I loved My Lady Jane and My Contrary Mary lives up to all of my expectations. The fantasy elements are well done and its nice to learn more about Eðians and verities as well as prophesies and potions. Mary Queen of Scott's has always been one of my favorite historical figures, and now she's been given the happy ending she always deserved.

It was really hard to connect with this book based on the synthetic voice audio recording. I know I will love and enjoy this book so much more when I get to listen via the final audio!

My Contrary Mary is the first book in an amazing historical fiction trilogy from authors that have taken has managed to take history (and your favorite novel) and flip it on it’s head. This novel tells the tale of Mary, Queen of Scots, during her time in France when she was engaged to marry Francis, heir to the throne of France. In this tale however, Mary is not only Queen of Scotland, but she’s also a shapeshifter, aka a part-time mouse, in a kingdom where being a shapeshifter is cause for death.

To say I loved this book is an understatement. My Contrary Mary is filled with hilarious and snarky commentary that only helps to make the reader more invested in the ever evolving plot. Each character is more entertaining than the last and you never quite know what turn the book will take next. I couldn’t put this book down and I have a feeling other readers will feel the same way.

I am so excited to buy a copy of this book! All of the books in this series are amazing! These authors make the stories and women larger than life and someone girls can look up to.

I love the humour in this book and others in series. Especially the nod to one of my all-time favourites, The Princess Bride! It's a bit of a long story but well-written and flows well so it doesn't seem too long. I listened to the automated narrator from the e-galley audiobook so I'm sure it will be even better with a person narrating!
Thanks so much to #netgalley for the chance to preview #mycontrarymary!

This book is amazing! I loved all of the Lady Janie's series and if you enjoyed those then you will really enjoy this one. This book is funny and has modern references. It is perfect. I think Aristotle is my favorite character because she is so invested in helping her friends and being useful but her predictions are from the modern day so they have no relevance to the story. It is hilarious. I can't wait for the next book in this series.

DNF - not going to rate or review this one as I did not get very far in the book.

I didn't realize that the Jane and Mary series were more fantasy and not really realistic historical fiction. I thought they were historical fiction so was disappointed with the first book in the Mary series. I tried reading Jane series first, but I just could not suspend my belief or get into the writing

I couldn't get into this, it was not what I was expecting. I am sure there is a reader for it but it is not me.

I enjoyed this book, though not as much as the "Jane" books. The character development was pretty good, though some characters had a lot more than others. The plot was okay, but a bit predictable at times. The writing was funny and witty, but not the best I’ve ever read. It will definitely give you some laughs though! It was too slow in some parts and others were full of action, so not great pacing It felt like the ending was rushed. It was somewhat thought-provoking. A few discrimination issues in there. It was definitely entertaining, most of the time. And it was mostly enjoyable.

This book is filled with charming characters. I started reading the book until I realized I would rather listen to the audiobook. I'm so glad I made the transition because I enjoyed the book so much more listening to it. A book this size filled with so many different point of views can feel overwhelming but when you are listening to it everything comes to life. The plot was interesting and kept me engaged the whole way through. I liked that we saw characters from a previous book and got to see what they were up to. I loved the main character and the side characters. They all had depth and their own personalities. One thing that I did not like was all of the references to pop culture. This could have just been a me thing though. I found myself rolling my eyes each time a certain character made a prediction about the future and it ended up being about movie references. I thought it was funny in the beginning but towards the end I felt like it broke my immersion. Overall, this book was enjoyable and I recommend it to anyone who likes strong female characters, history, and magic.

I don't know how they do it!! Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows make history so hilarious and interesting. I didn't realize the audiobook voice in the ARC would be synthesized so that took some getting used to but made some scenes even more funny because of it. This book (and the other series) make me want to look up the real ladies to find out more about who they really were. I love how it showcases strong female historic figures.

Thank you to Harper Audio and NetGalley for the advanced audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows have done it again. I loved their stories about the Janes and was excited to see they were doing the something's with the Mary's. It's a good parody where someone who might not have gotten a happy ending in history gets their happily ever after here. When I got the audiobook I didn't realize the voice was synthesized so that was a little hard to get used to but other wise an enjoyable novel.

Just as funny and enjoyable as the rest of the series! I recommend these for anyone that loves history and also parody!

I have loved every book in this series and I'm sure this one will be no different! Unfortunately, I could not listen to the audiobook. I didn't realize when requesting that it would be robotic and not narrated by a human narrator. I will definitely be preordering so that I can read the rest when it's released.

Thank you #NetGalley and Harper Audio for the audio book ARC in exchange for an honest review.

My Contrary Mary by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows. This novel follows the pattern of the rewritten histories of Jane's. This book is about one of my favorite Mary's, Mary Queen of Scots. The characterization this novel is phenomenal. Mary as a character to fall in love with early on, she is a force to be reckoned. This book allows readers to watch the characters grow throughout the novel dealing with dangers, deception, and love that overcomes evil. If you enjoy historical retellings this book is for you.

This book felt like it was written in hopes of gaining it's own Netflix series. There was so much happening but not necessarily one story arc. I loved Jane Book #1 by the authors, but I feel like since then, there's been a steady decline in the enchantment.

These authors nailed some of the Janes of history, and now it’s time for the Marys.

This book isn’t even out yet and I kind of already want to reread it. Seeing as I am so intrigued by the story of Mary, Queen of Scots (thanks, Reign) I was beyond excited for this and I can say it lived up to my expectations. Mary, Francis, Catherine, Ari, Mary’s ladies-in-waiting (who are all, coincidentally, named Mary) were incredible. I loved this story so much and the characters definitely made it. I also loved revisiting the same world as My Lady Jane with all the people who can shift into animals. I loved the twisted storyline so Mary got a happier ending than history had given her. This book was as hilarious as all the other three, but I think My Calamity Jane holds the top spot for pop culture jokes for me.

The only weird thing about this was that the audiobook was synthetically voiced. It was a tad robotic but I got used to it pretty quickly and none of the jokes got lost!

I was thrilled to see that this author trio was continuing their writing journey together. The Jane trilogy is one of my go-to recommendations in this genre for any reader of any age. I'm so happy to say that My Contrary Mary is in keeping with the humor and flow of the Janes.
Mary, Queen of Scots, is an infamous lady and her life is fascinating. Spanning three countries, the political and religious intrigue follows multiple deaths, marriage proposals, and shapeshifts. This spin on her tale is less morose and filled with quite a bit more hilarity. If only one could transform into an animal at any given moment, more world problems could be solved handily.
I did not realize when I requested this audio, that it was a synthetic narration rather than a narrator. Fiona Hardingham is amazing and I know she will do a great job with this title. I'm disappointed that I didn't hear her voice and inflections, but I suppose a re-listen is in order!
Thank you to Harper Audio and NetGalley for the advanced copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Welcome back to the world of Verities and E∂ians! I was so pleased to receive this title as an arc to review because I absolutely LOVED the Jane series and the authors are at it again with the story of Mary, Queen of Scots....as a mouse. I loved how this story mixes history with fantasy and is both punny and lighthearted. The woldbuilding throughout the Jane series continues in the Mary series with the war between E∂ians and Verities being political and many historical figures having a stake in the game. The character development is superb and I especially loved the relationship between Ari and Liv. The writing is humorous and well done and I really enjoyed this story and cant wait for the next in the series.
