Mary Kubica does it again! So many twists and turns, secrets and unexpected jaw-dropping surprise. If you can't trust your neighbors, who can you trust?
This was The Gloss Book Clubs March pick.
From the very beginning the book is clearly a suspense-filled thriller. The main individuals all have you thinking “who did it” based off the title alone. In the end it all comes together and I was thrown for an absolute loop! I would have never believed it played out like that if someone had told me before reading. Right when you thought it had to be one person, someone else would say or do something else. I would recommend this read to anyone interested in staying on your toes wondering what happened, and why is this local woman missing? Where did she go? Is she alive or right across the street?
Ooh time goes by and if i don't write the review right away...sigh. I'm trying to be better. The best i can do right now is give a star count...
Oh Mary, you never let me down...
I’ve read all of Mary’s books and I did really like this one. I do have to mention there are some triggers here If you have problems with child abuse of any kind and some gruesome murders this may not be the book for you. This is a complicated, twisty thriller to figure out, I certainly didn’t see how the mysteries would be resolved or who was responsible for the missing women and children. I thought this would be a perfect five star for me and it was up until the very end. A bit of too many bizarre happenings at one time, but it didn’t really take that much away from my enjoyment of this cleverly plotted book. I recommend this book all of her books are great!
I didn't enjoy this, unfortunately, so I won't be leaving a negative review online. I'm just a little tired of reading about women being abused.
Probably my favorite Kubica Book yet. She delivers her story with such ferocity, it's hard to put the book down!!
From the time I opened this book until the story ended, I was fully engaged! The chilling take of the woman at the beginning and the difficult choices that she had to make was foretelling of what was in store. And Mary Kubica did not fail to deliver!
If one is into action thrillers or mystery, I highly recommend this book!
Compelling and chilling, Local Woman Missing was everything I expect from a Mary Kubica novel. As with her previous work, I was frantically flipping pages to the very end to find out what happens - what a great read!
“That’s not to say I didn’t think about you. I thought about you a lot when you were gone, though all I ever knew was the absence of you.”
I loved this book, it was so fast paced, a lot of stuff happening and many twists that occurred. However, it was really confusing at times with all these characters but it was still a great read.
This story, is told by several different characters' point of view they jump from Delilah to Meredith to Leo, and to Kate. In the story a mom goes for a "run" at night, which is really just a hook up in a car. While on the way to this rendezvous she goes missing. A few weeks later another mother and her daughter disappear during the morning daycare drop off. There are so many secrets and lies- interwoven throughout this story you don't know what to think or who to believe. or who you can trust?
Could there be a kidnapper on the loose? The lives of the husbands and children left behind are forever changed. A brother missed his older sister, a dad missing his wife and daughter & a husband missing his wife..
Despite the difficult subjects she presents in the books, Ms. Kubica keeps you sitting on the edge of your seat guessing to the very end. There are some hard to read scenes with abused children so if you are faint of heart it might not be for you. Over all I would say it's a quick summer read. I have read many other books by this author and have enjoyed them.
Thank you to Mary Kubica, Park Row, and NetGalley for the Advance Review Copy. All opinions included herein are my own.
While it was a slightly slower start, I loved this one as much (if not more) than I love everything Mary Kubica writes. My first thought when finishing was: If this isn’t the next thriller book to get turned into a Netflix show, I’ll be shocked. It was incredible. Mary Kubica always bows me away.
There are several timelines to follow, which I always love when it's pulled off well like it is here. We go from present to various past dates while changing points of views of Delilah, Leo, his mom, and a neighbor. The narrators are resentful, unreliable, hurt, scared, tired, confused. The characters are very real and complex. The atmosphere is often terrifying and I felt the fears of the characters, caught in situations that were inescapable. So much of this book was so right, so chilling and foreboding.
