I really enjoyed this book, part poems part life advice. The only funny thing i found was the whole book is abiut being single and not marrying a prince but then the end acknowledges the author lives with their partner.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and will search out the rest in the series. It was a shame it was so short.
I received an early copy of this book from NetGalley.
If you like Amanda Lovelace’s other books of poetry, you’ll like this one as well. It follows the same form of self criticism/self-empowerment that her other books do.
However, it seems to get getting a little repetitive... while I like the message it is giving, I wish it there was more. Does the dense subject matter make up for the limited number of actual poems included in this book? Maybe, maybe not.
The artist included some beautiful double page spreads, but it is the same 2 images repeated through the book. I was hoping to see different images that rephrase hinted at their own story.
Other all, there was nothing I didn’t expect though I was left wanting more (not necessarily in the way the author intended).
3.5/5 rounded up
i’ll always love amanda’s books because of the magical feel of the writing. possibly her most magical book yet.
thank you to the publishers and netgalley to allow me to read an early copy of this!!

Review:
If you have read any of Amanda Lovelace's poetry, you know what you are in for! Shine your Icy Crown is the sequel of Break Your Glass Slipper, second part of the poetry series You are Your own fairytale. This book is a perfect sequel of break your glass slippers, resonating the format of the first book.
Amanda Lovelace returns with her beautiful poetry, heartbreaking silences and amazing verse in her new book. The poetries are heart touching and mesmerizing, many of elements in this book are already familiar with her readers.
If you are a fan of her poetry, you may not be surprised by this book. This book is interesting, but it could not get through me like her earlier poetry collections did.
I love Amanda Lovelace. All her poetry I can relate to. I liked how this was about the bond of sisters, which I have with my own sister. I could see myself gifting her this when it comes out. The artwork was also beautiful.
I enjoyed this second installment of the You Are Your Own Fairy Tale trilogy more than the first one. This one was more general, broader, more widely relatable, and was the most uplifting of any of Lovelace's poetry collections, I felt. It warmed me and some of the poems were exactly what I needed to hear (read) at this time in my life, in our country. I've given 5 stars to several of her poetry collections but this one is 5+.

I've previously read Amanda Lovelace's poetry collection, The Princess Saves Herself in This One, and I wasn't blown away with it. But I decided to give her another chance with her newest collection, and I honestly think that this collection is a step up!
While this collection isn't mind-blowing, I do think the feminist themes shown through very strongly which I loved, and I loved the artwork!!! So many amazing quotes can be pulled from this collection, and if you are a fan of poetry or Lovelace's previous works, I think you should give this one a try!
I've enjoyed Amanda Lovelace's past poetry collections, and I've enjoyed this one too. Personally, I didn't get many new insights from this one so it didn't do as much for me as I would have hoped. But I think this will be very empowering for a younger audience.
I read Break Your Glass Slippers last year and I thought it showed a lot of growth and progress from the Women are Some kind of Magic series (which I loved). And I was excited to see how this new series would develop.
Shine your icy crown was equally as fantastic as the first book in this series. The illustrations were beautiful and fitted with the poetry so well. I was highlighting so many sections of this book, the words flowed off the page so beautifully. I think this series has a softer side to it than the authors previous series but it is no less powerful. Every page is bursting with encouragement and empowerment. I can't wait for the next installment!
Make them rue the day they underestimated you.”
This is a story about not letting society dictate the limits of your potential. it’s time to take back your power & realize that you don’t need a king in order to be a queen.
Shine Your Icy Crown by Amanda Lovelace is a poetry book, told as a story, about society and how it can effect your self-esteem. This story tells you encouraging words on how to say screw society and love yourself.
Society can be very damaging to individuals. You have to look, dress, talk, or act a certain way and if you don't meet up to those certain standards, you're looked down upon.
Shine Your Icy Crown has affected me in so many ways. Let me start off by saying that I struggle with low self-esteem. I am a plus sized diva and I hated myself all of my life. People used to look down at me and called me names. I wasn't even safe in own home because some of my family members used to make fun of me. It was hell growing up!
But, this book made me smile. It made some of my demons and my insecurities go away. I wish that I had this sister who would cheer me up and tell me its okay. I honestly wish this book was published when I wad growing up because I would've felt so much better about myself.
I found so many new quotes that I'm forever going to give to people. Amanda Lovelace did such an amazinh job with this story.
I love reading poetry books and the title itself made me curious about the contents of this one! And boy, I wasn't disappointed! Shine your icy crown is a simple yet Beautiful book, full of short poems which talk about women, their dreams & scars and the way they are treated in the Society. It isn't just a book that must be read by every woman out there but it also should be read by Men to understand alot of things prevalent in the world!
I loved the book thoroughly and found many relatable poems which I even noted down.
