I received an advance copy in exchange for my honest thoughts and opinions.
I was already a huge fan of Byrne's, she's very talented and is the author of some of my very favorite historical romances. That said, there have still been some misses, where a main character was just *too* much of an ass, or made *too* many terrible decisions, and it brought her writing down to 3 stars. (Which still isn't all that bad for an off book). This is not one of those! I enjoyed the whole thing. It started out compelling from the first, and quickly became incredibly endearing as well. I was invested, and honestly just revelled in it. At not a single point did I think that maybe it was slipping into even 4 star territory. It was just a solid 5 the whole way through.
I had read the previous book when it came out not that long ago, but after reading the first chapter of this, which picks up right where the other left off, I decided I wanted the prior events refreshed in my mind. This book does end up doing a pretty good job filling in for it, but I'm still glad that I went back and reread it. So technically this could stand on its own, but it is better having read the first book (and best having already read the entire Victorian Rebels series as well. Lots of the characters show up in this one, and events are rehashed that would be definite spoilers for those books. So that could be a slight drawback if you haven't already read them.) They build on each other well though, if you like reading series in order.
I am wary sometimes of second chance romances, especially with a long gap between. Too often they were broken up over something ridiculous or stupid, and often they just fritter away the time drowning their sorrows and becoming jaded or something and it just feels like so much waste. This didn't have that problem.
This was riddled with aspects I like in HR- doctors, widdows, class differences, sweethearts, tending the ill or injured, abuse survivors, sacrificing for love... All of it reeled me in. Thankfully I started it early enough I got to bed only a little later than usual, but I am absolutely confident that I would have stayed up 'til 4 in the morning if it had been necessary to finish. =D
I've been counting down to this book, and I would have had a fleeting feeling of contentment before I started champing at the bit to read the next one, *except* the first few chapters of the next book were included at the back as a teaser(!), so now I've gone straight into longing to read it already! Bah! I knew that would be the case when I started them, but I just couldn't stop myself! lol.
Trigger warnings for violence and abuse (mostly hearing about it past tense). Darker themes, cursing, etc. But if those aren't deal breakers for you, I highly recommend the Victorian Rebels and Goode Girls series! They are dark, and compelling, and feature some *outstanding* love stories!
This cute short novella was a quick fun read. It was a little bit all over the timeline and I admit I’m not really a fan of the flashback scenes. Titus and Honoria’s story was nice, maybe a little cliché, but in a good way. Sometimes I really wanted to shake Nora, but I understood where she was coming from.
3.5 stars
A new Bryne always makes me happy and I have been eager to read Honoria and Titus story since I read Prue’s. This was mainly because Honoria was not my favorite person in the former book, but by the ending had redeemed herself and I was excited to read her story to her HEA.
I enjoyed the timeline of the book – it was split into a “before” and “present”. I think the “before” was my favorite part. I enjoyed reading about a young Titus and his devotion, Nora’s developing feelings and eventually their love story before it all went pear shaped.
My main issue (not a bad one) is that the book felt a tad too short! And therefore, in the present when they got together it felt like the timeline had been truncated and not filled with the epic romantic angst I have come to expect from the author. Again, this is a minor complaint as I ultimately enjoyed the story.
I am so looking forward to the Twins stories and how they tame their “Beasts”.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
I haven't read any of the previous books in this series so I had no preconceived notion of who Nora was before. This book starts out with a bang--literally with Nora dying from a gunshot wound from her husband. What a way to keep the reader engaged!
I felt so bad for Nora. She was selfless with her actions regarding Titus although Titus never knew why Nora pushed him away. Nora's father was a piece of work--hated him from beginning to end. Although the book mostly focuses on Nora, Ms. Byrne teasing out the back story for how Titus became the esteemed doctor he was. There were lots of twists and turns in this book and the ending was a surprise--not the HEA but how Nora and Titus finally got the chance to be together despite dark forces keeping them apart. I can't wait to read Mercy and Felicity's story. Those two are a hoot!
Titus Conleith, once a stableboy and then a battlefield surgeon, has risen to great success yet he has never been able to shake the intensity of his feelings for Honoria Goode. She abandoned him, for a more favourable match yet the reality is that she saved him from ruin at the hand of her father. Since then, she has been trapped in a loveless marriage to a cruel madman. When they next meet, Honoria is fighting for her life and Titus, is the one destined to save her.
Whilst part of a series, this is a standalone novel. I am a huge fan of Kerrigan Byrne and this book, is another excellent book in the series. The complexity of her characters, given their past, always makes for a fascinating read. Their pasts are what make these characters who they are. There was never a dull moment in this book and so the only flaw is that the story was not long enough!!
