Jake Parker is still struggling with the past and when he is send on a mission to Puerto Rico, this might also be a good time to clear his head and think about where his future lies.
His task is to assist, but Jake would not be Jake if this is all he would take on.
He is a force to be reckoned with. He has of course a past that helps him to see through the traitors and track them down to put a stop to their actions.
He is the shining star in this action packed book finding himself surrounded by enemies. Jake is not one to be put out by this and he keeps on digging until he finds out the truth behind all the scheming.
While bullets fly left, right and center, I was dragged into this intriguing story whilst ducking behind the sofa to avoid being hit. ;). That's how real it all felt. I liked the web of corruption and deceit Jake uncovered and was shock by how deceitful some people can be not caring who they hurt in the process. 5 stars
Thank you
If I had to pick one, and only one, genre to read, it would be a very hard decision. But one of the contenders would definitely be mystery/thrillers and Nick Thacker's books would be high up on that list. This is the 2nd book in the Jake Parker series, but it is also a very good stand alone. I'd just point out that you'd miss a very good 1st in a series were you not to read CONTAINMENT. Thacker's characters become real quickly. Compare them to Jack Reacher or Jack Ryan. This book will definitely keep you reading and shushing everyone else in the house. I can definitely say that Jake Parker is on my "click" list. Don't bother reading the synopsis, just click and add it to your library.
Exciting thriller with an unexpected ending.
This is not my normal read but enjoyed it as a bit of escapism, as a lot of it seemed unrealistic.
Jake Parker doesn’t come across as a particularly likeable character so I didn’t feel invested in what became of him.
It does show the difference between life in Puerto Rico and the US.
If you like politics, mafia, big business and a bit of a romp then this book is for you.
Thanks to Netgalley for allowing me to read this book in return for a fair review.

Suspenseful, gripping and full of interesting twists, this story kept me invested from the beginning to the last page. There are so many interesting moments of intertwined political acts with puertorriqueño mafia and our main character, Jake is in for a ride of a lifetime. His devotion for his country is in balance with his vengeance hunger and how he decided to play his part in this secret service job, will unfold what kind of a character he is and why I am so intrigued to read the next books in the series because it left me wanting more.
4.5 stars
Patriot' by Nick Thacker is the second book in the Jake Parker Series. It is a book that you can read without first reading 'The Containment', the first book, but I can say that once you have read this one you will want to go back to the first, they are THAT good.
An action packed thriller that picks up shortly after book one ends. This time Jake is recruited for a job in Puerto Rico which, as always, is not one to shout from the rooftops. While on this mission he realises that revenge for his wife's death may be within reach and now, for Jake it has turned personal. He starts to put his plan into action but then at the same time he finds out that there is a larger agenda going on. One that threatens American citizens and Jake knows he needs to take this down, but also realises that he will be unable to exact his revenge. Will he be able to walk away from his main mission in life to save innocents?
Well, another Jake Parker novel makes for another tense and explosive read for me! Jake is a great main protagenist and he is so real, with his need for revenge and his loyalty to his country tearing him apart we see him going through the mill again. I was delighted when I saw this book being published and knew I needed to be on the tour again.
Plenty of mystery, action, twists and breath stopping moments made for an edge of my seat read that I couldn't put down! If I didn't have my kindle at hand I was on my kindle app on my phone just so I could know what would happen next. Great follow up to 'The Containment'. Can't wait for the third book now.
Thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for the copy of the book for my review today.
I'm going to be the odd one out here because I just couldn't connect to this book. I so wanted to love it and the reviews were very good but sadly it just didn't do it for me. I felt indifferent towards the main character and found him a bit shallow at times. I still pushed through because I hate giving up on a book but it was definitely not 1 of my best reads.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion
“I can help you find the man who killed your wife.”
Jake Parker sets a storming pace in this, his second adventure and hits the ground running, this time in the drug fuelled, gangland swamp, of a hot and sultry Puerto Rico.
