I received an ARC of this book thanks to NetGalley and publisher Hodder & Stoughton & RB Media in exchange for an honest review.
The Ravens is the story every witch-obsessed teenage girl wants to read (and quite a few young adults too). It is simply the story of two college girls who are part of a sorority which actually turns out to be a coven. We have Scarlett, the more experienced and older sorority member who is keen to fight for her place as leader (and also for her failing relationship with her boyfriend) and Vivi, the new girl who is discovering she is a witch for the first time (among a blossoming romance with none other than Scarlett's boyfriend). Tensions rise when the use of dark magic is suspected and a girl from the sorority goes missing.
I was lucky enough to be given both an audio and an e-ARC of this book, so I'm in the unique position of having listened to 75% of it and read the other 25% physically. I will say, I wish I had listened to less of it as I connected so much more with the written version. The audiobook is fine and there's nothing inherently wrong with it, but this book has a very specific style of dialogue and I think it got lost a bit in translation. When I was listening, I found that the characters blended together more. I could tell Vivi and Scarlett apart but I had no idea there were even two male characters until I read someone else's review on Goodreads. The dialogue being very stylised also means that it comes off a bit awkward when it is read out loud.
As soon as I switched to the ebook though, I was hooked. Instantly the characters and plot came to life, and I desperately wanted more of this world. I think this is a fantastic set up for a much larger, Buffy-esque series focusing on this sorority fighting the powers of darkness and I really want that. This is a solid fantasy story with a cool use of magic, interesting worldbuilding and great characters to populate that world.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I definitely have plans again to read it entirely in print as I think it will get a higher rating from me. As it is, it still has a lot of strengths and I want to be clear that my view of the audiobook is mostly down to personal taste and preference. If you enjoy witchy stories and like a focus on exploring the supernatural through college-age characters, you should definitely give The Ravens a try.
Overall Rating: 4/5 stars
I enjoyed listening to this witchy fantasy for young adults. It follows two witches - Scarlet, a junior at the Savannah college that provides the backdrop to this story, and Vivi, a freshman. While Scarlet struggles to stick to her plans for a future amidst her grieving for her old nanny and mentor and struggling to live in her sister's shadow. Scarlet wants to be the next president of their sorority - which is actually a front for their coven. Vivi meanwhile is excited to start a new life in one place, away from her flighty mother who keeps them constantly on the move. She is shocked to feel a strong sense of belonging for the first time as she learns more about herself and more about her magic.
The characters come to life and while some parts of the plot follow more predictable paths, there are also some genuine surprises. The audio version is well-performed and I am looking forward to the sequel that is due to be released next year!
I loved the dark edge to this book! I found myself thoroughly entertained and enthralled by both the characters and plot and couldn’t stop reading it!
Thank you so much to the publisher and NetGalley for an audiobook copy in exchange for an honest review.
College can be a real witch, literally. The sisters at Kappa Rho Nu also known as the Ravens are members of the most powerful coven in the world. Scarlett is a junior at Westerly who come from a long line of Ravens. She even hopes to be the president of the Ravensher senior year as long as everything goes smoothly. When a banished ex-coven member returns to reak havock on her former sisters, will the secrets she carries spell trouble for Scarlett and her sisters? Vivi, a fresh faced freshman is pulled into the Ravens as a pledge who had no former knowledge of magic. Even with the promise of witchcraft, Vivi is most excited by the promise of sisters and somewhere to call home. Her mother moved her around frequently as she grew up, but Vivi always chalked it up to paranoia. As she immerses herself further into the coven Vivi begins to uncover there was much more to her mother moving them around and that her mother may not be the tarot fraud Vivi always thought she was.
