge of my seat once more.
We see the entire story through the eyes of the four main players, Skye, Joe, Maggie and Brad, so we know what all of them are thinking. It doesn’t get confusing at any point and is obvious who you are following at all times.
This was a unique (for me) storyline, and even though there was that little bit of a plod, it still moved at a fair pace. It kept me engaged at all times.
I took a chance on this unknown (again to me) author while browsing NetGalley for a ‘Read Now’ book when the romantic comedy I was supposed to be reading just wasn’t doing it for me. I needed an alternative and fast. I’m certainly glad I gave this one a go, and I will be looking into more of this author’s work next year!
I enjoyed this one. It was a good, easy read. I would also read more by this author in the future. Overall, I'd give 3/5 stars.
I've found this book really difficult to review. There were some aspects that I liked and I really wanted to love the book but then other bits of it just didn't reach the mark for me.
I found the premise for The Other Couple really interesting and on the whole I enjoyed the writing style. However, I wanted to scream at Maggie and Brad for being so gullible at the start, maybe this was the authors intention. If you're that stupid that you agree to have strangers come live with you, do you deserve repercussions?
Although there were plenty of twists and turns, I did see the majority of them coming. This may just be down to the amount of books in this genre that I read and other readers may be more shocked by them, however I didn't see the big twist at the end coming.
This was a good book that I think a lot of people will enjoy.
3.5 stars
Overall, this was a fun, quick read. I loved the setting in Lake Tahoe and I could picture the gorgeous vacation house, boat, and views. The characters were interesting and I liked how it was told from different characters' points of view. There were a couple of fun twists, though nothing too groundbreaking. My main negative feedback is that the ending seemed really, really rushed.
They planned a dream vacation. They got a trip to hell.
Maggie and Brad are on vacation at Lake Tahoe when they meet another couple, Skye and Joe. The four hit it off so well that Maggie invites their new friends to share her beautiful lakeside rental.
What she doesn’t realize is Skye and Joe aren’t just some random couple. They have been watching Maggie and Brad, have chosen them carefully….
And now, when they discover that Maggie has a secret which could destroy her marriage, they start turning the screws, pushing their own sinister agenda. But have they selected their victim wisely? Or does Maggie also have a dark side?
As the pressure builds, what should have been a dream vacation begins to look more like the inner circle of hell. Before it’s over all four will be changed forever – and at least one of them will be dead…
The Other Couple - a gripping psychological thriller with a nerve-shredding climax. From the best-selling author of The Guest and The Good Neighbour.
I really enjoyed reading this book it had me gripped from the beginning and even though some things were predictable there were alot that you would not of predicted, this left you wanting to read on and I love that about a book.
This was a thrilling read and would recommend this book highly.
I felt that it was well written and loved that you got to red all the thoughts of the characters.

They planned a dream vacation. They got a trip to hell.
Maggie and Brad are on vacation at Lake Tahoe when they meet another couple, Skye and Joe. The four hit it off so well, that Maggie invites their new friends to share her beautiful lakeside rental. They have been targeted by Joe and Skye and before the vacation ends, their life as they know it is taken!
Secrets never die! The book is written with point of view from all four characters, each character's perspective on how their secrets unravel their peace. I thought I knew what was going to happen, but in the end was still surprised. The only issue was that the characters were only developed to what we needed to know to get this story and thus leading to an inevitable plot twist.
Overall a good psychological thriller, encompassing secrets and blackmails. Thank you Netgalley and Publishers for my copy!
Thank you NetGalley for letting me read this book. I was very excited to read it as I love thrillers. I did find it a little slow in places but absolutely did not see the final twist coming. Joe and Skye like to con free holidays out of other vacationers. Unfortunately for Brad and Maggie they are the next targets and Skye and Joe work hard to make the other couple's lives unravel.