I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
4 1/2 stars. Kerrigan Byrne is one of the very few authors that I buy no matter what they write. I know each time it is going to be a book I enjoy with characters that are so well written with just the right amount of angst, fun, and romance. Courting Trouble is part of the Goode girls series. We first meet Honoria in the last book in the series and I didn't care for her in that one, which goes to prove my point about this authors writing, that Honoria was redeemed in my eyes. Her and Titus's story went from sweet to heartbreaking and back again.. Such a wonderful couple. I cant wait to read more in the series. This book ended with a set up for the next book and I can tell its going to be Goode!
Loved reading Titus and Nora’s story! The author seamlessly took us back into the history of the couple which wAs an important part of the story. I wasn’t sure that I would like Nora after reading the first book of the series, but this book explains what happened and her reasoning, so she was redeemed. And the descriptions of Titus were just yummy! I could really see this man in my mind. 5 stars.
4.5 stars.
This is the second book in the Goode Girls series and it does not disappoint. As the young daughter of a Baron, Nora fell in love with the boy who worked in her family home. Years after they are torn apart and Nora marries a psychopath who attempts to kill her, she and Titus reunites as he is the surgeon who saves her life.
I have to say that after reading the first book in this series I was prepared to hate this heroine, and I shockingly did not. She is not your typical heroine. She was unfaithful in her marriage and took numerous lovers. This book is her story and how sometimes healing yourself after trauma and abuse isn't a pretty picture and I ended up really adoring her and Titus.
I absolutely recommend this book, especially if they love second chance trope, a damaged heroine, a hero devoted to the heroine and lots of angst. I'm not normally a fan of the nobleman's daughter falling for someone so far below her station, but this book is so well written that I adored it. I am definitely interested to read the rest of the series and see how Nora and Titus are doing in the future.
I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.
Titus has worked himself up as a young coal boy to a surgeon. He has never forgotten Honoria the daughter of the family he served. He saves Honoria’s life several times. Honoria is recovering from the death of her abusive husband and is not as willing to trust. Can she finally accept Titus’ love? I can’t wait to read the next in the series! I received an ARC from NetGalley and Oliver Heber Books for my honest review.
4.5 ⭐️ Honoria (Nora) was shot by her psychotic husband at the end of the last book. We learned she had a miserable marriage and was treated horribly. Her only true experience with love was as a young girl with Titus. Unfortunately, they didn’t get there happy ever after. She married another and Titus went on to become a surgeon. They reconnect when Nora is brought to Titus bleeding to death. They have to find ways to make peace with the past and forgive. It’s a road filled with intense passion, danger and hurdles. I read this story so fast. I am not a fan of a lot of secret holding and delaying of the truth. I felt things were revealed fairly quickly and the story was focused on reconnecting. Definitely lots of angst in this one too!
I loved everyone of Kerrigan Byrne’s Victorian Rebels. This new series is a spin off and includes the old group. I really enjoyed this story and enjoyed the epilogue. It definitely left me craving several stories that were set up.
I have heard so many wonderful things about Kerrigan Byrne’s books! Man, was I not disappointed! This is a second chance of a historical romance between Honoria (Nora) Goode, a viscount, and Titus Conleith, formerly the Goode’s stableboy who is a battlefield surgeon. Titus has been in love with Nora since he was 10. Eventually, they end up in a forbidden 3-month affair that ends when her father threatens and demands that she breaks things off with him. Flash forwards a decade later, and they met again, only this time Nora is on her death bed, and Titus is operating on her! The truth is slowly revealed as Nora and Titus unpack their past relationship and lingering feelings. It is a story of forgiveness, hope, and ultimately the pursuit of love in the face of everything.
I did not expect to feel so emotional after reading this book. The pacing of this book was perfect and kept me entertained and thoroughly enthralled the entire time. The writing is beautiful, and I really felt the tug and pull of Nora and Titus's relationship. I’m not a huge fan of the manor's daughter falls in love with the stableboy trope, but this book did it for me. I think it was the constant pain that I felt for Titus and Nora. They both love each other so much, but their timing is always off. He is deeply devoted, loyal, and in love with Nora. There is SOO much longing from both Titus and Nora. Nora is broken, and her self-esteem is low. She carries a lot of shame and guilt from her past, which shapes many of her decisions. Nora represents the standard broken hero archetype, and Titus embodies the typical heroine archetype. I really enjoyed watching Nora’s character develop. She has been under the thumb of such oppressive men, her father and ex-husband, so watching her get her happy ending was everything!! I can’t wait to read Mercy and Felicity's story!! They were so many good side characters in the book, and I am excited to see them in future books.
