After hearing so much hype around this book, I was so keen to read it. The plot sounded fantastic, the cover really makes you wanna pick up the book. But overall I found it quite disappointing. The ending was frustrating and quite unrealistic. Not my favourite sadly
A refreshing new look at relationships ans families, this thriller will do away with your preconceived notions of societal norms. Told in two timelines and from the point of view of Charlie, an Instagrammer who husband is murdered at the beginning of the book, and Rachel, the mysterious addition to their bookclub, this is a fast-paced page-turner populated by intriguing characters.
What I liked: the unusual way in which the story was told, the normalisation of a gay couple, Charlie's Machiavellian father.
What could have been improved: the reveal at the end was a bit long-winded.
Verdict: extremely enjoyable.
I received the e-ARC for this book after publication date and am sorry to say that I really didn't like it. I DNFd it at 28%. The characters were badly drawn and lacking in any depth and the plot was too contrived.
This is a fantastic thriller, the best I’ve read this year! The story begins with a murder, Charlie’s husband has been stabbed and Rachel, a family friend is holding the knife and dials 999. What follows is a maze of incredibly well thought through back stories all explaining the lead up to this movement. There are multiple twists and the plot is genuinely hard to fathom, I changed my mind several times during reading. The characters are all fantastically written and developed well, the story arc keeps you gripped to the last page.
Thanks you Net Galley for my copy of this book
Firstly a big thank you to the publishers for my copy to review on netgalley. I have really enjoyed his previous books especially his debut. So I was looking forward to reading this .
I raced through this and it completely exceeded my expectations. It is a phenomenal read!
Written in alternate narratives and timeliness , we know the what and who but we have to discover the how and why.
Who is this Rachel that’s appeared in their lives and seems to be making herself very comfortable. Is she an ally or foe? Can she be trusted?
Are people ever who do they appear to be and what they capture om Instagram …is it real life? Is Charlie really living his best life ??
An exciting, thrilling cleverly written well plotted thriller . Packed with suspense and twists and turns .
Published 1st April and I highly recommend.
Damn I wasn't expecting this to be as good as it was I liked the synopsis but I was afraid it would kind of disappoint but wow there was plenty of suspense and twists. I couldn't stop turning the page.
The red herrings will more than likely trick you up and I really loved that!
I was very interested from start to finish. I really think is one that many people are going to love and be on their edge of the seat reading even tho the story is over all quite simple.
But wow. Well written and captivating.
I love the alternating POVs and working out everyone's motives and figuring out what's true and who's the killer was really great
I recommend very highly
Dinner guest by B P Walter is domestic thriller opening with a bloody murder.
As Matthew with his husband Charlie and son Titus sit down for dinner he is fatality stabbed, Rachel appears and takes the knife and the blame as she phones the police.
The real culprit is fairly obvious but you aren't told untilll much later, the real mystery here is why? And why has Rachel taken the blame for it?
In a story that flits between perspectives we learn about the characters backgrounds, and the hints are dropped as to motives for the crime. None of the characters are relatable as they don't seem to work, yet have lavish lifestyles and mix with aristocracy, having the PM round for Christmas drinks is just something I've never done! I think Rachel was supposed to be the commoner coming in to make us think it's real, however within weeks she's living in a plush flat in Knightsbridge with no bills (not in the real world!)
The plot is clever, linking all the elements together to get to the truth is complicated yet belivable. With the story being told from different time points as well as perspectives you get a sense of pace, the short chapters giving you a little snippet before you swap scene helping to build the suspense.
Overall I give this 3.5* when reading I was thinking a 3 but the ending was more interesting!
Thanks to NetGalley and One More Chapter for the ARC
This one hit middle of the road for me - on the one hand, I felt like I wanted to read it all in one sitting just to get answers, but at the same time, it felt like there were a lot of misses with developing characters and the dialogue.
I was thrilled to receive a copy of The Dinner Guest after seeing so many glowing early reviews, and I was not disappointed!
We open with a macabre scene-someone’s husband has been stabbed and killed at the dinner table. Another dinner guest has called the police and promptly confesses to the killing, but the other two people in the kitchen are not behaving quite as a grieving family should.
While we are transported back and forth in time and different POVs, this is a deliciously twisty read that left me uneasy at the end of each chapter and unable to put it down!
As you may have noticed, I am a SUCKER for great imagery and fleshed out settings, and BP Walter delivers in spades!
I received a copy of #TheDinnerGuest courtesy of #Netgalley and #OneMoreChapter in exchange for an honest review
Psychological thrillers are my favourite genre so I was really pleased to have my request approved to read this on NetGalley (even though the publication date had passed.)
I was immediately gripped by this book and thrown into the lives of Matthew, Charlie and their fourteen year old son Titus. From the beginning you know that Matthew was murdered whilst having a family dinner but you don't know who did it or why.