Thank you NetGalley and Inkubator Books for my ARC. Wow! The final twist in this book totally blew me away. I kept wondering where the storyline was heading and many of the twists caught me by surprise. Maggie’s decision to invite a strange couple to the vacation home she shares with her husband, is a choice that sets the course for deception and betrayal. Everyone in this twisted tale has secrets. Keeping them hidden may prove to be deadly. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you to NetGalley, Cathryn Grant and the publisher for the ARC of this book.
I really enjoyed this thriller and found myself reading it every spare moment. I didn’t really know what to expect from the book and loved all the little twists that it kept on giving.
Joe and Skye are con artists, making their money through preying on others. So when they spark a “friendship” with Maggie and Brad, a couple they meet in Lake Tahoe, it is one that is pre-planned. They insert themselves into Maggie and Brad’s vacation, selling themselves as the perfect other couple to spend time with... but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read The Other Couple by Catherine Grant. I was excited to read this book, as it's not my typical genre preference. I need to branch out so I thought this would be a great book to do so. Unfortunately I didn't care for it. I'm not sure if it's because I haven't read books of this type before or if it's just the book in general. I didn't feel connected to the four main characters at all. Maybe to one, sort of. Nothing pushed me to keep reading, and it took me far longer to read than I expected. The plot seemed pretty predictable, which is weird because I am always wrong about what is going to happen. I'm not sure if I'd recommend it to a friend or not. If this was their genre preference I'd be interested to see if they shared my opinion or not.
This book was quite LUKEWARM in this December cold and couldn't warm me up much.
My expectations wasn't met, MAYBE BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME.
This one had me hooked from the beginning. Asking a couple you just met to stay with you is asking for trouble. And it sure was. I got through this book rather quickly as I wanted to see where it was going. The ending came up rather abruptly but then wrapped things up, things I hadn’t seen coming. Thanks to NetGalley for the privilege to read and review this book.
I'm torn on how to rate this book. I really enjoyed the character development in the beginning. Once the plot started chugging along and questions arose as to whether any of the characters were unreliable narrators, my opinion began roller coastering along with the characters. Some I liked, some I saw coming, some left me a little cold. That said, I read this book in two days because I couldn't put it down; I wanted to know where it was going next. I think I would give the book 3.5 stars, but will round up because it captured my attention and that's what I want when I read. I was provided a copy of this book through netgalley for free in exchange for an honest review,
“The Other Couple” is an addictive psychological thriller surrounding four people and how their time together leads to blackmail and murder.
The author knows how to make the characters personal to the reader. She alternates the story between the four perspectives, which keeps the plot fresh. Moreover, I also liked the snippet entries of Brad’s blog and the responses/comments he gets to those posts. While you don’t feel like this is essential initially, the author puts them for a reason, which you realize at the end.
Moreover, the storyline and the characters intrigued me. It was gripping to see how each of the characters reacted to various situations. Poor Maggie! I thought she was the most enigmatic character in the tale. On the one hand, she stresses about her relationship with Brad, and then she also has to deal with Joe and Skye. I also liked the angle of Maggie and Darren.
Similarly, Skye is also strange and intriguing. The author wrote her well because you don’t know what her intentions are. At times, she is indifferent to the character, and sometimes, she is overly friendly with them. At the same time, Joe is one character you love to hate. Brad is the person you feel sorry for in the story, and I felt empathetic towards him.
Furthermore, the author maintains the pacing very nicely, where you don’t know what will happen to the characters. However, there were some minor parts that I felt were a bit off. For instance, why would Maggie and Brad keep Skye even after Joe went missing? They don’t even know her that well and should have suspected something was not right.
But, apart from that, I enjoyed reading this book. Overall, “The Other Couple” is a gripping psychological thriller that I enjoyed reading.
Great book full suspense and drama great author enjoyed very much would recommend to all my my friends and family
Fab thriller that kept me gripped from the start...definitely something I needed to read to get me out of my slump and perfect for cosy nights in
