I enjoyed this book from start to finish. Lisa explains Bible verses in such a down-to-earth way, it was almost as if we were having a conversation face to face. I also really liked the questions that are asked the end of each day. They truly help process what you read and also think more about yourself. This book was the first I have read of Lisa's and I can't wait to read more of hers.
Thank you to B&H Publishing Group, Netgalley, and Lisa Harper for my advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
The book read well and flowed smoothly.
I think that Lisa Harper does a good job hitting the high points and building out examples that back up her points and ideas. She is a great story-teller and writes in a way that makes you feel like an old friend listening in.
Loved this book! Used it as my devotional and it has some great wisdom. Perfect tidbits for my day.
Thanks to author, publisher and NetGalley for the chance to read this book.. While I got the book for free, it had no bearing on the rating I gave it.
I love Lisa Harper. She has been at my church a few times and she always puts me in a good mood. I really enjoyed this devotional because it took her good humor along with scripture and everyday trials into each day. Highly recommended!
Side note for NetGalley. This book was terrible trying to read. If it was on the app it was so small and hard to read. If you made it bigger you had to constantly move the page. If you read it on kindle the days are not clearly marked.
This is one of the best devotional I have read in a long time. I know many people may find it too casual, I found it refreshing, relatable, and theologically sound. Lisa’s writing and speaking style are one of my favorites. She’s funny but drives the point home while holding your attention, which I appreciate. I read the devotions pretty quickly, so I didn’t get a chance to savor the questions at the end of each one, so I plan to go through it again.
I love how honest and relatable the stories are in this devotional. It feels like chatting with a friend, while also delivering important truths.
Even though I didn't read this as a daily devotional, but instead, read it all in a week or so, for the purpose of reviewing it, I really enjoyed it! In fact, I plan to go back and read it more slowly, as a daily thing, in order to get more out of it. I appreciate Lisa's humor, and the fact that she spends much time in Bible study, and theological study. And she does what she can to pass what she has learned on to others. Even if you don't agree with her on every single point, theologically, you can still learn from this devotional! I love the questions at the end of each devotion for practical application. And the cover--I love the pinkness--and the fact that it's not your boring old nonfiction book cover!!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to have this advance copy for review! All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
“Life” is a sit down with your best friend, get real and let it all out kind of devotional. This book is for those days when you just don’t feel perfect, but need someone to remind you that God loves us no matter our attitude, and He can make it better if we stop and look around. A great reminder that He enjoys us being happy and also to be real with Him. Lisa Harper writes in such a way that you feel okay being yourself and know that you are accepted. Her stories are hilarious, heartfelt and down to earth. The Bible stories she tells are easy to understand and full of fun facts. The follow up questions feel like a friend asking instead of a stressful test. I will be re-reading this book as a daily devotional for a daily uplift! I cannot say enough about how great this book is! (I received an advanced copy of this book for my honest review. Thank you B&H Books!)
I absolutely LOVE Lisa Harper, so this devotional was a joy to read. I'm not usually a devotional person, but I requested it with Netgalley just so I could read a book by her! Her mixture of humor, relatability and vulnerability make her both a joy to listen to and learn from. She has just the right way of bringing you in with laughter to gut you with a moving point masterfully.
With that said, this study isn't a deep as I usually like to go in my personal studies. I like books that dig deep into the Word and pull out those truths. And while Harper does pull out truths from the Word, she tends to lean on stories more than digging into the depths of the Bible. That's just her style though, and I personally don't think there's anything wrong with it! But I do think that I might prefer her teaching over her writing (for me) because of it. Also there just is something about her delivery as a teacher that maybe doesn't come through entirely on the page.
Life by Lisa Harper is a wonderful devotional. Being a new fan of Ms. Harper's I was excited when I found out about this lovely devotional. Ms. Harper gives us 100 devotionals inspired by her events and lessons from her life. Each devotion is accessible, applicable, thought-provoking, and gives the chance to have a stronger relationship with Christ. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to strengthen their relationship with Christ. I really enjoyed this book and it really ministered to me while reading it. I am looking forward to Lisa Harper's next book. Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read it. (This review is also on GoodReads.)
This is the perfect devotional book. ! It’s light and easy to read and so funny and relatable all the while including scripture references and questions that help you to apply the story of the day as well as the scripture. The stories are fun to read and I think this would be a fun book to do as a group because most women can relate to dealing with the issues presented in the various scenarios presented every day. Would definitely recommend!
This book takes an empathetic approach and gives bite size approaches and allows you to have kindness and patience with yourself when dealing with life. This is so necessary for everyone to read in life. Highly recommend. Especially loved the reflection to true life to humanize my feelings and relate. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I love Lisa Harper! Her humor! How real she is! Her heart! Her love for Jesus! I want to take my time reading back over this devotional for the next 100 days but wanted to get this review out! Each day has scripture, a reflection from Lisa ( some funny, some serious but all relatable) and 3 reflection questions at the end.
I had the privilege of meeting Lisa Harper at a our Annual Women’s Conference where she was the speaker in 2013. She is a great speaker!
I received a complimentary ARC of this book from NetGalley on behalf of the Publisher and was under no obligation to post a favorable review.
I enjoy reading devotionals, but found the writing style of this devotional a bit too casual for my tastes. It made it hard to take the devotionals as prayer because it was written with so many asides and interjections by the author.
