This one was.... fine, but for some reason it didn't grab me. Mary Kubica is known for her thrillers, but none of them have ever wowed me. I keep trying though!
I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I liked this book. The characters were well developed. Most of them were very likable. The plot moved well and even though it bounced back and forth through different time periods, it was easy to follow. There were a couple little aspects that I thought were sort of unnecessary for the plot until it came around with a big twist. And there’s one thing I don’t think they ever answered for me.
I love Mary Kubica, but Local Woman Missing did not resonate with me. The beginning is riveting, but the middle drags. The alternating of the protagonists slowed the pace. And the final chapters left me underwhelmed. I am still going to read everything she writes, but this isn’t one I will be purchasing.
Wow! Another awesome book by Kubica! Will keep you interested & the twists are A+. Definitely recommend.
I would like to thank NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
Mark Kubica doesn't disappoint! I was immediately captivated by the story and it kept me hooked the whole time. It was a little implausible at points, buy it didn't take away from the story. The alternating perspectives helped keep this a fast paced novel.
Mary Kubica has done it again with this mystery thriller.
This book is a page turner and so much is happening with the two time lines. In the beginning you are to piece together what happened and I was thrown. I had so many theories and all were debunked.
This will keep you guessing.
This was a fun, fast-paced read! I had a little bit of a hard time in the beginning reading the writing style when Delilah is narrating, but it didn't last very long. I liked the alternating points of view in the storytelling, and I loved the twist at the end. Mary Kubica is a great storyteller, her books never disappoint!
This was a really good book. After two women (and one of their daughters) go missing from the same neighborhood, the story follows the return of the daughter and the twists and turns that happen once she returns. I really enjoyed this book. The first few chapters were AMAZING. The story died down a little towards the end but it was a good rollercoaster ride.
Loved this book. A thriller that I didn't figure out. It was full of twists and turns that kept me engaged the whole time.
Alright, I'll go 3.5 stars rounded up.
This one had soooo much potential! I loved it so very much for about the first 3/4 of the book. I genuinely didn't know who was going to be the culprit and how everything was going to play out. I really liked the multiple points of view. Leo was a fantastic one to throw in there among the adult characters. I really liked how the author threw in so many red herrings. There were a lot of story lines that made me question each character and their guilt or innocence. It wasn't until about 3/4 of the way through when I finally felt like I guessed one of the suspicious characters...but then it all just took a rushed turn.
Once the killer/kidnapper was named, everything just went flat. One of my big pet peeves happened where all of the sudden, the action stopped and we as readers were just told what went down instead of shown. It was like the author needed the book to just be finished, so she laid out the whole resolution and tied everything up in a neat little bow. Like others have said, I felt that the ending was too neat. That things just went back to normal for the characters without any traumatizing consequences. I also didn't like that there were so many loose end story lines that never really came to fruition. I really enjoyed this book, honestly, I did. And if you can suspend your disbelief as a thriller reader, I think you will, too. But I do feel like there could have been more into the way things played out. More connection between the beginning characters and suspenseful story lines. Maybe in the next book.
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I love a small town creepy twisty mystery thriller. One woman goes missing while out on a run at night. Shortly thereafter a mother and young daughter disappear . Are these missing person cases related ? The a young woman is found after being held captive for a long time. Is it the young daughter? This story had me on edge the whole time. It has a tense creepy vibe throughout .
I enjoyed reading this, it was a great mystery novel and had a great plot. The characters were great and I enjoyed getting to know them.
What another wonderful book by Mary Kubica! She is quickly becoming the queen of one psychological thriller/mystery genre. Love her books, so very excited to get this one. The story grabbed my attention from the beginning. Dealing with the mysterious disappearances and reappearances of a few characters ... the twists and turns were crazy! I do have the say the ending was quite the best in execution, but I still really enjoyed it and would recommend!
I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this book going into it, which sometimes is a good thing. This book has so many twists and turns that it keeps you guessing for more!
Wow this book was intense and heartbreaking. I 100% did not see that coming. Once again Kubica nails it! I read this in one day, could not put it down. Highly recommend reading this!
I am a fan of Mary Kubica! This book did not let me down.
Great from the very beginning, just when I thought I knew
who did it, I would have to change my guesses. Thanks NetGalley
for another good one!
A solid thriller that will keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat for the entire ride. I quite liked the different perspective of the kidnapped girl returning home after so long, a lot of books and even movies end after the victim is found and justice is served so this added a new twist to the thriller category.
This book surprised me. I did not figure out the ending as I usually do. Another enjoyable read from a popular and favorite author of mine. I will recommend this for purchase. I feel my patrons will enjoy it!
This book actually surprised me, which is uncommon. There are so many thrillers on the market now, that it’s hard to find something new. This kept me guessing!
4.5/5
Oh Mary Kubica, you have done it again and completely blown me away with Local Woman Missing! I was gripped right away from the beginning of this crazy book full of secrets, lies, and more secrets. There are a few different character viewpoints as well as different time periods and while it was nonlinear, I didn't find myself confused or lost with either. My friend and I listened to the audiobook together and I loved that there was a different narrator for each viewpoint. The narrators are Brittany Pressley, Jennifer Jill Araya, Gary Tiedemann & Jesse Vilinsky, and I enjoyed every single one of them. I was excited to see Pressley included in the cast since she's one of my favs, but I would be remiss not to mention everyone did an excellent job with their characters. I highly recommend the audio since it did a great job of keeping me engaged and made the book even better thanks to being able to match voices with characters. Especially voices that actually FIT their characters, which doesn't always happen.
Kubica is one of my favorite authors I love the way she does a plot twist. There was so much that I never saw coming, and while ok it probably isn't believable, it sure was twisty and wild. I was fully consumed by every single one of the viewpoints, although my favorites were probably Meredith and Kate. It was interesting getting the POV of a doula and that is something I haven't read before. There are some awful things that happen in Local Woman Missing, and more than one thing that made me angry to read about. It was a little emotional, more than a little thrilling, and very suspenseful the entire time. I honestly think this is going to take the top spot as my favorite novel from Kubica, and the format of 11 years before and 'now' really made this a nail-biter for me. You won't believe how everything is going to end and these characters are really something.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