This stand alone story got off to a strong start with that single opening line; the inevitable action packed plot kicked in and never let me out of its clutches for a second; the ending which looked as though it was going to tie things up nicely and did – almost, then threw in a totally unexpected curved ball, which will inevitably make me come back for more when book #3 comes along. Oh! and Jake almost broke the fourth of my rules for a good book ‘you can’t be dead’!
The chapters were short and punchy, no wasted words or sentiment for this investigator, as actions definitely speak louder. However, far from disrupting the flow of the story, these breaks only served to heighten the tension, so there was a little time to digest the powerful narrative and dialogue, as I tried to keep up with the pace of the fast moving action and ever changing landscape of events. Author Nick Thacker, also took me on a tumultuous, whistle-stop tour, of some of the less salubrious, definitely non-tourist districts of Puerto Rico, in a one-of-a-kind experience. Great for an armchair traveller such as myself!
Jake is despatched on his ‘consultative’ mission by an old friend in the US, however knowing how desperate Jake is to uncover some of the lesser known facts about Mel’s death, which might ultimately afford him an inner peace with himself, McDonnell sets him away with the codicil that “I can help you find the man who killed your wife”, thus setting the scene for this multi-layered and complex chain of events, where nothing and no one are what they at first appear to be, and are definitely not to be taken at face value. Double-cross and double-double-cross, come as naturally as breathing to people on both sides, who are used to living and surviving on the edge. This intense and textured storyline, so skilfully choreographed by an author totally at ease with his cast of characters and chain of events, has the air crackling with tension, full of sadness and even with a little glimpse of heart and humour, as and when each is required.
Gangland life, love and ultimately often death, is the very air that they breathe, for many on both the margins of this society and also inside the upper echelons of several of the country’s largest business corporations, so I just knew that the outcomes were not going to be good, especially when the very lives of a US population the drug companies are purportedly helping to save, are in fact going to be made much worse, as part of their internal struggles for success and domination. Some of the ‘B’ list characters are I suspect, deliberately kept in the shadows and are, by default, sketchy in detail. However all of the star cast is well defined and developed, albeit in a disparate, distant, and pretty much dislikeable way, making me totally unable to connect or invest in any of them )including the seductive Veronique), except for Jake of course! But I’m certain that is exactly what the author had in mind for me all along.
After first becoming acquainted with Jake during his first case Containment, I had high hopes that his broken heart might have begun the healing process, when he teamed up with Eliza to solve the crime and bring the perpetrators to justice. However, I obviously misjudged just how badly damaged and broken both of them were, as it seems as though rather than growing closer, they are now pulling away from each other, maybe in fear of that ultimate commitment, or maybe because Jake has yet to draw a tangible line under his marriage, which ended so finally and devastatingly. Puerto Rico offers Jake another bite at the happiness cherry, but can the resourceful and strong-willed, Veronique succeed where Eliza is failing, or is Jake still so far from opening up and finding closure after his wife’s death, that the divide is as yet, just far too wide to cross? More importantly, will the prevailing forces allow the relationship room to grow, or is the hand of fate going to deal Jake yet another body blow?
I suspect that this is going to be a series of quite prescriptive storylines, as befits the nature of the character, however Jake is such an easy person to invest in, that I don’t really mind that at all, as there is always that unexpected vital twist in the story that I never saw coming, with author Nick Thacker managing to toss in that one final explosive grenade, which will leave me wanting more and eagerly waiting to get back into Jake Parker’s dark, divisive world!
When all the current madness in the world is over, it would be great to see this series optioned for television or film, as the storylines lend themselves so well to that format.
This is an action packed, fast paced thriller in which Jake Parker is convinced to travel to Puerto Rico to investigate a drugs cartel who may have been responsible for the terrorist attack which murdered his wife. I hadn't known about the conflicting points of view regarding whether Puerto Rico should continue with its current status, become independent or recognised as another state and part of the USA, but this background is skilfully interwoven into the story, adding further depth to the intrigue involving pharmaceutical companies, drug cartels and terrorism.