Guys, this book is magical. It consumed my world as I was listening to it, and whenever I couldn't I was thinking about when I would be able to listen again. The magic system is phenomenal and it was great to see tarot utalized for more than just telling the future. I was sure the characters would be the typical "my poo don't stink, I hate new girls and plan on making their life hell because someone did that to me" and "I would do literally anything to be a part of this"; but I was massively wrong. The authors really ran with the thought of sisterhood and it shows. While of course there are some growing pains, these girls really come together and grow. The story itself had me guessing(incorrectly might I add) until the very end and it all tied together in the end in a way that is super rare for young adult books. I am salivating for the sequel and will just be sitting here eager for every tidbit until it's released(I'm looking at you cover reveal!).
In closing, five magical stars for the first book in a new series. I recommend this book for anyone 12+(there is a bit of violence and romance) who loves fantasy or magic. If you loved These Witches Don't Burn you'll devour this like I did. Let me know which suit of the cards you think your magic would be, I personally believe I would be a swords witch(air affinity).
Vivi and Scarlet were both awesome characters. It was great to see everything from both of their point of views. I loved the witch sorority and their sisterhood. The twists and turns in the book kept me interested in the book. I cannot wait to read the next one. Thank you Netgalley and RB Media for providing me a free copy of this arc audiobook in exchange for my honest review.
Vivi Deveraux wants to leave her vagabond lifestyle and mother for a chance to have a clean slate. Being accepted to Westerly College may just be the chance she has been waiting for and rushing Kappa Rho Nu may give her the portal to her past she never expected to need. The Ravens is Sabrina's witchcraft and sisterhood mixed with Pretty Little Liars drama. Paige brings the deep loyalties asked of sororities and the dangers of untrained magic to the college campus. The two main protagonists are flawed and strong but do lack some depth in history. While the plot does absorb readers into the power and drama, the characters lack a concrete foundation. Paige superficially explains the mother daughter dynamics between Scarlet and the women in her immediate family. exploring this dynamic could have added depth to the overall arch and been a powerful theme. One theme I struggle against is the relationship trope that seems to always overtake YA literature. Paige did a great job in displaying sisterhood and maturity, giving an ok balance of relationship between the sisters and male relationships (although I wish it was slightly skewed to the sister side).
I did not end up finishing this book. It read way too young for me and I was just finding myself rolling my eyes. I feel like it would make a fantastic TV Show! I just found that maybe my mid-twenties wasn't the targeted audience, and maybe more of a pre-teen would have really enjoyed it!
The Ravens (The Ravens #1) by Kass Morgan and Danielle Paige
Narrated by Sophie Amoss
Publisher: RB Media
Genre: Sci Fi & Fantasy | Teens & YA
Release Date: December 15, 2020
The Ravens is the first book in the new duology by Kass Morgan and Danielle Paige. The second book, The Monarchs, is anticipated to be released in 2022.
The Ravens is a thriller about a sorority house that is secretly a coven of powerful witches. The story is told from the perspective of Scarlett, who is driven and desires to be the sorority's president, and Vivi, who is looking for some stability & friendship.
The book is fast paced and has so many twists and turns, which kept the book so interesting.
The narration by Sophie Amoss was incredible! She did such a great job with this book.
Overall, I though this was a great book and enjoyed being kept in suspense until the very end. I look forward to the final book to be released because I need to know how things work out in the future!
I'm so grateful to Kass Morgan and Danielle Paige, RB Media, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this ARC audiobook in exchange for my honest review.
I gravitated towards this title because of the mention of witches. I mean who wouldn't want to read about a secret sorority of witches in college? Unfortunately this story didn't do it for me. There was too much going on in the story that didn't have much buildup. I wasn't given enough time to really get to know the characters or develop feelings for them.
3.5 Stars to this super engaging, witchy YA fantasy!
I listened to this on audio and thought that narrators did an absolutely fantastic job bringing this story to life. I feel like this age range of just starting college is really underrepresented and I loved getting to experience it through this book.
This follows a sorority house of witches keeping lots of dark secrets. I thought this had a great ominous tone while still feeling fun and engaging. This book was essentially a horror version of Greek and had me hooked from start to finish.
This had all the fun of a classic 90's horror movie - filled with moments where you'll find yourself yelling at the characters to not go into the dark woods alone. I had such a good time with this book and can't wait to get my hands on the sequel!
