Familial drama!
This was written in a dual timeline between Melody’s present and her childhood.
I thought the duality was well done and flowed nicely.
This was much more touching and emotional than I was expecting.
I was definitely expecting it to be more of a thriller, but it really wasn’t.
It was more about traumas and how we get passed those and how we move forward, regardless of the way we do so.
Life can be messy and we deal with it the best we can.

I received a free e-ARC copy through Netgalley.
A story about a woman who is hypnotized as an adult and then starts to remember bits and pieces of her childhood.
The story was interesting and had some bombshells, but I guess I was expecting them to be bigger bombshells if that makes sense. All the back and forth leaps in time was a bit annoying too right as I'm getting into a character's story.

I wasn't underwhelmed or overwhelmed by this book. I like Lisa Jewell's writing a found the novel to be a solid read. I always recommend her books due to her writing and characters. It was just missing something for me.

Another great book by Lisa Jewell. When Melody wakes up after a house fire she has no recollection of her life before the age of 9. Her parents are there making sure she is not injured or hurt. Melody goes on with her life. As her son is on the verge of becoming an adult. and Melody tries her hand at dating she suddenly is starting to have flashes of a life and little things start triggering bigger things.
This is a very well written book, just when I thought I had it figured out I read another chapter and realized I had not. This book will be recommended to others and possible the book club.

Very well developed characters and an extremely engaging story. Well thought out and very suspenseful story line that keeps the reader guessing until the final twist! This is the book to read this year! Highly recommended!

You know, this isn’t an earth-shattering literary masterpiece but it’s a darn good story. I love how the author develops her characters over time and grips you in to loving them, warts and all. It’s so relevant right now to grab hold of things that make you feel. Melody’s story isn’t that far fetched- many people grow up thinking their parents/childhood was one thing, only to have their world rocked by the revealing of secrets from the past. My husband is one of those. Such a good reminder of the effects our actions have on our children and how the judging of others and gossip is often way off the mark from the truth. Very pleased with how everything ended, especially with Ken!

A sad story with a happy ending. Melody is worried she isn’t who she thought she was after seeing a hypnotist. Following a fatal fire, what really happened to Melody? Can she find out the truth, or is her fragmented momory to damaged to be reliable?

I have always enjoyed Lisa Jewell's books and this one was no exception. Though a sad story, I appreciated the happy ending. Loved the writing style and how the story flashed back to Melody's (sad) childhood. My one criticism was that when we heard from 'childhood Melody', her thoughts and words seemed to be from a much older child than her age in the book (if that even makes sense). Overall, a quick read....could not put it down once I started reading. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy.

Melody was nine when her house caught on fire and she was brought to safety by her parents. At fifteen she left thinking she didn’t fit with them, became pregnant, and never looked back. Now that her son is about to turn 18 Melody feeling at loose ends, goes with a date to a famous hypnotist, but when he hypnotizes her she inexplicably faints. Immediately Melody feels different as she starts experiencing memory flashbacks of her childhood which is strange because previously she has no memories of her life at all before the fire.
Trying to piece together her life she starts by visiting important places and people as more and more memories start coming through until Melody realizes she isn’t who she thought at all. But then who is she?
A clever and unusual plot but I found the book to be too sad and depressing as the various adults in her life were so screwed up this poor little girl was left to flounder alone.

Melody is a single mum with a teenaged son living in London. One day, as a lark, she sees a hypnotist, and passes out during the show. When she comes to, she’s assailed with memories of her childhood. Memories of a time before the fire that burned her childhood home and all her possessions to the ground. Until now, her memories began after the fateful fire, but now she begins a journey across England to uncover the truth about her childhood. Emotional and touching
