This author definitely had a firm command and power for utilizing language in the prose of these unique tidbits and stories. The relationship between communication, language, and intended recipient is often the source of the parallel with both human and animal characters characters. There is a substantial and academic feel to the stories, however with a humanistic approach. I think that each reader will get something different and unique from these stories as it is experimental and captures moments in time. I am definitely interested in reading more from this author. I feel that she has a unique perspective and offers something that is altruistically original. Thanks for the ARC, NetGalley.
I was blown away by Eley Williams' last book, Liar's Dictionary. So I jumped at the chance to read Attrib and Other Stories. But I just couldn't connect to this one. And I gave it the good college try on several occasions. Overall, this was a big miss for me.
Sorry to be a downer. But thank you for the advanced reader copy via the NetGalley app.
Eley Williams brings just as much wit and wordplay to Attrib. and Other Stories as she did to Liar's Dictionary....and I didn't think she could top Liar's Dictionary! Each story is short and sweet, and subtly threaded together by attention to detail and love for the written word. While some made me laugh, others made me cry, and still, they all made me think and further question our relationship to words and how or if we can move forward without them.
I was very attracted to this cover & Eley Williams' books have great covers all around.
This is a collection of stories that focuses on details - colors explained vividly and creatively, and words that you've never heard of. Each story focuses on an emotional peak of every day life.
While I'm not upset I've read it, I didn't care for this collection too much.
Thank you to netgalley & the publisher for this arc.
