Even though this book didn't connect with me as much as the other books in the series, I think this will be enjoyed by so many fans of the series. It's fun and gives what the book promises. Also the narrator is fantastic, so the audiobook is the way to go. I will be recommending this to many teens who like fun historical (ish) fiction books.

Thank you NetGalley and Harper Audio for the advanced reading copy of My Contrary Mary by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows. I can't wait to start this book.

This novel takes place in a fictional renaissance France where Mary, Queen of Scots, is betrothed to Francis, Dauphin (next in line to the throne). Mary has the title of Queen of Scotland but has spent most of her life in France waiting to marry Francis. This novel has all the drama of the royal court. There is endless plotting and scheming.

These authors know how to work together into order to create a humours cast of characters filled with subtle pop culture references. If you enjoyed the Jane series or a fictionalized history then this novel is for you.

⛧My Contrary Mary by Hand, Ashton & Meandows - Mannnnn... I am so mad at myself for not reading this sooner. While I'm not the biggest fan of humor/comedy, these books(previous Jane series) are just so great to me.

This audiobook is narrated by Fiona Hardingham

A whimsical version of the story of Queen Mary. Fantasy intertwined with some historical truth. Even though this narration is a galley; the story offers the listener enough to keep their attention and avoid the annoyance of having a true narration. The historical research that the author had to do in order to make those parts seem true to life while swinging to portions of a queen turning into a mouse. I enjoyed this story til the very last sentence.

Mary, Queen of Scots. Mary Stuart. Mary...the Mouse? When you think of Mary, Queen of Scots, you probably don’t think of a shapeshifter, but that’s exactly what this fun, lighthearted take on Mary’s teenage-ish years puts forth. My Contrary Mary tells the tale of betrayal and teenage romance set against a 16th Century background.

This was my first foray into the My Jane/Mary universe and it was not at all what I was expecting! I really enjoyed the humor - especially the breaking the 4th wall kind of comments - and most of the character POVs were fun to read. But honestly, the “mystery” really fell flat for me. It kind of felt like there wasn’t a ton of plot, and left me wishing for a bit more.

However, I definitely enjoyed the writing style enough to make me want to go read some of the My Lady Jane series since I know they are pretty highly regarded! If you’re looking for a quick and easy read that will make you laugh (and maybe pull you out of a series reading slump), My Contrary Mary is a great choice for that!

Read in 2021-Another fun rendition of historical woman and their friends. This book had so many strong female characters that showed amazing character development. This was a light fun read that included lots of magical elements.

Thank you netgalley and the publisher for an arc ebook in exchange for my honest review

Love this title just as much as the rest in the series. A fun and fictional take on history that I will definitely recommend to students.

This was an enjoyable diversion though a bit more of a stretch for this Tudor and Stuart fan than was "My Lady Jane." This new series will work for YA readers who enjoyed the Janies formula.

The Lady Janies have done it again! (Are they the Lady Marys now?) I absolutely love how comical and chaotic they make historical figures out to be. I can’t wait for the next installment.

Not a genre I personally enjoy but I can appreciate the creativity of the story and the importance of the series. I love the gifts on historic female characters with shared first names.

My Contrary Mary is the 1st in a series of books about famous Mary's by the same trio (Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows) that brought the Lady Jane series. These ladies put a fun and funny spin on historical figures. I enjoyed the Jane series very much and the 1st in the Mary book was good as well. This installment is about Mary Queen of Scots. It features intrigue, shapeshifters, treason and conspiracy and Love.

I am a huge fan of My Lady Jane, and was intrigued to see what lies in store for Mary, Queen of Scots! I have to say I was not disappointed! This novel was full of humor and magic in Catherine de Medici’s court. I like how it focused on Francis and Mary. I’m also glad to see Mary become the queen she was meant to be! This, this is given a more happy ending than she was in real life! Overall, I recommend this fans of alternative history! I can’t wait to see what’s in story for the next Mary!

**Thanks NetGalley for the chance to review this complimentary voice galley. These are my honest thoughts on this selection.**

Let's just jump right in! The cover is gorgeous and that was the first thing that caught my attention followed pretty quickly by the title. Once I read the description as a retelling of the story of Mary, Queen of Scots....I was all in. The premise of this book was refreshing and thoroughly enjoyable. I loved that Mary and her friends were shapeshifters and also that 1 of her inner circle happened to be the daughter of Nostradamus.

Even though this copy was not representative of the final audiobook I really enjoyed it and can't wait to add it to my collection!

My Mary Contrary is the story of Mary queen of Scotland. She is betrothed to Francis, heir to the throne of France. And Mary believes she is the rightful heir to the crown of England. Mary is also a mouse. She is a shapeshifter in a world led by Verities, non shapeshifters. Luckily Mary has a lot of support from her ladies in waiting and Francis. King Henry dies and Mary and Francis ascend to the throne and with that comes lots of political trouble, traps, conspiracies and treason, least of which is that if the people of France find out that Mary is a shapeshifter, she could lose her crown and her head.

This book definitely needs to be listened to on audiobook. Fiona Hardingham is a terrific narrator and there are many cheeky asides for the reading ywhich she delivers perfectly. I really felt like I was listening to the TV show Reign with the addition of shapeshifters, I can’t wait until book two in the series comes out and I will also check out the Janes series.

I received this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