I love witches. I love magic systems. I love found family. I love stories set in schools. It’s just my guilty pleasure. This book was really good. I felt like there could have been more world building. A bit more descriptive with what my surroundings looked like... but for a character driven novel it was really enjoyable. The only other thing that was a bit off for me was the lack of magic throughout. I wanted MORE magic earlier. It grew. And it was worth it.
Thank you to NetGalley for a copy of The Ravens audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
I'm so happy I got to listen to this gothic tale. I especially loved the alternating POV's between Scarlett Winters and Vivi Deveraux. There's so much to love about this book, and the prose itself was especially captivating and drew me right in. I can't wait for the followup.
I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Ever since I knew The Ravens was going to be a book, I was instantly intrigued. I really wanted to get the ARC of it just so I could dive into those wonderful and mysterious pages. Luckily for me, I got the audio ARC and didn't hesitate (much) to dive into it.
In it, you will meet Vivi. She was kind of like Sabrina the Teenage witch.. but not really. Mostly because she didn't know that she was a witch or that she had powers. So, I guess.. Vivi is more like Harry Potter since he didn't know he was a wizard and thought it was completely normal for a glass to be missing and a snake slithering away from it's closure. Details.
Besides her, we get to know Scarlett.. who is a witch and ends up being Vivi's big in their witchy sorority. I'm not going to lie, Scarlett was a bitch for most of this book which can be a good or bad thing depending on your mood or the situation in the book. It was clear to me that her and Vivi weren't going to instantly connect or anything. So I was intrigued to see how that was going to be.
Then there's this mystery on top of it all. I had so many suspects for the bad guy and once it was revealed.. I kind of was like - okay, let's move on. Don't get me wrong, I liked the book and it was entertaining.. I just had a lot of questions forming in my mind while reading this. I'm hoping that I will get some answers in the next book.
This book was a little bit different than what I was expecting. It was quite a bit darker than what I normally read but I still really enjoyed it. I love books that center on witches so a sorority of witches sounded amazing, and it was!
This story has two POV Scarlett and Vivi. Scarlett is a legacy and she wants to be president of the sorority. Vivi is just trying to get away from her mother. Vivi had no idea she was a witch until she was recruited to be a raven.
I adore the idea behind this story. I think it was executed pretty well. I liked the characters. I feel like there could have been more development there but over I really just enjoyed the story.
I listened to the audiobook for this and the narration was perfect. The narrator set the perfect tone for the story.
I received an arc of this book from netgalley, I actually received an arc of the audiobook which was quite exciting.
However, I did not finish this book, I was able to listen to about 50% of it. That’s not necessarily bc this is a bad book.
This book has a lot of themes of sisterhood and American sororities and cattiness to some extent. One of the main characters is just entering university after moving around a lot and looking for a place to belong. The other is quite well off and has a lot of expectations placed on her. I did want to read this book to try something different I wouldn’t normally read. It turns out there’s a reason I don’t read books like this.
If any of these things I listed appeal to you this could be a very interesting book! But I found it all unappealing and quite taxing to go through.
In my mind I was trying to compare this book to AHS coven to make it more exciting to listen too. In same ways it is like coven except take away the horror and the humour...so just sorority really.
So yeah in the end I did not like this book and I will not finish it.
The audiobook was fun tho bc the reader does a lot of interesting southern accents which I never could’ve imagined on my own.
Thank you to RB Media and Netgalley for providing me with free audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
The perfect read for a gloomy weather , as i often listened the book during our long walks with my beloved husky....outside is crisp cold, without snow and darker from the clouds...and i can say that the narrator was magical (pun intended) and combined with the surrounding gloom was immersing me fully into the story.
A story about a coven of witches who hide their identity in plain sight as the prestigious sorority Kappa Rho Nu.
We follow the story from two point of views -
we have Vivi Deveraux who was oblivious to her powers and her whole world changes when she discovers she is a witch when she joins the sisterhood and begin to unravel her huge potential.
