Another good book in the series with Thomas and Nora separately following two cold cases after the discovery of skeletal remnants in a construction site. The chapters as always kept me on the edge and the conclusion for all the characters is satisfying. Whereas I admired Nora in her previous outings, in this book she is very stupid in immersing herself in the bottle and running around with half baked ideas. I thought this is one Scandinavian series with a level headed protagonist only to be proven wrong.
Buried in Secret by Viveca Sten kept me hooked despite a bit of a slow beginning. Skeletal remains are found when a new construction project begins on an uninhabited island. Investigator Thomas Andreasson is brought in. Unfortunately, his best friend, Nora Linde, decides that she needs to get involved.
The only problem is that she's supposed to be on leave due to her last case ending on an intimidating note. Nora is severely depressed and having nightmares. Her marriage struggling and feeling useless, Nora decides to find redemption by inserting herself into the investigation. The evidence suggests two cold cases could be linked to the remains: two women who've been missing for just over ten years. Suddenly Nora feels driven to find the key to the mystery. As the cold cases come together, Nora follows the twisted trail of vengeance and betrayal. Once you get into this one, you'll have a hard time putting it down.
Thank you Netgalley and Amazon Crossing for the eARC.
This 10th installment in the series is hard to put down. We not only have Nora's and Thomas' pov's, but those of the victims as well, which I really enjoyed. It sure kept me reading obsessively, wanting to know what happened to those women.
Nora's descent into depression and anxiety, due to a previous case, cause her to drink too much and rely on sleeping aids, which was a bit disappointing, but probably caused by her PTSD and intense fear for her life, so understandable. Her relationships with her husband Jonas and Thomas suffer as a result and she tries to take her mind off by delving into the police case of bones found on an uninhabited island. She's on sick leave and not allowed to go near any cases and could lose her job as Prosecutor.
As usual, a highly readable mystery which I definitely recommend!
This is her 10th book on the Sandhamn Murders and it was a especially hard for me to read about Nora as a lush. I new why she was using wine as a potential sleeping aid. She had a bad argument with Jonas and then he had to fly off for four days. Leaving Nora with Julia to keep watch. We have two potential victims that could have been left for dead 10 years prior. I don't want to let you know who they are, so you can read about it. Follow it to you own conclusions and see if they come out or not. Certain people can be looked at as bad, and others as good. People don't always come out as they do, don't let yourself get too emotional about first impressions. Viveca did a good job at putting people into situations which may or may not have been good. Read it and you'll see for yourself how it comes out in the end. I see where Camilla gets her imagination for her books.
Bones are found at a construction site and with the ensuing investigation, Nora Linde finds herself spiraling out of control from the fallout of a previous case.
I enjoy this series immensely and was disheartened to read about Nora's physical and emotional decline. However, I also came to realize that no matter how strong a character appears, even the strongest need help.
Will this case that she immerses herself in against better judgement be her permanent downfall.....or her redemption?
This book is due out in 2022. Great start to the new year!
I always enjoy this series! Viveca Sten is one of the few authors who really understands a timeline and subtle shifts in life between the ages. The main characters are aged correctly and things like pointing out that someone born in the nineties never had to practice penmanship or write by hand was very true. It seems little but so many books really get details wrong and distracts me from the plot. This book seemed well thought out and the mystery and the personal storylines fit the previous nine books.
Wow!! What a great book! My heart is pounding so hard right now! Lol I stayed up reading this book and NIW I really don't think I can fall asleep?! This book was crazy thrilling!! Especially at the end! Thus book had suspense, intrigue, and so many heart pounding moments! There were so many characters that you just didn't know what happened to them until the end! It was just such a thrilling book for me! I enjoyed this book immensely! I highly recommend reading this book! Its so worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me! And a big thank you to one of my new favorite authors, Viveca Sten! For your amazing words! Wow! Great book!
This is my first book in the series and I read it as stand alone. I actually did not know that it was part of the series so I was thrown off by a lot of references to the past that was not readily explained. Overall, I think one can read it as a stand alone book; however, having not invested in Nora in the past I had a very hard time liking her in the beginning. Having a main heroine alcoholic and on pills worked in The Girl on the Train and The Woman in the Window in my opinion, but this time at least not for me. Maybe I am getting tired of the main heroines being drunks or I could not overlook the fact that she had her young daughter with her while she was abusing alcohol so that is child neglect to me. She was also not very likable on how she got herself into the investigation (by lies and misconduct) and how she kept justifying her own behaviour. The whole self-pity me was also becoming tiresome (no one loves me!). What happened to all strong and powerful heroines out there??
The end of the book redeemed itself and I liked it how it all came together without being far stretched (like some other mystery books tend to end). Actually the end is quite good and I am happy that I have finished the book and... finally Nora stopped drinking! If I were already invested in her from the series I probably could have overlooked her behaviour in this book but as an introduction she was very hard to be liked. Her behaviour towards her husband was so immature and her switch on and off on feeling remorse was also unappealing (maybe it was alcohol talking). I only wish the author invested more in the resolution of her marriage troubles rather than due to her near-death experience. That is a cheap solution to be thrown at the end. Most people can relate to marriage troubles, it would have been appreciated by many readers if they addressed their problems before the end.
p.s. having visited the Stockholm archipelago I really appreciated the references to the islands. It brought out some nostalgy about Sandhamn.

On a small island just off of Sandhamn, a construction crew is busy working. They come upon a skeleton. Detective Thomas Andreasson and his partner Aram are on the case. Together with the balance of the team, they determine that they have three potential identities: an elderly man, and two women. Astrid is a seventeen-year old and Siri is a married woman a bit older.
Before long, Nora Linde, prosecutor, becomes deeply involved in the case. She can’t seem to help herself. She is obsessed with a criminal who has threatened her and her daughter. She is terrified of this man. She begins to drink - a lot.
The married woman Siri looks good to the police. Her marriage was a shambles and her husband, Petter Grandin, seems to be an awful person. He makes a great suspect. Astrid is working as a waitress and her mother is a drinker and not very caring. Nora believes the body to be that of Astrid.
Nora is investigating on her own and gets herself into much trouble. It’s up to Thomas and Aram to rescue her.
This book is very well written and plotted. I truly enjoyed it. I have read all of Ms. Sten’s novels and have liked them all. I like following the personal lives of the two major characters Thomas and Nora. Ms. Marlaine Delargy did a remarkable job in translating this book as well. I believe she has translated all of Ms. Sten’s books.
I want to thank NetGalley and Amazon Crossing for forwarding to me a copy of this very good book for me to read, enjoy and review. The opinions expressed here are my own.
Well what a book! This is my first book from Viveca Sten and although this book can be read on its own it definitely refers to events that happened before.
This story tells of two women disappearing around the same time 10 years prior to the time at which the story is set. The police is investigating their cases again as bones were found on an island, Telegrafholmen which is very close to where both women used to live. Also involved in the investigation is a prosecutor on sick leave who needs the distraction to battle her own demons.
This book has a lot to offer: depression, anxiety, marital problems, rape, parental abuse, parental neglect but also compassion, friendship, love, perseverance.
It also keeps you on the edge of your seat. My heart rate increased at time I was so anxious. It is a well written book that will keep you turning the pages. Recommended.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing a copy of the book.

Another great book from the author. Once again a lot of fun mystery and suspense. The author does a great job of integrating each part of the storyline so that it keeps the reader interested. This is a book which I recommend to others as I await the next book in this series.
