This book was so interesting! It takes place on the trails and in a Clinic on the Trails. Abby our main character is a new doctor at the Trails Clinic. I'd say its part drama like the show ER was, a lot of adventure, thrown with some mystery and suspense. I really enjoyed it! Check it out for an engaging read!
A drama with a minimal suspense. The story was lacking in both and fell flat for me. Character building was detailed and had you invested whether they were likable or not. I couldn’t connect with the main character. For being a very smart doctor she was portrayed as weak with an anxiety problem. Her day dreaming and constant thinking about the universe to calm herself got redundant and lost me. The writing was good with beautifully detailed descriptions of the Canyon and its associated trails. I couldn’t wait to get this one behind me. Not a fan.
"...time never stops...everything keeps moving and changing. Just like each of us."
I really enjoy this series featuring family practice physician, Dr. Abby Wilmore, and her partner and lover, Dr. John Pepper. The pair staff a clinic in the Grand Canyon National Park and much of the novel is about the different ailments and health issues faced by residents and visitors to the area. This particular book focuses on hikers experiencing a wave of serious heart attacks as the result of taking an illicit and potent combination of performance-enhancing drugs including steroids and amphetamines. There are also other dramas involving colleagues, friends, and family as the seasons change and other challenges come up. NO SPOILERS.
As an RN and daughter of a family practice physician, I was immediately thoroughly enchanted by the details of the clinic and the many different aspects of patient problems and treatment. I also love how the author weaves in so much description of the canyon itself and about astronomy, volcanoes, climate, and the difficulty of providing medial care in this sort of environment. The characters are complex, rich in personality, and it's been fun to see them develop and become alive on the pages. I've read all three installments now and can't wait for a 4th.

I haven't read any books in this series and was really excited to read this one! Dr. Abby Wilmore works with her boyfriend Dr. Pepper at a medical clinic set in Grand Canyon National Park. They see all sorts of patients and are always busy. Things start to change quickly when a number of healthy hikers are brought to the clinic with heart attacks. There are rumors about a man selling performance-enhancing supplements to hikers, but the description doesn't match anyone in the area. The search is on and many people in the town, including Dr. Wilmore and Dr. Pepper, are trying to understand what is going on.
I loved that I didn't have to read any other books in the series to understand this book. I liked the characters, setting, and the overall mysterious supplement storyline, but I thought the book focused too much on Dr. Willmore's patients and personal life. I would have liked to have more of the mystery in the storyline. It was still a nice read! Thank you, Netgalley
This is the first book I've read by Miller and I so enjoyed it that I will go back and read the others. she does a great job of capturing the beauty of the Grand Canyon and the strange array of locals who live there. Abby and Pepper are great characters and Pepper's niece Maddie is fresh and fierce. Good plot, fun read.
I love the Dr Abby Wilmore series by Sandra Cavallo Miller. In What the River Said, Abby has returned to her position in the clinic at Grand Canyon and her lover Dr. John Pepper, ready to treat minor and major ailments. Abby still struggles with anxiety, but has achieved peace with her decisions and has collected a group of good friends. In the latest, Abby and John deal with hikers who are overdosing on questionable vitamins, a missing woman, and John's teenage niece. These books have a comforting rhythm that evoke the natural beauty of their setting and I find them eminently re-readable. Highly recommended.