And lastly, that cover is just incredible, am I right or am I right?!
local woman missing was an interesting read. We have one woman, Shelby, goes for a 'run' and never comes home, she's recently had a baby and her husband is prime suspect as he isn't particularly nice. Then we have Meredith who goes missing as well as her daughter6 year old Delilah. The small town is worried they have a kidnapper on the loose question is, are they in real danger?
we have several different narrators throughout the book and flip from past to present. I did find the multi dimensional narration which i found quite difficult to keep up with who was speaking where are they. But once i caught up with everyone i found myself quite intriged by how this book would conclude. i must say i had a wild guess early on in the book which was actually correct, think this was my best guess thus far.
if you are interested in books that centre around women and the different domestic issues they face. then this will be the book for you, if you also love a mystery searching for a reason as well as a suspect then this is the book for you. It does go straight in at the drama but then it settles down for a while so bare with it. There are loads of twists and turns as you go through but it all makes sense at then end, believe me.
3* Thanks to Netgalley for providing mr with a copy of local woman missing as part of the gloss bookclub
Shelby Tebow is gone out for a run when she goes missing. Shortly after, Meredith Dickey and her six-year-old daughter, Delilah vanish blocks away from where Shelby was last seen. Are these incidents connected? The case goes cold. 11 years later, Delilah shows up out of nowhere, bringing more questions than answers...
I LOVE Mary Kubica! I love her multi narrator story telling. It always keeps me on the edge of my seat and I can never predict what's coming. There were a couple of instances where I found a plot line dropped off but I still overall enjoyed the read.
I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a fast paced psychological thriller!
Thank you to HTP Books & The Gloss for my copy as a host of The Gloss: Oakville.
Mary kubica is the queen of thrillers and this one did not disappoint. About half way through when she threw a huge curve ball into the plot my jaw was on the floor. I HAD to Keep reading late into the night to find out what happened.
Another great read by Kubica!!
I love a domestic thriller that keeps me on the edge of my seat but isn't too graphic or violent. This one, aside from the beginning descriptions of the girl's conditions while kidnapped, fit the bill for me. I was thoroughly invested in both the plot and the characters, I kept turning the pages really fast, eager to learn how it would all resolve, and the plot twist at the end wasn't predictable until a few pages before the reveal, which was just enough to keep me guessing, but also satisfying that I figured it out before it was revealed. All in all, a delightful, fun, fast read.
This book was really enjoyable, and a quick read. I certainly wasn't expecting the ending. I did have a problem with some aspects- without giving too much away, I felt that the perspective from one of the children was just too confusing in the sense of the "unreliable narrator" gimmick. I also didn't want the ending to be what it was, but that's just a personal preference. It did keep me guessing, and most transitions between perspectives/time/place were smooth, although a couple were jarring and off-putting. Overall this book was worth reading, but also just one of those books I felt like could have been really great, but due to my subjective preferences, was just "good".
Mary Kubica has done it again and delivered a book that you just want to binge to know what happens at the end. While there wasn't really a significant twist, you always wondered what was going to happen next and how people were related to the event that happened. Absolutely looking forward to what Kubica writes next! Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
This was a great mystery/thriller. I'm going to start reading more books by Mary Kubica.
Thank you NetGalley for an ARC of this book.
Thank you Harlequin/Park Row for providing an eARC for review.
This book was FANTASTIC! Where is the movie? Have you read this? Put it on your list ASASP.
The twist and turns in this story. The multiple pov's made for great distractions. I was, at one point, changing who was guilty every other chapter. I eventually narrowed it down to the person with the most inconsistencies. I never saw the twist. I thought it was so clever how Kubica wrote the sweetest most concerned and strong character and then showed you how they can instantly change before your eye to someone you'd never expect. The acts committed weren't done out of mere fear, but it seemed like in the enduring of such fear morality died.
The multiple story lines kept you confused, but on edge. I took lots of notes knowing that I had to pay attention to all the minor details. It was an exhilarating time!
I found the book a little unbelievable at times--- distractedly so. My mother really enjoyed this book.