The story is narrated by Charlie and Rachel (the only other person at the murder scene) and flits from 12 months before the murder to the days and weeks that followed. Gradually you find out how Rachel becomes involved in their lives and what makes one of the people at the dinner commit murder.
This is a story full of mystery and suspense and I was desperate to keep reading to find out more about the characters lives. Just when you think you know what happened some new information about the past is revealed and you realise you were completley wrong! I was very surprised by the last part of the book and there were several big twists which I hadn't predicted at all!
I love it when a book keeps me up late because I just need to read one more chapter and this is exactly what 'The Dinner Guest' did! This is the first book I have read by this author so I'm looking forward to reading his previous two books.
Thank you to NetGalley and One More Chapter/Harper Collins UK for this ecopy.
I loved this book! It was so intriguing, I couldn’t guess what was happening and I didn’t want to stop reading until I found out. The characters were all brilliant, so interesting, and the ending was great.
This is the first book I’ve read by B P Walter and it most definitely won’t be the last. I love his writing style - I was hooked from beginning until end. I’m off to download more books from this fantastic author.
This was a really good thriller - not your usual fare and the characterisation and the way the book was laid out was both gripping and clever. I was completely swept up in the story and couldn't put it down! Very good indeed; I recommend!
I have never read any books by B.P. Walter but this was an excellent book so I think I have found a new author to follow.
The characters were well written and full of depth and I loved the flow of the plot. A must read for anyone who likes thrillers!
The Dinner Guest is a fantastic twisty closed room thriller that I really enjoyed.
Four people walked into the dining room that night. One would never leave.
Matthew: the perfect husband.
Titus: the perfect son.
Charlie: the perfect illusion.
Rachel: the perfect stranger.
Charlie didn’t want her at the book club. Matthew wouldn’t listen.
And that’s how Charlie finds himself slumped beside his husband’s body, their son sitting silently at the dinner table, while Rachel calls 999, the bloody knife still gripped in her hand.
A fantastic twisty thriller written in multiple point of view.
Highly recommend!
Am I allowed to swear? Because holy sh*t this was excellent.
I do love a good thriller, and despite a 3500 word essay deadline looming, I could not put The Dinner Guest down!
You start with the murder, and the dinner guest, bloody knife in hand, before heading back in time to examine the motives. Why them, why now?
As cracks start to show in the lives of the characters you think you’re edging ever closer to knowing everything and then…. nope! You actually only know a little bit because something else just happened – there are some seriously excellent plot twists wrapped up between the covers of this book.
I’ve got to say, if you read just one thriller this year, make it this one!
4.5 stars
This was the first time I read something by B.P. Walter and well what a nice surprise.
A psychological thriller at it's best!
Bit by bit you get to know the characters as well as their past.
It starts of with a big bang, so you know from the first lines, that somebody got murdered. But to find out about the reasons behind this hole situation makes this story a perfect read.
I honestly could not figure out what was going on!
Thanks a lot #NetGalley #HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter for this great ARC
This was a struggle for me at the end of the book I just didn't care anymore. I had to push myself to keep reading. Its far to slow for me, at the end you finally get some plottwists but not it didn't please me. it is well written and people who like slow thrillers with a mystery element will really enjoy this. It was just not for me and I didn't care for the characters.
They are the perfect family: Charlie, his husband Matthew, and their perfect son Titus. Until, Rachel a stranger who befriends the family, shows up and things take a very crazy and shocking turn.
Everything comes to a head, when these four people are all in the same room, but only three remain alive. Who is the killer and why?
I love a good whodunnit mystery, I love piecing together clues and trying to figure out if I can reach the correct conclusion before the end. It’s almost like a little game, “can I figure out the killer.”
The moment this book started, I was hooked! I loved the way the author immediately gives you a slight clue, but no more information. It’s infuriating, but in a good way. The way this story is written, the bits of information given, but only enough to keep you wanting more, is incredibly smart. Especially for this type of story.
The characters are so interesting. I never knew who to trust, I never knew which character was telling the truth, and I never knew what kind of intentions any of them had.
This is a perfectly constructed whodunnit, in my opinion. Not only is it a great construction, it’s just plain fun to read. I was explaining everything to my partner and running all my theories by him to see if he saw anything I couldn’t. It was really a whole process for me, I was trying very hard to try and put everything together before it was all revealed. I personally did not see the ending coming, which I was very happy about.
I seriously had so much fun while reading this story, it was awesome and I loved it.
I can’t wait to read more from this author!
I’m definitely in the minority with my 2 star rating but this story fell flat for me and I could not connect with any of the characters. Just not for me. DNF at 51%. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my review.
I really liked reading a mistery book with a gay protagonist, it's not so usual nowadays and it was a great surprise. The mistery is really good and I couldn't stop reading to know who was the murderer, well done!
