This was absolutely amazing and is a new all time favorite for me!
The atmosphere, the writing, the characters, everything was so well done in this book. I adored it and cannot get enough. I am dying to get my hands on the sequel, I really need it! I have nothing to say but positive things about this book. I adore dark academia books with a witchy flare and this one definitely embodies that. I adored it and would highly recommend! The audiobook, which is how I read it, reads really quickly and is a great one to listen to. So good and I need more!!
read in 2021 -2.5 stars
There was a lot going on in this book which made it a fast paced read but felt it was lacking the "it" factor.
The dynamics between the sisterhood was not something I enjoyed and often felt a little toxic. Along with all the mixed romances between all the characters.
The ending felt rushed with loose ends, but was not something I really wanted to continue the series for.
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for an arc ebook copy in exchange for my honest review
This narrator was great! Her southern accent was perfect, slow and sultry I tried listening to a different story set in the South and the person narrating made them sound stupid.
As for the story, I loved every minute. It kept me guessing all the way to the end.
Kappa Rho Nu isn't your average sorority, they had parties, elaborate fundraisers, and witches. I struggled getting into the story. I was a mom during college so the whole sororities was never a part of my experience. So I didn't really get the pressure to join or the appeal. But once it got going I didn't care. It was a slow burn type of feel to the story, but only because there were so many side plots. I was struggling to keep some of the characters straight, there were several that had so much in common I kept getting them mixed up. But overall it was a fun read. I will be checking out the sequel.
4 stars.
DNF
Since I, unfortunately, did not finish this book, I do not feel comfortable giving it a rating. I will give it a 3-star rating since I have to provide an actual rating of 3 stars to keep it neutral.
The Ravens had the potential to be a good book, but I didn't care for it. I struggled to get into the story from the very start. I physically could not read another page. And as much as I hate to DNF a book, I could not find the energy to push through.
The characters were impossible to like. I wanted to like the school setting and the sisterhood vibe this book tried to provide. But I was just not feeling it.
I wish I would have liked this book, but you can't win them all.
I should have liked this book, but I read it at a time when I was sick and tired of white privilege. I also read it after Legendborn which was such a phenomenal book, this one didn't stand a chance.
Sorority girls - but make them witches? I'm in!
The blurb drew me in. The story was good - it wasn't anything fresh necessarily, but it kept my attention. I'll for sure check out the next book though.
I'd probably have had more fun in my sorority if it were full of witches. This book was absolute catnip for me (a coven disguised as a sorority) and I can't wait for the sequel.
Narration: Single narrator for dual POVs. It takes a bit to get used to, but I still enjoyed it.
Thanks to Recorded Books and Netgalley for my copy to review.
Thank you to Netgalley and the author for allowing me to read this!
UMMMM YES PLEASE!! I was instantly intrigued by the synopsis of this book and this book cover!!! This book instantly drew me in. I really enjoyed this book and the plot. This author did amazing. I loved the writing style.
A book about witches and a sorority that hides a coven ... SIGN me up!!! The Ravens is good in a guilty pleasure kind of way. Definitely would make for a great television series for sure.
Settle in for a tale about sisterhood, witchcraft, self-discovery, spells, and secrets. Vivi is moving onto college and joins Kappa sorority, only to find out that spell casting will be a large part of her time with the sisters.
This book includes two POVs, has some thrills, has a narrator to set the dark mood, and could easily be devoured by fantasy and magic YA aficionados. Thank you Netgalley and the publishers for this ARC.
I want to thank Netgalley for giving me an ARC of this book in exchange of my honest review.
I really loved this book, I enjoyed it, I love some good fantasy and paranormla story with witches, and this has been a really good experience, I WOULD RECCOMEND IT
If you've watched any of the coven-type TV shows or movies, then you already have the gist of The Ravens. Just think The Craft or The Order, and you've got a pretty good idea of what's happening here. The problem is the execution doesn't quite measure up. This one is a little too predictable and the villain is a little too easy to figure out. There was also an angle or two that felt unnecessary - more like filler than anything to further the plot. That said, the pacing was good, and the world the author has created is interesting. I think the story did have promise, and the narrators did their job quite well. To my recollection, this is my first time listening to either narrator and based on their performance here, I would listen to them again. I know I sound like a negative Nancy here, and I think it's got a lot to do with me comparing this with similar stories. Standing on its own, I'd say this one falls somewhere in the fair to middlin range, and I did keep listening til the end, so it's certainly worth the listen. With that in mind, I am interested to check out the next in the series to see where things go and how it all sits with me. I'd say this one would appeal to anyone who enjoys reading about witches and covens, sisterhood and betrayal.