I permanently had a heartache throughout this book. 10/10 recommended if you're looking for a second chance romance with a broken heroine and a devoted hero with tons of longing and angst.
"*Thank you to NetGalley for an eARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.*
I have read three Kerrigan Byrne books this week and if I could have read more, I would have. If you’ve never read Byrne, you’re missing out. She writes amazing dark historical romances that are so compelling and gritty. But read them in order. Trust me.

The Goode Sisters series is a spin off of The Victorian Rebels series and a few of my favorite characters make an appearance in this book!!! I was extremely excited to see them again. Who doesn’t want a pirate, a cop, and the lord of the London underworld to be your buddies!? I mean, it’ll make life more interesting, no?

Courting Trouble gave me major Again The Magic feels but much darker. And you can snag a copy on the 8th. Have your preorders ready because you’re going to want to read this as soon as it drops.
I was not expecting very much out of this book, since I did not like Nora in the previous book, but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed myself in the end.
In Courting Trouble we have a second chance romance between Nora and Titus. The reason they became separate in the past was very predictable, and I am sure I read the same thing in a lot of historical romances. But I was okay with that because the way the book moves forward with the interactions between them was amazing.
Nora was not a character I was expecting much of, but I was intrigued by the rake being a woman in this book. I liked her in the end, but she was not one of my favorites. She was easily manipulated her whole life by her father that I felt as If she would never get over it at some point. But she does, eventually. She loves Titus, but she tries to make a lot of decisions for him instead of communicating with him. But she loves her family, and she will do anything to protect them.
Titus, on the other hand, is so passionate about what he does, and he never stopped loving Nora. He was one of the sweetest male characters I have ever read from Kerrigan Byrne, and I was in love with him.
I will continue with the series, the end got me very intrigued about the fate of the next Good Girls.
This is an emotional second-chance-romance set in Victorian England. Nora and Titus both have appeared in previous books by Kerrigan Byrne but you do not have to have read these books to enjoy this book.
I was initially unsure if I would be able to root for Nora, she was not the nicest person in the previous book, but with the reveal of her backstory and motivations, it becomes impossible not to root for her happy ending. Nora is a Lady and the daughter of a Lord more focused on social climbing and making money then on his own daughter's happiness. When she is younger, she briefly finds love with Titus, a servant on her father's estate and aspiring doctor, before she makes a decision that destroys it. Years later, she is shot saving her sister from from her own evil husband, who is then killed. Widowed and injured, she is brought to Titus who saves her. As her injury heals, they both begin to untangle the past and to work toward finding their much delayed happily ever after.
Honoria (Nora) Goode and Titus Conleith's story is not a new one: Young lovers from different classes are cruelly separated, and one's lie--told to protect the other--leads to feelings of anger and betrayal. What was different about this novel for me was the characters themselves. Honoria--a baron's daughter--has very human flaws and has suffered in the decade she's spent apart from Titus.Titus, who was orphaned at a young age and was thus living as a servant in the baron's home, had no less of an interesting life. Early on, an encounter with the Goode family's physician led him into a brilliant and successful career as a surgeon.
The story begins somewhat in the middle or a larger story arc.The first book in this series (Nora's sister's story) apparently ended with a cliffhanger that this book starts with: Nora lying on a warehouse floor, bleeding out from a gunshot wound, and Titus is brought in to save her. The book then jumps back in time to when out heroes met. This part spans several chapters but doesn't overpower the rest of the tale, which is largely Nora and Titus finding their way back to each other.
The story is quite short, though it's longer then a novella. I wouldn't have minded a longer story. Perhaps if I'd read the first book or the preceding series, I wouldn't feel the loss as much. That said, it was a fast and fun read for me. Courting Trouble was my first book by Kerrigan Byrne, but it won't be my last.
I received an ARC of this story from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion. Thanks!
A book from Kerrigan Byrne is always a special treat. This one was a particularly lovely surprise. I'm not a fan of the reunited lovers trope, especially with the added widow part, but nothing is ever a trope with this author and I was foolish to have ever considered it would be. Every moment of the book is its unique own story unlike anything you have read before, comparable only to another one of her books.
The story is seemlessly woven together moving from the ending moments of the book before to their history and back to the present within a few chapters. Unlike other stories I have read that include the backstory, only the key moments were included and they were written with just as much depth and passion as the story still to unfold.
In a unique twist, Titus is presented in the traditional role of besotted, but betrayed heroine who needs to be wooed and saved. Nora is the heartless, misunderstood "rake" who must claim his love. But there is never a moment when you don't know they are meant for each other. Fortunately, her sisters play an excellent supporting role and help her navigate through this difficult time. I look forward to reading their stories.