This story is an enthralling page turner, an edge of your seat read that has so many twists to throw you off track. With drugs, dealers, danger and deceit, this story has it all. There's also murder, mystery, mis-direction and mischief but the twist at the very end it the part to got me - so shocking! I'm definitely not telling you more about that but enough to say that it has certainly made me want to read the next book in this series even more!
As danger mounts, new friendships may help but family secrets, divided loyalties, moles and money will all be involved before this story ends. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and have no hesitation in highly recommending this book (and this series)!
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for my copy of this book which I voluntarily read and have honestly reviewed.
The sophomore instalment of the Jake Parker Thriller series is as scintillating and wildly entertaining as the first, allowing readers a chance to escape their current situation and take a trip to exotic Puerto Rico. Beginning with a bang and concluding with one of the most mind-blowing climaxes I've encountered recently it already has me excited for book three. The plot consists of party politics, shady, underhand tactics, action aplenty and a mystery to die for, all set against the tropical paradise backdrop. Touching on ripped from the headlines issues, I was riveted from the opening right through to the closure. A captivating, danger and drama-filled action adventure, if you're into rapid fire thrills and spills this is a book not to be missed. Highly recommended.
The Patriot by Nick Thacker
This book is book 2 in the Jake Parker series, I hoped to read book 1 before starting this, but didn't have time, however this book reads brilliantly as a standalone. I enjoyed this so much though, I will read book 1 at some point.
This book is a brilliant action packed thriller, and the story really takes off in the second half of the book.
I really liked Jake as a character, and the Puerto Rican setting. The back story was well introduced, and I look forward to reading more in this series.
The Patriot by Nick Thacker is the second book in the Jake Parker new thriller series. This has been one series I have enjoyed reading, especially as it's not usually a book I would've picked up to read.
However, I am glad I found a new author that I just enjoy reading. This series is full of OMG Big twists and turns especially this latest book By Nick with a diamante ending! Excellent throughout.
I highly recommend this series and I am looking forward to Book 3.
Big Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
A solid mystery with some great action. The tropical locale with its divisive politics and corruption make for a great setting. Though I found the pacing a bit uneven I really enjoyed this book. The final page was a WOW ending and I can't wait for book 3.
Excellent Story With Explosive Ending. So some people of late have decried reviews that even mention anything at all about the ending. If you're such a person, stop right here. I'm not going to give away any spoilers- not my style at all - but that ending deserves a mention: It sets up what could be one HELL of a book 3.
Beyond that though, this book does an *excellent* job of showing the dichotomies of life on Puerto Rico and the nearly-as-divisive-as-mainland-US-politics issue of whether PR should be granted Statehood, maintain the status quo, or become an independent nation. Even while the main thrust of the actual action and mystery actually revolves around Big Pharma, how they are treating the citizens of PR, and terrorism. Indeed, we pick up not far after the ending of the first book, which was explosive in its own right and which set in motion the events here, at least as far as Parker's involvement in them.
Truly an excellent mystery with plenty of action in a cool tropical setting (and with the requisite hot, mysterious woman), I'll have a bit more to say about my own story that actually blends well with the overall story here when I participate in the publisher's Blog Tour on my blog (BookAnon.com) on release day. So you might want to check that out - I even have a picture to share. ;)
Obviously, I can't wait for Book 3 - even if it is a possible finale, it should be an epic one. Very much recommended, both this book and the series.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Another good Jake Parker book! I read the first Parker book a few months ago and was very excited to read this one. It was a good, solid mystery with suspense and plenty of action. It was a little slow at times and not as well plotted as the first book, so 4/5 stars.
Jake Parker is a great character, but I feel that the story told in this novel was not up to his standards. It rambles. Perhaps it’s intentional to show the nature of the Puerto Rican relationship with the rest of the United States. The duplicity of so many of the characters was off putting to say the least. Jake deserves a better plot!
Well this book definitely had me on the edge of my seat! This book had action, suspense, lots of heart pounding moments!! Don't know if I would want to be the main characters girlfriend, they all seem to die!! Lol this was definitely a great read! I really enjoyed reading this one!! Thank you Netgalley and the publishers for sharing this book with me!
