First, I want to thank Miranda Rijks, Inkubator Books and NetGalley for providing me this book so I may bring you this review.
Guaranteed you will think twice of who you let stay over after reading Miranda Rijks The Visitors! She captured my undivided attention from the very beginning to the end of the book. I could not put it down as I had to know how it would end.
WOW!! Miranda wrote an incredibly intense, extremely fast paced, very eye opening birds eye view of a world many of us don’t get to see prologue! The shock value and details she put into it were mind blowing. You could vividly see the scene play in your head but still at the same time you didn’t want to see that image!
Miranda described the renovations of the barn so beautifully and picturesque. It would definitely be a place I would like to stay at. Yes, I would leave a review on Tripfinder!
The Visitors dealt with some important issues such as domestic abuse, anger management, road rage, infidelity, and gluten intolerance.
I laughed at the blood sisters comment and scene. Like Hannah I too remember what it meant from when I was a kid. However, I don’t think the young girls took It like that.
Oh, those visitors were a very unique family that pushed a lot of people’s buttons including mine!! The more you got to know them the more they creeped you out!
Speechless...just speechless with the twisted climax of the jaw dropping climax! So many secrets revealed left and right. Some you never saw coming….some you had an idea of.
The graphics on the cover left you wanting to know more about this book as it was mysterious.
My heart goes out to the author Miranda Rijks for being diagnosed in August 2015 of Ewing's Sarcoma (a rare bone cancer). She mentions in the book that sarcoma is the loneliest cancer as many people have never heard of it. Sadly, many doctors don’t have much knowledge of it either. Miranda raises money for research for Sarcoma UK as there are very little treatment options available. She gives a link in the back of the book if you would like to help her efforts out.
I love how Miranda thanks her readers for reviewing her books. I appreciate knowing that I am helping her live her dream life as a full-time author. It is little things like this that give me great satisfaction for being a book reviewer.
Yet another amazing psychological thriller from Miranda Rijks. Hannah has renovated the barn on their isolated property into a rental holiday cottage. She welcomes Mike, Nadia and their daughter into the barn and soon realises they are trouble. They are loud, rude and show no respect for the property, Fran or her family. Mike constantly tries to antagonise Fran's husband Daniel and the public falling out is witnessed on several occasions. Then he is found murdered on their drive and Daniel's fingerprints are on the weapon. Fran sets out to clear her husband's name.
The author has setup a plot which most of us would have faced or heard about it from one of our friends, challenges during their stay in a rented house. The character of Hannah is so believable that I could feel myself nodding along with her interpretation and feeling her tension. The book is well paced and the twists in the plot is beautifully done.
This was one of my first books of Miranda and she is now in my favourite list. Definitely a book to be enjoyed, highly recommended reading.
Thank you Netgalley for providing me with the copy for an honest review of it.
Hannah’s life is almost perfect. She’s a full-time mother to two young children and married to successful cardiologist Daniel.
The only thing missing is a project of her own. So she has poured heart and soul into converting their stone barn into a beautiful holiday rental.
Things take a dark turn when visitors Mike and Nadia come to stay. They are noisy, dirty and disrespectful. Hannah is incensed by their behaviour, worried they may wreck her lovingly restored barn.
But she gradually realises that property damage is the least of her worries. Nadia and Mike aren’t here just for a holiday - they have a deeper, darker purpose, one that threatens to destroy Hannah’s entire life.
Thanks to NetGalley and Publisher for giving me an advanced copy.
This book was great.
Scary and exciting to read. Would so recommend this to other people who ask.
5*****
This book, as always was well written and actually pretty terrifying. Amazing and scary to think this could happen to any one of us.
I always love reading a good thriller, and this book does not disappoint.
The author nicely writes the book. It’s hard to put this book down once you start reading it. The author writes the story using short sentences that grabs your attention. Moreover, the plot is gripping, that holds your interest. The author also nicely paced the book. It starts slowly but picks up gradually, which leads to an exciting climax. Also, the ending had a nice twist to it that I did not see coming.
However, I thought the story ended abruptly and felt rushed. Moreover, while I enjoyed the plot, I did not care for the characters much. I felt Hannah came across as a weak character. At times, I wanted to shake her because she makes faulty decisions. It takes a while for her to stand up for herself. Daniel also unnerved me.
Nevertheless, the author writes the story in such a compelling manner that I could not put it down. Overall, “The Visitors” is a good mystery thriller that I enjoyed reading.
We all have a favourite author where you are guaranteed a great story and for me this author is one of mine. I have loved all of her other books!!
Hannah’s husband Daniel is a successful surgeon. She has converted their unused barn into a luxury holiday let and is hoping this new enterprise and her 2 children will keep her occupied, whilst her husband spends many nights working from home.
Along comes the Jones family. Mike, Nadia and Kayleigh who is nine. They have booked to stay in the barn, but all is not well, let’s just say that they are not people you would want as your neighbours!!
Without giving anything away the Jones’s complaints spiral into something more threatening and Hannah realises that her life will never be the same again!! To think at the beginning she was worried about a bad review from this obnoxious family and now she just wants them to leave!!
I was completely enthralled with this book and would highly recommend reading it.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for a review.
What a story! I thoroughly enjoyed this thriller. The characters were realistic and some that you will love to hate. The final twist was a little anti-climatic and I didn't particularly like the ending but all in all a very entertaining read.
