The Dinner Guest had me on the edge.of.my.SEAT. It was wonderfully paced and full of secrets, twists, and lies! I really enjoyed the build up to the twist. Overall, I enjoyed this read and would recommend it for anyone looking for a bit of a thrill with added twists, turns, lies secrets and murder!
I already 'paid' for this book -- I have a copy -- as I did not hear from anyone --
so I won't download this copy -- (I don't need two copies)
I'll review it on goodreads an amazon once I read it.
Thank you.
Many great reviews and sounds great.... I'll look forward to my turn reading it soon!
From the blurb, I visualised a locked room mystery. However, this is domestic noir rather than a cosy murder mystery. It begins with a death at a dinner party, but that is just the start. Told from two viewpoints in dual timelines with an intriguing mix of backstory and flashbacks, the reader soon realises there is little to like in any of the characters, and nothing is what it superficially appears to be.
The twisty plot keeps its secrets until the final reveal, which makes this addictive, claustrophobic and intense reading.
I received a copy of this book from One More Chapter via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
A full of suspense thriller with a hell of a plot! A twisty fast paced story. Charlie, Matthew and their adopted son Titus sit down to have dinner with their invited guest Rachel in which Matthew met at a book store. Rachel then joins his book club. Matthew ends up stabbed to death at the diner table and Rachel is the one with the knife. She then calls the cops and confesses to the murder. But the question is is why did she do it!? What made this woman commit cold blooded murder?! Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the advance ecopy.
This book kept you guessing right till the very end! I really enjoyed reading it and couldn't put it down
Married couple, Charlie and Mathew, are raising their son amid comfortable, moneyed London and they are happy. Here comes Rachel, a nobody from nowhere Yorkshire, who worms her way into their lives and their set. There is a murder, there are lies, class snobbery, drugs, betrayals, death and surprises. Oh, Barnaby (the B of the B.P.) you are such a tease. You drop tantalizing tidbits here, there, and everywhere that force one to turn the page.
This one was well worth the wait and well worth the read! My head was spinning with "what if's" from the beginning and throughout, which is just what I want in a suspenseful thriller! I highly recommend not reading more than what's above before you jump into the novel because the less you know, the more fun it is. There is some back and forth timelines if that's not your thing (which normally isn't mine), but it worked well here!
Really liked this thriller, very easy to read, and a modern whodunit.
The opening statement can't help but spur you to read on and find out what has happened.
The characters are well rounded, and I flip-flopped as to who done it. If you live in London, the street names and areas would be an added bonus I'm sure.
Finished it in a couple of sittings, would recommend
I wanted to love this one I really did. But it was awful. The main character was such a pretentious a**. The story itself was extremely slow moving and a bit dull.
I think the marketing failed this story a bit, they dinner guest isnt even a main factor in the overall book and story.

I loved this book a brilliant thriller I loved. Plenty of plots and suspense to keep you guessing till the end. I enjoyed the book the characters were amazing. The writing style was cleverly done. I definitely read more from the author other books. In the future. I love these dark dinner mystery books I enjoy them. I think everyone should read this book.
The ingredients were there for suspense and danger and there was an element of real creepiness with what Rachel was up to, but I guessed very early on who she was. The outcome was a bit lame I thought, and much of it predictable. Titus's behaviour came from nowhere and was very out of character with no real explanation. The privileged behaviour displayed throughout was excessive and didn't contribute to the story. I enjoyed the read, but just felt there was something missing that prevented me engaging fully. #netgalley #thedinnerguest
This book was a page turner from beginning to end. I literally couldn’t put this book down and finished in one reading. A woman shows up in their lives out of no where and makes herself at home. But why isn’t she being welcomed with open arms? Then there is a death. Who is really behind everything? This was a page turner until the literal last page. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
3.5 stars! This book started off so strong for me but I didn’t find the last third of it quite as engrossing and I didn’t love the ending. However, it’s definitely a page turner that keeps you guessing. I’d never heard of the author until now so I’ll be interested to check out his other books. Thanks so much to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK for the free copy in exchange for my honest review!
This ingeniously paced and devilishly plotted domestic thriller starts off around the dinner table with one character dead and another holding the bloody knife. You have Matthew, the perfect husband; Titus, the perfect son; Rachel, the perfect stranger; and Charlie, the perfect enigma. If you think I’m going to reveal who’s who, think again.
As the story is told through two of their perspectives, jumping from before the murder to after, the reader is put through their paces trying to fit together all the pieces of this puzzle box.
As far as any more story details go, the less said the better. This is one dinner party you won’t want to miss!
O gosh where to start I was hooked from the first page. There were points when I had to make dinner but really didn’t want to put the book down I was so hooked. What a great twisty book.
I can not wait to read more of your books!
I don't remember the last time I was so intrigued after only reading the first page of a novel. The impact of the first statements really stuck with me as I read through the rest of the story - it was bold, unapologetic and shocking.
The thing I enjoyed the most was the way absolutely everything about this book was unexpected - from the initial murder, the unusual (love to hate) characters, the revelations and the way the story concluded.
The way the narrative was split between the murder and the events of the past year building up towards that day was compelling and addictive. The fragmented pieces of information and the uncertainty about what occurred was just brilliant to read.
This is the first book I have read by the author, but it definitely won't be the last. The Dinner Guest is one of the most fresh and interesting psychological thrillers I have read in a long time!
Once again B P Walter has written a book that I have enjoyed. I enjoyed all the red herrings but also the red flags throughout. There was a certain element of the final outcome that I sort of guessed but even still, I was wrong. I thought it was great opening the book with the big event but not knowing who did it or why it happened!
There was also a couple of B P Walter easter eggs throughout the book that were little throwbacks to A Version of the Truth which I loved. Even though they’re not huge links it was nice to notice those little cameo moments.
I would definitely recommend this to any thriller fans who want to have a bit of a puzzle on their hands!
This book had me gripped and I read it quite quickly! The book switches between Charlie and Rachel's POV which keeps it interesting. None of the characters were particularly likeable, but that worked in its favour as you weren't sure who to trust. There were a lot of twists at the end, which I did find shocking! I'm giving it 4 stars as some of it did seem a bit far fetched and unrealistic, but overall a good read.
Intriguing story. I agree with the other reviewers, this one is best going in blind and not knowing too much about the plot. You know from the beginning that someone is killed and someone takes the blame. What you don't know is--who actually committed the murder (was it a murder?) and why?
There are secrets galore, people lying to each other, and very unclear motives for many different things. At certain points I thought I knew what was going on, but I was wrong for most of it! I liked how well the twists unfolded and how deliberately the reader is provided with clues at just the right time. Most of the book is told alternating between Charlie's and Rachel's points of view and we get alternate sides of the same situation in many cases.
The only quibble I have about this book is the very end. I thought it went a step too far and I would have liked it to turn out differently. It reminded me of The Couple Next Door when I thought the author should have just left well enough alone at the end.
Ending(view spoiler)
All in all this is a great twisty suspense novel, recommended.
This book kept me guessing throughout. I had an inkling as to who the culprit could be but this book took you on a real journey among some really unlikeable and detestable characters and others like Charlie's ex boyfriend and also his godmother who I really liked and who I would have loved to see more of.
This book serves as a reminder that secrets will come out at some point and your past sins can come back to haunt you.
A book that I couldn't put down. Will definitely be reading more from the author.
