3.5 stars. This is a fast paced read and while I can’t say any of the twists were particularly shocking, the book definitely captures the readers attention and you’ll want to know what’s going to happen next.
I think I would have liked it more if I hadn't guessed the plot twist, which I feel was more obvious because I'm so familiar with the story of Jane Eyre. The direction of the plot made sense (I guess) and it was relatively short, but I think I would have liked it better if the obvious solution would've been the truth. Overall, not the worst retelling I've read but nowhere near the best. Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC copy!
Do you love the classics? If so, you may enjoy Hawkins twisty and modern retelling of Jane Eyre." Told from three very different povs, this novel is bound to keep you on edge with each jaw-dropping revelation!
Jane is new to Alabama, and she is broke. Jane snags a job as a dog walker for the posh residents of the gated community - Thornfield Estates. To the residents, Jane is inconsequential. Luckily for her, she barely registers as a bleep on their radar. It definitely makes plundering their riches so much easier.
You see, the thing is, Jane isn't Jane at all. Jane is trying to outrun her past, and it looks like just maybe... finally...her luck has changed.
As chance would have it, Jane meets Eddie Rochester, Thornfields most mysterious resident. Eddie's wife and her best friend disappeared together in a boating accident years prior. Both women believed to have drowned, and no bodies were ever located. As typically happens in small communities, gossip runs wild, and there are plenty of whispers about what might have actually happened and if Eddie is to blame.
When Jane looks at Eddie, all she can see is opportunity. He is the answer to all her problems. He will provide the protection and riches she so desperately seeks.
Jane and Eddie seem to fall for each other instantly, and it's not long before she moves in. But Jane is nothing like Bea, and she is constantly haunted by her ghost. Will Jane get her happily ever after and at what cost?
'The Wife upstairs ' is a jaw-dropping tale of forbidden love and sure to be one the most twisted love triangles you will ever read.
While it is enjoyable and fast-paced and can be easily read, I personally enjoyed it as an audiobook. It is read by three separate narrators who all did a fantastic job breathing life into Jane, Bea, and Eddie.
As always thanks to the publisher and netgalley for providing me a copy in exchange for an honest review
Thanks for the audiobook to review. I enjoyed the narration but found the story hard to follow at times. I enjoyed her other books more. Thanks again for the review copy.
The Wife Upstairs took me a little while to really be able to get into. I am a mood reader so I know it was completely me. Once I was really able to relax into the book and really see what was going on, I was hooked from the very second everything clicked for me.
Rachel has a way that only she can wrap your head around a story and then take you on a rollercoaster of a ride throughout and you end up pumping your fist in the air. This book was the prime example of that. I absolutely fell for the characters that she so gracefully weaved throughout all of the twists and turns.
This was a quick and easy read if you want a thriller fix. I found much of the story to be very predictable though, and even the new twists the author added were easy to guess, because I was already familiar with the original Jane Eyre story. I wish the book had taken a bigger leap to be more surprising and engrossing details. I really did enjoy the story
This was a quick, enjoyable read. A re-telling of Jane Eyre, with a twist. For someone who is familiar with the original story, it was a fun read.
The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins is a modern retelling of Jane Eyre.
A hard-on-her-luck dog walker, Jane meets Eddie, a mysterious and recently widowed guy living in a well-to-do neighborhood. They fall in love and as Jane becomes accustomed to a wealthier lifestyle (and the neighbors that come with it), she can’t stop thinking about Eddie’s wife Bea who died in a boating accident and whose body was never found. As the past and present collide, mysterious backstories are revealed. I always like Rachel Hawkins's books. I enjoyed the vivid writing which painted great pictures of both people and the atmosphere. The pacing was slow at times, but I think that is consistent with the original source material.
I received a review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley for my honest review. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I could not get into this book and ended up calling it quits at about the 30% mark. It just didn't hold my attention and I moved on to read something else.
2.5 stars. This was just an okay read. I felt going in that it was going to be a thriller with some suspense and msytery, but the story kind of fell flat on all accounts. It was a quick, entertaining read, but lacked anything that would make it stand out.
This book was very different from what I had expected. The first few chapters had me hooked but then the pacing kind of threw me off.
The narration of the audiobook brings to life the characters. By having more than one narrator, also gives a theater-like performance.
A fun thriller that plays off of Jane Eyre. Of course, I haven't actually read Jane Eyre so I can't speak to how much The Wife Upstairs follows it. I was not a big fan of the main character and the twists were not very shocking, but it was still well done and very enjoyable!
The Wife Upstairs is all over the place. Is it gothic, a rom-com, or a thriller? In truth, it is probably all three. Being a retelling of Jane Eyre, the novel had a lot to live up to. Rachel Hawkins made sure to have parallels for the Jane Eyre fan to recognize but, they did not hit you in the face and therefore left the book to stand on its own.
However, unlike the classic Jane Eyre which, is a gothic romance to its core The Wife Upstairs had Big Little Lies vibes. It felt like a rom-com with twists added in. Like Big Little Lies Hawkin’s novel had wealthy housewives who craved gossip and scandal with our down-on-her-luck heroine breaking into the group only to stir the pot more.
I enjoyed the evolving relationship between Jane and Eddie. The dialogue between them set the tone for the book, letting the reader know when the plot was about to thicken.
Unfortunately, knowing the plot for Jane Eyre is a downfall; as I had a sense of where the devious twists and turns would take The Wife Upstairs. Although, it did not detract from the journey or climatic end. Rachel Hawkins has created a wonderfully messed up retelling of Jane Eyre with this reader engrossed until the very end.
It really says something about a thriller when you wish you could turn up the speed of the audiobook and still get the full experience - all because you don't want to wait to find out what's next. The Wife Upstairs is full of twists and turns. I did see some things coming, but I was so caught up in the story that I didn't really try to figure it out. Instead, I took it all in and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. All I'm gonna say about the story is that there are secrets, and everything isn't quite as it seems. Other than that, you'll have to check it out for yourself because I'm not giving anything away. The book is well written and the narration is excellent. These narrators did such a good job with the tension of the story, adding an extra bit of oomph to an already good book.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to hear an advanced listening copy of The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins. I'll admit I was a little nervous when people were equating it to a retelling of Jane Eyre as I have *gasp* never read Jane Eyre, but any knowledge of that story was entirely unnecessary for this one. I felt the narrator did an excellent job with voicing the characters and driving the plotline forward with suspense in the places where it was required.
This was my first experience with reading this author, but I really enjoyed the twistiness of the story and look forward to reading more titles by her in the future.
I love Jane Eyre, but mor fern retellings are usually hard to do the story justice. For instance, Re Jane was very liberal with plot. However, this one was very faithful to the story. I like how the author modernized Jane. Thus, this was a fun update on the popular tale. The narrator also did a splendid job!
Thank you to Netgalley and the author for allowing me to read this!
SPOILER ALERT!!! I LOVED THIS BOOK!!
I was instantly intrigued by the synopsis of this book. This book instantly drew me in, I got to explore through the eyes of our main character and this is always my favorite way to discover these details of the story and, it was done very well in this book. I really enjoyed this book and the plot. This author did amazing. I loved the writing style.
The Wife Upstairs is atmospheric domestic suspense, a creepy read that made me feel anxious. You know, the kind of book that makes you say out loud, “What are you doing? Just tell the truth… this is going to end badly!” I didn’t love the book, but page after page it was tense, troubling, and twisty and the ending was a shocker. A decent change of pace. 3 stars.
What a ride! I absolutely loved this book! I've read Rachel Hawkins' Rebel Belle series before and loved it, and I loved this book even more!
