WOW aptly describes this mystery/suspense novel. Loved every single page, and the ending just blew me away. It was truly riveting, and I can't say that about many books . Writing was great, and the plot was so unique and different from anything I've ever read, You will be in the edge of your seat. I know I was. A ten star read for sure!
In The Visitors, readers follow Hannah Pieters as she navigates family life, a burgeoning business, and tenants from hell..
Hannah and her husband, Daniel, live in a gloriously secluded cottage in the British countryside. Hannah has painstakingly converted a barn on their property to a holiday rental, somewhat to her husband's dismay. But Hannah is determined to prove her ingenuity and business savvy to Daniel, who spends most of his week away from home working as a cardiothoracic surgeon.
Hannah's plans for a successful business go awry when the second visitors of her rental arrive. Something is off about Mike, Nadia, and daughter Kayleigh. It's not just that they trash the rental, play booming music at all hours, and routinely impose themselves upon Hannah. There's something sinister about these people that can be sensed from the moment they appear.
I devoured The Visitors in two days. It required I suspend my imagination a bit, but once I gave into the wild ride I couldn't stop reading. I found myself audibly rooting for Hannah while reading alone at home. "C'mon, Hannah - stand up for yourself!" was a frequent refrain of mine. I found the character descriptions quite wonderful and was able to picture each individual with ease. The isolated setting of the novel intensified the eeriness of having wretched and suspicious guests.
This book doesn't present anything new or profound to the literary world. What it does is entertain. It indulges the reader, giving us exactly what we need to stay intrigued and have fun. It's an enjoyable thriller with a dash of soap-opera drama to make it a quick and engaging way to spend a weekend afternoon.
This is a fantastic book! Full of frustrations and twists and half truths, the pace builds to a climax with enough surprises to keep things interesting right to the end. None of the characters is at all likeable meaning you can get into the mystery without being biased towards a particular outcome. The resolution made me wonder how I would have reacted in Hannah’s situation. Really recommend this book as a clever mystery which is well written and thoroughly engaging.
The Visitors Miranda Rijks
This was one of the best books I have read in a while, it was a real page turner. The opening chapter had me hooked, and kept me engrossed until the end.
Hannahs life seemed so simple, and she starts a new business, renting out a converted barn to holiday makers. Mike and Nadia arrive, and life quickly spirals out of control, I quite enjoyed reading their antics!!
This book was brilliantly unpredictable, and I loved trying to work out where the story was going, and being wrong every time.
This is the second book I have read by this author having enjoyed 'The Arrangement' earlier this year. I really enjoyed this from start to finish and didn't want to put the book down. Great characters that were frustrating, horrible human beings but great to read about. Well paced addictive plot that certainly gripped me. I found the authors note at the end of the book explaining her situation very interesting.
Hannah and Daniel have a great life, Daniel is a successful cardiologist and Hannah is a full-time mother to two young children and recently taken on her own project. They have converted the barn into a top of the range holiday rental. Everything is going smoothly until the new visitors Mike and Nadia come to stay at the holiday home. They are the family from hell, loud, filthy and disrespectful, certainly not the ideal guests Hannah had in mind and she is concerned what state they will leave her dream home in when they leave.
The problem is their untidiness is not the only problem they have and signs are that there are other things Hannah needs to worry about. Her family and all her dreams are under threat while the visitors remain. With no sign of the end of this torment Hannah feels the need to take action and fight back.
A really enjoyable and addictive read.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Inkubator books for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
The Visitors by Miranda Rijks is the perfect read if you are looking for a twisty thriller that will hold you in its grasp until the final page. For me, this author is one who can do no wrong, and this latest offering proves no exception.
Hannah is married to surgeon Daniel, and decides to convert an unused barn on their property to a holiday cottage to let. Daniel spends many nights working away, and it will be nice to have some company from time to time on the property, both for herself and her young children. But the enterprise is off to an unexpected start when the Jones family arrive, beginning with the litany of complaints that Hannah does everything in her power to remedy and appease. As the guests continue to make things increasingly miserable, Hannah realizes that things are spiralling out of control and that her life as she knows it might never again be the same.
This is my favourite type of thriller, and it ticks all of the boxes for a truly unputdownable read. I cannot wait to see what the clever Ms Rijks offers up next. 4.5 stars
Many thanks to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for this ARC.
Miranda Rijks really knows how to write the perfect Psychological Thriller. The tension and suspense are kept at a steady pace throughout the book. It was gripping and riveting from start to finish.
I didn’t have a clue how the book would end or what the twists would be, but when they came they were a little of what I’d suspected, but I hadn’t quite been able to figure it all out. I don’t often remember the prologue to a book until the end and go “oh yeah the author did sort of warn us right back then!” However, in this case, it stuck with me throughout the book, so I was expecting a certain outcome, and at one point I was tempted to go back and read it but decided to carry on reading and see how it played out instead.
I felt such anxiety at Mike and Nadia’s antics; I’m a neat freak so their mess would have driven me up the wall as well and the thought of them trashy that beautiful barn had me very jittery. They were great characters, though, really feisty and well thought out. Hannah, on the other hand, seemed to be a bit of an airhead. She was way too accepting of circumstances and too much of a ‘yes-man’. I know she wanted good reviews, but this behaviour carried on after the ‘event’. She didn’t question enough of her husband’s strange attitudes or the missing 80k. I’d have been hunting that down with all my might!
I loved Rijks’ note at the end, explaining how this book came into fruition and how important it is to her; it made the book feel all that more special.
Overall, a fantastic and brilliantly written book.
An excellent psychological thriller about visiting guests. When you allow people to visit you what exactly do you let into your home? Favor that goes wrong in a killer way. I highly recommend this book for anyone that likes a psychological thriller.
