A very different story line set in an era when stories were wild, bloody and deadly. Built around rumors of a shipwreck buried in the desert loaded with treasure, of course, there are many ruthless searchers. Another twist finds the main characters include many women. Written by an author with true western blood lines, THIS SIDE OF HELL was both a great western and a very entertaining change of pace.
This was an interesting western with some real people in history. This book centers on searching for buried treasure and starts out with a dramatic scene. It was a little long and wish there was more about intro and ending instead of looking back. Most characters were interesting.
This Side Of Hell, by Brett Cogburn was an interesting western tale of historical fiction with some real people of past history.
Centering around the search for buried treasure on the dry seabed sands of the desert, it’s an unfriendly race to find the lost ship with a treasure (if there truly is a lost ship) fueled by greed, with the forming of alliances that no one is sure if they can completely trust
The book starts out interesting enough with a very dramatic scene, then goes to backstory.... 6 Days earlier, and picks up from there. It was like hills and valleys of interest, and at 400 pgs, I wish there would have been less time in reflection leading up to the story, and more time at the story’s introduction and ending. The most interesting characters I found to be were Newt, Poker Annie, and Mr. Smith.
What I really enjoyed was the author’s historical notes at the book’s end. Very enlightening and informative.
All in all, a good read.