If you have never had the pleasure of reading a book by Kerrigan Byrne, you can start here, but you won't enjoy the preceding book as well if you know the outcome of the mystery. And you will definitely want to read that one and every other book she has written. You should probably just start from the beginning with The Highwayman, but, if you can't wait that long to get to the Goode girls, go ahead and jump in here.
I liked this book. I loved the phasing and the characters. For a book filled with so much detail it didn’t drag and went quick.I loved the 2 gangsters and hope they will continue to be part of the series .I liked the reference to grand gestures .
What a wonderful second chance historical romance, with a splash of danger and mystery, and a lovely extended cast of characters. I couldn’t put it down once I started it, eager to see how the story will unfold. Loved the change of pace as Titus as a physician, not common in the historical romance I’ve read and for a great story. Can’t wait for the next book in the series!
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Courting Trouble is the second book in the Goode Girls series and it features an angsty second chance romance between two lovers who were torn apart because of their difference in social class. The author quickly summarizes the events from the first book Seducing a Stranger/A Dark and Stormy Knight during the prologue. If you've read Morley's book, then the prologue will act as a quick refresher. If you're new to Kerrigan Byrne, you will get a short breakdown of the events that unfolded in the first book. But keep in mind that the events from the first book heavily influence the turn of events in Courting Trouble. Furthermore, the prologue might be an information overload if you didn't read Seducing a Stranger/A Dark and Stormy Knight.
When it comes to second chance romance, I typically enjoy this trope the most in historical romance. I can't really explain why...but historical romance writers really do this trope justice. And if there's one thing that Kerrigan Byrne does best, it's a second chance romance involving two people who loved each other when they were younger. Titus Conleith used to work for the Goode family and he fell in love with Honoria, the eldest Goode sister, at first sight. It's not until they were young adults that Nora noticed Titus. But when Nora's dad finds out about their affair, the two young lovers are torn apart.
Now almost a decade later, Nora has been shot and the doctor who is operating on her is none other than Titus himself. After Nora wakes up, things are formal, stiff, and a bit awkward between her and Titus. There is a lot of unresolved tension between them and the angst is quite delicious. I really enjoyed the pivotal scene where the barriers are down and Titus and Nora finally talk things out. My absolute favourite part of this book though is the flashback chapters when Titus and Nora were younger. These chapters really solidified their love for each other and man, I just LOVE Titus so damn much. I think this is the closest Kerrigan Byrne has come to writing a gamma hero.
I do think that Nora treated Titus unfairly the second time around. She refused to even consider alternative solutions with Titus and while I do understand her motivations, her actions still bugged me. The climax is a bit cheesy and dramatic, but it gives Titus and Nora that final push. The climax also introduces two anti-heroes who will obviously get their own stories. At least, I hope they will lol. I read a teaser for the next book and I am SO EXCITED for it now!!! Based on the teaser that I read, I noticed that the Goodreads synopsis for Dancing with Danger is incorrect, but the Amazon one seems to be correct. I have my own thoughts on who I want Felicity to end up with...and I hope I am right lol.
4.5
Another incredible read by Mrs. Byrne. I was intrigued by Honoria ever since Seducing A Stranger/ A Dark and Stormy Knight, because, while she didn't come off as the best of characters, there was something in the way she was portrayal that had me interested in reading her story. And I was not disappointed.
After being shot be her psychotic and abusive husband, Honoria 'Nora' Goode is all but bleeding out when she hears a name... the name of the boy whose heart she broke, the only man she ever loved, the one she begs to see with the last of her strength.
After dealing with tragedy at a young age, spending his youth working as a stable/house boy to put over his head and working tirelessly as an adult, Titus Conleith is now one of the most celebrated doctors in London. But what he could never have imagined is seeing the woman who ripped out his heart shot and bleeding on his operation table.
I loved the depth this story had, the history between Nora and Titus, the love they had for each other and how they found their way back to each other overcoming insecurities and obstacles through communication, maturity and personal growth. I love how Nora comes into her own. She was so selfless, sacrificing everything for those she loves but more so I love how she finally gets her HEA with Titus.
While this story was a little shorter than Kerrigan's other works, it was wonderful all the same. Exceptionally well written, a captivating storyline filled with angst and love and just an all round great addition to the Goode Girls Series. I cannot wait for the rest of the books in the series, of which there will be 8 *celebrates*, particularly Mercy and Felicity's books, especially after that sneak peek for Dancing With Danger.
Thank you Netgalley and Oliver Herber Books for the ARC.
