I have never seen organza embroidery before but I fell in love with it when I got this book. It was just so beautiful and unique that I couldn't help but be inspired to try this technique myself. I loved to embroider as a teenager but this takes it to a whole new level.
The instructions are very detailed and well laid out. There are several project patterns and I found many that I would love to make.
If you're interested in this type of craft, give it a try. I think you'll like it as much as I do!
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review. All opinions are my own.
Unfortunately I could not read this book. The only version of the book I could get to load at all was the kindle file, and none of the pictures loaded. I attempted many times on multiple devices, multiple browsers, etc, but to no avail. Owing to technical difficulties I am forced to provide a non-review and this feedback to the publishers: please consider testing your file formats.
Some cute, simplistic designs of surface embroidery done on organza. Unfortunately, the author offers quite a number of counterproductive tips and fails to explain basic elements of set-up and technique that makes me think they are self taught (or youtube). Designs are ok, not recommended if you actually need to learn any of these techniques.
I enjoyed the colorful pictures! There is great discussion and details about the medium used for the needlepoint and several project ideas. The step-by-step guides for different stitches include extremely helpful pictures. This book will help any needlepoint enthusiast take their projects to the next level.
I have quite a few embroidery books but none on embroidering organza. This was a visually stunning book. The book starts with tools needed and is then followed by instructions for how to complete the stitches needed in the projects. There are many step by step projects using progress photos of the actual work. The instructions are clear and the pictures are so helpful. I will be working my way through these projects.
I liked all of the projects in this book. My one complaint is that the book states these projects are very easy but in my experience, these are not for beginners. I think that the projects should be set up in order of difficulty and the reader should be encouraged to do a few test hoops before jumping into a hard project.
The book is divided into 3 chapters with over 10 projects and a thread colour conversion chart. It’s a really gorgeous book to read and the projects are colourful and inspiring. The author gives a thorough introduction to the subject, going through all the tools and materials you will need and includes tips she has picked up on the way. I also enjoyed the chapter featuring the most common embroidery stitches, some of which were new to me. The stitches are illustrated with clear photos which I found really useful.
The projects range from ladybugs to goldfish, toadstools to cactus and flower. The organza gives an amazing background to the embroidery and really helps them to stand out. Each pattern is laid out with the supplies you need as well as the stitches required. This is a great way to ensure you have all the materials you need as well as the necessary skills (you can refer back to Chapter 2 if you need help!). Then you can work your way through each step to create something beautiful!
My favourite project has to be the pretty floral wreath featuring four different flowers. I’m wondering if I can add this to my embroidery wish list, as you can never really have too many embroidery projects!
I saw this book and was fascinated because I’ve never seen embroidery on organza. As a newbie embroiderer, I was even more fascinated because it looks absolutely stunning. The opening introduces us to everything we need to know about stitching on organza. One of the most important things is the fabric. Sarah thoroughly explains what to look for in organza as well as what she likes to use. Then she continues to set us up for success by giving us some tips that will make the process easier on ourselves, such as stitching over a bright surface and avoid making knots. One of the most important pieces of advice is to practice and that not even her first piece on organza was perfect. It's good to remind people that it takes practice even if you’re skilled when working with other fabrics.
One of the things that I like about this book is that it goes through everything you need to embroider, so it’s perfect for people who have never embroidered before. There’s a pretty nice stitch glossary in addition to a list of supplies and why you’ll need them for your organza pieces. I also think that it’s nice that the stitch glossary shows a step-by-step process of each stitch on organza, which is great because I’ve never stitched on it before and it’s great to get a visual on what to expect the process to look like.
There are 12 patterns included, which each have instructions as well as tips to aid reader’s stitching. I also like that there’s photos showing a bit of the process for each pattern with instructions on the type of stitches used for the section of the pattern shown in the pictures. I think this is a great book and I’m inspired to pick up some organza the next time I’m at the fabric store so I can give this a go.
This is a well laid out book with some great information in it. It's a little more on the very beginners side and some of the projects in it are a little rudimentary, but I think there is something for everybody in this book. The author was very thorough with their descriptions of stitches and techniques and offered comprehensive step-by-step photos for the visual learner. Overall, I'm a fan.
As a crafter, I've been fascinated by the recent trend of embroidering onto organza. Covering notions, fabric choices, stitch guides and including pattern templates for the projects, this book is a clear, detailed guide to creating the popular stitchworks.
The projects were all laid out in an easy to follow manner, which is perfect for the beginner embroiderer, and I can't wait to get started on some of them!
*Many thanks to Netgalley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
This book is a perfect guide for beginners who want to try embroidery.
The author has given clear instructions and the accompanying pictures are so helpful. And there's even a colour guide at the end!
I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook. I love cross stitching and I am now getting into embroidery! Beautiful pieces I can't wait to try these as picture art, pillow cases and other means.
embroidery on organza makes the stitching appear to be floating in the hoop. absolutely beautiful. i can't wait to try out some of my own designs.
Beautiful book with clear instructions and charming patterns to follow! Organza may not be a good material for beginners, but Godfrey's directions are so clear, that it would be safe to follow on a different material first, before delving into Organza
Organza Hoop Art is a tutorial guide for surface embroidery on sheer ground fabric by Sarah Godfrey. Released 20th April 2021 by Fox Chapel on their Landauer imprint, it's 96 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats.
This is a well written and exuberantly illustrated book with a good primer on basic surface embroidery techniques and 12 step by step project tutorials. The projects are all framed in hoops, but could easily be adapted to other uses such as embellishments for tulle overlays on clothing, lampshades, stumpwork, or other applications. The author includes an introductory chapter which gives a good overview of tools, beginning techniques, and materials. Following the introduction is a really well done tutorial chapter with the different stitches used for the patterns in the book. The step-by-step photos are annotated and accompanied by explanatory text. They're clear and easy to follow.
The final half of the book contains the patterns for the elements listed in the catalogue at the beginning. They are mostly natural elements (ladybugs, goldfish, sun, florals) which can be individualized in terms of color and arranged as desired. There are no links or retailers included in the book, however all the materials will be easily accessible at nearly any large retailer or craft shop. The author has included color conversion charts for Anchor and DMC flosses.
I enjoyed the book very much. It's a worthwhile and fun introduction and guide to learning embroidery. Many of the designs in the book could also serve as a good jumping off point for dimensional embroider/stumpwork.
Four and a half stars
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
What a cute and easy to use book for hoop embroidery! I am very new to this hobby but I really enjoyed reading through the different techniques and examples
I'm new to embroidery and this book couldn't have come in a better time! I just love the motifs covered in it and I can't wait to try some of them out! I think I'm starting to develop a thing for crafts books and this one is already among my favorites. I might even have to get a copy to have it in front of my while I learn a new skill!
I'm self-taught at embroidery and wished I had this book when I started! It explains amazingly well all the ups and downs of embroidery and gives you amazing ideas.
Cute designs, but not very versatile because its always in the hoop. Great I guess if you have a whole heap of hoops that you want to use up but not many people do. Then you have an ugly hoop on the wall displaying your nice work. Limiting.
I have always wanted to try embroidery on organza, but never had the courage to step over from normal embroidery simply because I didn't know where to begin. Organza Hoop Art is a perfect guide for beginners who want to give embroidery on organza a try! It provides clear and detailed instructions on how to create amazing organza art. I would definitely get a hard copy of this when it comes out.