On the other hand we have the total opposite - the always impeccable, classy, legacy Raven and a future Kappu Rho Nu president - Scarlett Winters.
Everything seems normal - Vivi learning and proving herself as a pledge and Scarlet proving herself worthy to be the next leader of the coven....until things get a darker twist and dangerous for every Raven witch, because someone using a wicked magic is turning their life into nightmare...
Loved both of their characters ,Scarlet and Vivi's and they evolved a lot throughout the story and their relationship built up despite their polarity was interesting.
Although i would've loved to see more of the topic about how powerful Vivi is and see her unfurl her great potential, i suppose we'll see more of that in the second book as she becomes more experienced.
The two POV's complemented each other perfectly and fluidly and give you the fullest picture possible.
And is i said, the narrator was a huge part of the magic of this book, that you had no problem distinguish without a hint of a doubt wich character is talking and each one has his own vibe.
Altho a familiar trope it was absolutte pleasure of reading (in my case listening) this book.
I recieved an audiobook of this from netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The narrator of this book did an amazing job with doing a southern accent 👏 like I think I fell in love with the characters more just from the accent alone.
I started this on Christmas eve and couldn't put it down. I loved every part of this. The college life was done well, with the sorority being the priority. The magic in this was so fun to read about and as someone who loves realistic magic a lot I fell in love with the tarot deck and the simplicity of the magic. I really liked the mystery in the plot too. Kept me engaged and on my toes!
I really liked Vivi and Scarlett. They were total opposites which I really enjoyed. Scarlett believes her entire life is set out in stone. Become the president of the Ravens, finish college, marry her boyfriend and become a lawyer.
Vivi on the other hand just wants to stay in one place for a few years, have some indepence and freedom and find something she's passionate about. When Vivi decides to go to the Sorority's first party her life changes forever.
The mystery kept me on my toes. Who was doing horrible things to the sorority girls? Who is trying to get the girls outed as witches?
The characters had good character growth, especially Scarlett who redeemed herself by the end. Vivi also had a bit of character growth, showing her love for her sisters. But man did I hate how naive Vivi was throughout this. It infuriated me so freaking much, like I wanted to slap her for most of this book.
The ending took a turn that I enjoyed and I look forward to book 2. Hopefully illumicrate do a special edition of the monarchs!
When a coven of witches convene over mysterious circumstances at their sorority house, you're in for a college experience like no other. Both authors delivered on the concept but I would've enjoyed the book more if had centered the relationships of the sorors over romance. I also think Scarlett's storyline may have benefitted from some exploration of whether or not she was on a path she'd like to remain on - a genuine college crisis.
The Ravens is an atmospheric, magical, treasure of a book.
Vivi's is just trying to make friends at college when she decides to stop by a sorority party. Little does she know they're all witches, and so is she.
Scarlett is preparing herself to be the next sorority president. She'd be the perfect next leader for her sisters, as long as she can keep her skeletons hidden.
But nothing can stay a secret for long- not when dark magic is in the air, girls are going missing and bodies are turning up.
A novel about power and entitlement, but mostly sisterhood and the benefits of collaborative work, The Ravens sets off a little slow, but really picks up in the second half. With an almost entirely female cast- something I've been looking for more in novels lately- the concept and plot are intriguing enough to keep you turning pages. The way the magic system was built really made sense to me and had me wishing I could join them.
The audiobook is well-produced too. The narrator does a brilliant job of distinguishing all the girls, and I actually loved listening to her speak.
I really enjoyed this! Would definitely recommend for a magical, fun time.
Audiobook provided by Netgalley for an honest review.
So glad to be done with this book. I'm not one for audiobooks. I read faster than the narrator. I was absolutely intrigued by the plot. A sorority of witches is a fresh new story idea. However, the book dragged. The characters were very unlikable and I couldn't wait for it to end. This was just a no for me. I couldn't relate to any of the characters. I wanted to be kept in suspense and that sure didn't happen.