Wonderful book. I loved listening to this! It was unique and exciting. I can’t wait to read or listen to more of this author!
I received an advanced copy of this audiobook from the publisher through netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This book is well written and the characters are described well. Danielle paige did a fantastic job reading this book. It sucks you in the very first minute you listen. You are the characters you are not just listening to this book. I really enjoyed ViVi character. It is in stores now for $24.99. I highly recommend listening to this book.
All this time, I hadn't realized I had been approved for an ARC of this book! I was so disappointed when I didn't get book 2 and now I know why!
I feel really silly but also so thankful for this. Since I didn't see I received this book through NetGalley, I bought this book for myself. I really loved this book. I loved it so much that now I own three different copies of it, plus the audiobook.
The story follows a freshman named Vivi and a junior called Scarlet. On the college campus, there's a coven of switched hidden at a sorority. Scarlet wants to be the next president of their sorority, and Vivi wants to enjoy the new beginnings, to start a new life, away from her mother who has a thing for moving. She feels like she belongs in this new environment as she learns more about herself and what she can do. The characters were really fun to read. Scarlet was my favorite, I would like to be like her.
I can't wait to see these characters evolve in book 2.
I loved the concept of this book. It seemed like such a fresh take on witch stories and magic, and the book definitely delivers. I loved the undertones of family, friendship, and finding oneself.
The audiobook was performed well by the narrator, in a way that keeps you engaged even if you're just listening.
Overall, I adore this book, can't stop talking about it with my friends, and I'm looking forward to reading The Monarchs. If you enjoy YA and witches, you will definitely love this book.
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* Pretty good witchy book, like how it mentions characters skin colors and ethnicity and doesn't just have POC as tokens and white people as the default (meaning duh you dont need to say theyre white bc of course they are!).
I really enjoyed this book! The Ravens follows a coven of witches hidden at a sorority on a college campus. We follow Vivi, a freshman wanting to fit in, and Scarlett, a junior following her mom's expectations, through the beginning of the school year. The two girls, along with their coven, have secrets that risk being told as they begin to experience dark energy.
I loved the idea of witches as a sorority! I was not part of a sorority through university, so learning a little bit about the world was interesting to me. I also really liked Scarlett, she had some great qualities and it felt like we actually did learn about her and her qualities. Vivi was just kind of flat for me. We did not learn much about her and she just seemed to be lacking but I think if her character was expanded, I would have really liked her as well, she has a lot of promise to her so hopefully in the next book, she will evolve a little.
I also really liked the plot idea. I think in some spots, it was done really really well and I was enjoying it so much, but there were times that the plot maybe lacked a little and I found it to be kind of predictable at points. There was a great emphasis on the importance of friendship and family, dealing with grief, and learning who you are, and these were done all pretty well. The romance featured was a little unnecessary but I didn't not enjoy it and I feel like it did help the novel move along a bit.
However, as a history major in university, did not like the rude comment about history majors loool. So overall, I did enjoy this book and I am excited for book 2
I really, really enjoyed this book. A total palette cleanser and got me out of a book slump. Very interesting to read and I loved the witchy premise.
Be still my heart! I am an ENORMOUS Paige fan, which is what made me pick this up originally. This would be my first book from Morgan, so I was interested in seeing how the two writers worked together in tandem.
I was not disappointed! College life, witches, friendships, twists and surprises all draw you in while pushing you along with a forcefulness that does not let you go.
While I usually give long, drawn out reviews but this one will be short and sweet - because too much info will give away the book!
My recommendation - if you like friendships, witches, and secrets - this novel is for you!
