I like the illustrations but the story was quite bizarre. I don't think kids can learn something new.
At first I thought it was strange that this book had a similar title to a series my students like. Then I read it and I was excited to see that it is an updated version. Still has the repetitive story that builds on the previous page. Beautiful illustrations. Will be a favorite with kids.
This retelling of the classic, “I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly” has easily become a new family favorite. Its alternative, age-appropriate-ending will have caregivers reading this again and again. Brightly colored and humorous illustrations will keep children of all ages engaged and giggling throughout this classic tale.
Pairs nicely with: fruit punch
Child Review: "I like it! (Giggles) She ate a dog in it!!"

"I Know an Old Lady" was a beloved story and song from my childhood. In Kindergarten back in the 70s I purchased a book that came with a recording of the song sung by Burl Ives and it quickly became a favorite. I understand the desire to update the book from the original ending but given how the original captured my imagination as a child, it is a bit bittersweet to me. This version is a cute update with equally cute animations. The four year old I read this to giggled appropriately and enjoyed looking at the pictures, especially once she swallowed the dog. It's a nice new version of a very old story.
I Know an Old Lady by Edward Miller is yet another version of the classic children's nonsense rhyme. This book starts with a woman swallowing a fly (who knows why) and tells how she swallows increasingly larger animals to catch the item she swallowed beforehand. It is pure silliness. I have read versions of this rhyme out loud many times in my classroom. They are absolutely silly, but the students usually laugh as the old lady swallows more and more and becomes bigger and bigger. There is nothing particularly new about this book, but it is cute and funny.
We absolutely loved the illustrations in this retelling of a well-known classic. Have to say, parent wise, I was glad to see a less grim ending to read to my 4 year old.
I did feel like there were some issues with the rhythm and we had a few moments of stumbling feeling like it was lacking something.
Overall though, it is a delightful addition to a children's bookshelf.
An interesting spin to the old classic children's song of the same name, I Know An Old Lady features the already known story about an old lady who swallows a fly and keeps on swallowing animals 'til she's dead.
Only here, the author changes all the lines that are about her dying (for example, the "I don't know why she swallowed a fly, I guess she'll die" becomes "I don't know why she swallowed a fly, I'd rather eat pie" as well as her end. In this, she doesn't die when she tries to swallow a horse, instead, she decides that she will not eat it because she is already stuffed.
It was a fun and quick read, I will give it that.
And it also made me look up the original whose existance I ignored 'til now.
But I don't think it's anything groundbreaking, even though the little ones still might enjoy it!
Beautifully illustrated, updated popular children's book.. I enjoyed reading this to my grandson and also would have liked to share with my preschool classroom when I was still teaching. Thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for sharing.
Based on an old nursery rhyme / fairy tale, this old lady swallows a fly and then has to swallow all sorts of other things in an attempt to undo that one mistake! It's adorable and silly!
While some children may worry about the live animals she swallows, even the youngest can be reassured that they're being sent in there to chase out the others, so they'll all leave eventually - or simply tell them that it's not possible and just a lot of fun silliness.
The illustrations are adorable and hilarious, and the way they work with three-dimensional cutouts to show the contents of her stomach should make it even more fun for kids. Great story retelling for young children.
What a fun read! An updated version to the original story, although the old lady definitely can't swallow all those animals, it's fun reading! The illustrations are beautiful. Helps explain the food chain in the animal world, and it ends on a positive note.
Will definitely share in my next storytime with the littles!
Thank you, NetGalley, for an copy of this ebook in exchange for my opinion.
A lovely book telling the traditional song about a lady who swallows...a lot! Appealing illustrations. Loved it.
My kids and I enjoy this series so much, so we were super excited to read this! How much more the old lady swallow? It’s fun to see my kid’s expressions and they just want more! We will be reading this one again at bed time. Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for a gifted copy. This is my honest review.
I’ve always loved this story and have read versions of it numerous times to my pre-school class.
Children LOVE I Know an Old Lady!
I haven’t read one version they have not liked and asked me to read again and again. Children enjoy books with lots of silliness going on.
I really liked that it didn’t have the classic ending of “I guess she”lll die.”
The illustrations are very nice.
Loved the flow of the rhyming.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own.
Wonderful illustrations! For those who love other "There Was an Old Lady" books. I enjoy having these books on my classroom shelves. The kids never get tired of guessing what she'll swallow next.
With hilarious pictures, this storybook shares an old rhyme in a way that will catch many children's attention.
I voluntarily received and reviewed a complimentary e/copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
A welcome addition to the traditional "I Know An Old Lady" song-story, this version combines attractive, cartoon illustrations with - mostly - traditional text. The funny, rhyming phrases that replace the usual "Perhaps she'll die" verse endings create a more lighthearted take on this silly story. An increasingly large cutout on each page lets children see the growing collection of animals in the old lady's belly. This one will soon be a storytime favorite!
This book was the retold story that every kid should know, it is the funniest poem where the old lady swallows all these things one after the other. Each one is swallowed to go after the previous one for an odd reason. But the kids love this story over and over for years I have read this book to my kindergarten students and they love it. This is a book i will purchase for my library at school for the students to check out, I will also purchase a copy for my grandkids at home for me to read to them as I love this story. The illustrations in this book are colorful and perfect for the story. Thank you for the early copy for view.
It is a funny story. This all only makes sense as I saw in a clever youtube video that all these animals are made of chocolate. Must be Halloween Candy. The encore like the chicken licken , sky is falling where a character meets new characters on each page makes for a fun read for kids to recall the order in which things happened. Its fun too when there's some food chain theme involved.
I've always quite loved this story, it's fun to say, it's fun to listen and it's fun to look at the great pictures. Kids love it and as an adult I also love it still. I recommend!
Thank you to #netgalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
This is a fun book that starts as the old lady swallows a fly. We never find out why she truly swallowed the fly, but she continues through the book to swallow other animals to take care of the one before it. This book has a lot of repetition and rhyming and keeps the reader/listener wondering what is coming next. A nice quick read for all ages.