Definitely a heart-warming read which needs to be savoured bit by bit.
Thanks to Andrews McMeel and NetGalley for providing me the ARC of Shine Your Icy Crown in exchange for an honest review. It’s out on January 26th!!
She’s always so good at choosing the exact words and capture the raw emotions of women who grew up in a patriarchal society that it’s impossible to not feel understood, seen, and empowered by her poems. There’re lots of parts that I wanna write on mirrors or walls to see those words constantly but I wanna, all the little ones to hear especially the parts titled “big sister says” while they grow up. But not just from their family but from the whole society bcz every single toddler loves themselves and dreams big but somewhere between those times and adolescent years almost everyone stops doing so since they keep hearing they’re not enough, not capable, not whole, etc. Yeah, I know It didn’t come out like a classical review but in short; It’s an awesome poetry collection! Also, Janaina Medeiros’ artworks are gorgeous, too!
I absolutely adored this poetry book and can't wait to get it for my shelves when it comes out.
The prose and illustrations are marvelous and the way the author writes about mental illness, love, heartbreak, family dynamic struggles, and women taking back their power is so thought provoking and powerful.
I decided to read this one because I enjoyed 'The Princess saves herself in this' last year. Sisterhood was appreciated, Stereotypes were heavily criticised and mental health along with other important stuffs was talked about in this poetry collection. And I really appreciate that. The illustrations are aesthetically very pleasing. I loved them. What I didn't like was how it had been approached or portrayed. I felt like some of the poetries reflected anger and arrogance and the usage of words, at some places, made the very essence of 'poetry' gone. But I've seen a lot of people enjoying this kinda poetries that belong to, what people say, independent modern era. So i think this just doesn't meet my expectations or taste in poetry.
As mentioned in the author's note, if these poetries are inspired from the author's life experiences in one way or other, I would say, voicing such courage is worth the appreciation.
Also, I would like to thank NetGalley for providing an advance reading copy in exchange for an honest review.
Poetry isn't something I typically gravitate to, but the simplicity behind Amanda Loveless's work is wonderful. shine your icy crown is a perfect follow up to break your glass slippers. The premise behind this series of deconstructing fairy tale beliefs that modern womanhood continues to uphold is both heartbreaking and powerful. This book is a wonderful mediation or devotional tool; each page holds different interpretations based on the reader's viewpoint.
It's wonderful escapism and powerful introspection at the same time.
Thank you to NetGalley for sending me a free ARC of Shine your Icy Crown in exchange for an honest review!
"women can't rule/they're far too emotional/but isn't it about time/someone actually cared?"
The works of Amanda Lovelace are a national treasure. Lovelace says everything a woman in America wants to say but can't find the words to express. Through elegant and eloquent poetry, the classic dream of being the hero or heroine of our own fairy tales is accomplished. I highly recommend all of Lovelace's works for any reader who loves fairy tales and feminism.
Gorgeous, empowering, and relatable, this is my favorite from this poet so far!
Poetry is something I have to convince myself to read more of, it isn’t the format I tend to pick up easiest. Lovelace’s feminist, relatable, easy to pick up poems are some of my favorites, and this installment did not let me down.
This was the most relatable so far, as I’m dealing with anxiety and depression, and I kept pausing to read one aloud or to just sit with one.
And the art...it’s magical and gorgeous and I loved every bit of it.
I always jump at the chance to read these poetry collections on NetGalley because I love anything with a fairytale element in it and I'm always trying to find a poetry collection I love. I will always love these collections for how they weave modern feminism and classic fairytales together. Shine your icy crown felt very much like an older, wiser sister was giving advice and because of this, I think this collection would have been something my younger self might have appreciated. I think I was expecting a bit more fairytale elements, specific relating to the ice queen story, woven into the poetry. Yes, there were drawings of icy crowns every couple pages and mentions of fridgity but I think I was expecting more.
I enjoyed this book a lot more than the other book I read by Lovelace. I liked how the author listed the trigger topics that were in the book in case people some readers need to be able to prepare themselves to approach certain topics. Overall, this was a very quick read.
I picked up this book because I remember reading ‘The Princess Saves Herself in This One’ a few years ago. I remember quite enjoying it back then. I suppose my taste for poetry changed a lot during those past three years, because I definitely don’t feel the same about this one now. Or the poems have got worse.
Some poems read like Tumblr posts to me. Some posts I would reblog with the tag ‘mood’. They are relatable and younger girls need the affirmations ‘the big sister’ is sharing. I think this would work great like social media posts on Tumblr or Instagram where it would get mixed with your feed, you would read it, think ‘cool’, give it a like and then forget about it. Stumble upon a different poem (post) two days later and repeat the cycle. It just does not have a poetry book potential for me.
The illustrations were great, though.
Thank you NetGalley for providing me with this copy!