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to preview The Visitors by Miranda Rijks. This is a UK thriller/suspense novel about Hannah. A married woman with two children and a husband who is a respected doctor. Hannah is bored, so she opens up what we call an ABB and in the UK, a holiday cottage. All is well until she has some visitors and they are from hell.
Mark and Nadia from day one are not only strange but are "Tone Deaf". They appear to be rude, unclean, and overall not the kind of visitors Hannah expects in her lovely cottage.
Things go from bad to worse and soon Hannah realizes she can't get them out - they change the locks, they have all kinds of issues, and soon someone will face an unexpected end. And Hannah is helpless to stop this madness and her world is suddenly not the same and won't ever be again.
Good UK thriller.
3.5 stars.
Fantastic edge of your seat thriller about the holiday rental guests from hell. When Hannah renovates her barn to be a holiday guest rental she has high hopes. With beautiful high end finishes, she expects to have no problem renting out the gorgeous property. What she doesn’t expect is Mike and Nadia and the chaos they bring. Extremely fast paced and addictive with an unexpected twist at the end, this book is a must read.
This is a great thriller. I enjoyed the plot, even if it was predictable at times. I read this book in one sitting, I would definitely recommend it.
Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy of this E-book to review via Netgalley
.
Absolutely loved this book , loved the characters and the tense story with the slow build up . In fact I loved everything about this book , can’t rate highly enough . I will definitely be reading more from this author
The perfect(ly horrid) guests: lots of nervous suspense😳
4-4.5🌟 stars
Miranda Rijks is a new writer to me and I liked the constant suspense as heroine Hannah is constantly waiting for the next shoe to drop after she rents her holiday accommodation barn to a family of three and trouble ensues.
Hannah seems a perfectionist and a timid woman, a bit leery of her surgeon husband's moods and obsessing about getting good ratings from her paying guests. She's terribly vulnerable on her isolated property with her husband away for days and increasingly demanding paying guests Nadia and Mike.
Yes, in my armchair I kept questioning why she lets people keep pushing her without standing up for herself, but ultimately she does go on the offensive and that's when the story really took off for me. There are numerous twists, some pretty predictable, but Rijks did a great job maintaining tension and mystery right through to the confrontational climax. And then she gave Hannah a real opportunity to get her own back: I loved the final scene at the prison!
On the whole, a solidly good whodunit that moved quickly and kept my interest beginning to end.
Thanks to publisher Inkubator and NetGalley for providing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Very good book, I loved it. It finally got me out of my slump of not reading. I loved all the crazy things they were doing in the barn and the first half of the book really kept me on my toes.
I’m praying that Miranda Rijks is holed up in Covid quarantine and writing twenty four/seven cos I could read her books every day of the year. They don't follow a predictable formula and it always feature some of the most despicable characters in psychological thriller land. No exception here. Holiday rentals and Airbnb seem like easy money to some but often they are the stuff of nightmares with awful stories in the press of trashed rooms and destroyed property. Hannah, happy and somewhat naive quickly learns that some visitors should never, ever, be invited into your home, your family and your head. Another of those just-one-more-chapter-books from this brilliant writer until you finish it - and then can’t sleep as you can’t get over what you just read. And pray another is on it’s way.
A well written story with a predictable plot. As the story progresses one could easily guess where it is headed, nevertheless the writing style of the author kept the pace going. Any deviation and the reader would feel like closing the book. The conclusion felt inadequate as though the author was in a rush to finish it. An easy read with nothing heavy to dwell on.
This book greatly reminded me of the saying “No good deed goes unpunished”. The protagonist׳s decision to provide a couple of strangers a place to stay comes back to haunt her, with a vengeance...
I received an ARC copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my,honest opinion of it. Hannah is leading the perfect life married to surgeon Daniel. They have two children and she teaches music on the side. She and her husband transform the barn on their property to a beautiful getaway that Hannah rents out to people. Along come renters, Nadia and Mike and their daughter. From the moment they move into the barn, Hannah and Daniel get bad vibes about them and then it all gets crazy. I so enjoyed this book and would highly recommend this very suspenseful novel.
I was drawn to this one for a number of reasons. Firstly, I have read a book by this author before and I found it to be original, suspenseful and well researched. Also, the title sounds mysterious and the striking cover completely pulls you in and mames you ask questions about who is visiting and why.
Hannah and Daniel’s life looks perfect from the outside. They are a well off family, Daniel has a good job and Hannah manages family life perfectly well, though she sometimes has to go it alone due to Daniel’s frequent trips to work away in London. Therefore, she can’t help feeling a little lonely and inadequate at times. She decides to throw herself into a barn conversion which she is going to turn into a holiday let. However, she gets far more than she bargained for with her first visitors…
The characters in this book are mostly realistic and definitely flawed. Hannah is easily influenced and manipulated, Daniel is an ignorant workaholic, and the guests are rude and selfish. However, I have thoroughly enjoyed disliking this these characters and shouting at them in my head!
One of the main things I love about Miranda’s books is that the suspense and tension is so subtle. It takes form as a very quiet and eerie sense of foreboding, as things go from bad to worse and inexplicable or unexpected things happen…
The tension builds very slowly and then there is a brilliant, shocking twist as we discover why Mike and Nadia are really there…
Overall, this has been a book which has completely pulled me in and gripped me in and one I would recommend to fans of psychological thrillers.
