We don't always know why God allows things to happen but He always has a purpose.
Gideon and Fern have known each other since they were able to walk. Unbeknownst they do not know how the other feels. Growing up Amish and their families working at the same market stand, they saw each other frequently and have grown a fondness to each other but for different reasons have put a wall up on their true feelings. Gideon has put a weight on his shoulders since his brothers death. Gideon and his family are now supporting Nettie and their children. Gideon has even taken over the stand his brother Thomas was managing and now learning the debt his brother had accululmated.
Fern is following the steps of her grandmother who was a fine baker and selling at the stand. She had her own dreams of going into the mission field, however, with her brother's lack of faith, her family encouraged her brother Aaron to take her place into missions to strengthen his faith.
Fern and Gideon are now confronted with another faith issue when the stand they are operating puts a wrench in their way of life. Together they overcome the obstacles and with the help of friends discover each other all over again.
What I loved about their story is the relational aspect of friends and family. Gideon with his strong character of making things right. Fern trusting in helping Gideon no matter the cost. They both had lessons of faith to learn in integrity and where strength comes from.
A special thank you to Kensington Books and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review
An interesting story with a bit of mystery, faith and love. Another good story by author Rachel J. Good.
I received a complimentary copy of the book. No review was required.
Sweet story. It started to get long in areas and I was ready for the love to get moving! A clean, fun, romantic fiction.
A very well written Amish romance. Very good plot and character development. I look forward to reading more books in this new series. I received an advance ebook from the publisher and Netgalley and this is my unbiased review.
Fern Blauch and Gideon Hartzler find themselves ‘surprised by love’ in this new series appropriately titled. When Fern and others at the Valley Green Farmer’s Market find themselves evicted from their stands in the market, an unknown benefactor provides a temporary reprieve. When Fern discovers the benefactor is her longtime crush, Gideon, she is determined to repay him. As they work closely side-by-side and their attraction to each other grows, family responsibilities keep them trying hard to hide their feelings. Along with the element of romance, the story also has an element of suspense. Will Fern’s and Gideon’s faith deepen along with their feelings for each other? Let go and let God is a lesson they need to learn.
I received a copy from Net Galley. The opinions are my own.
This is an easy and fast paced read. I feel in love with the characters and was silently cheering for the main character, who seemed oblivious to the obvious going ons in her life. I have never read a book by Rachel that I did not like. The story has the undertones of today's issues and problems that some of us have witnessed first hand. People taking advantage of others and doing the easy thing, not the right thins.
I truly did enjoy this book by Ms. Good. The characters were very well developed with depth and diversity. However, this book was extremely slow moving. It was slow moving to the point that it felt beyond unrealistic. The author made Fern and Gideon far too dense, and this created a feeling that they did not come off as intelligent as they had to truly have been. Their feelings, thoughts, and confusions were just described to a ridiculous level of depth that made the book hard to continue reading. I didn't feel like they were ever going to get even the slightest bit of a clue about each others feelings.
However, the many other characters around them added a great deal of humor, emotion, and depth that kept me reading. I don't believe that Ms. Good needed to make these too main characters so incredibly hard to get in order create what I can only imagine to be a layer of mystery. I did find the couple of twists, with Gideon's sister-in-laws apparent feelings, and with the relationships of the other vendors and their family members, to keep me invested in completing this book.
My only suggestion in this one would be for the author to allow a more natural transpiring of emotions and relationships, as she normally does in previous books. I felt myself getting utterly frustrated with Gideon and Fern, and thinking "how can they be this dense" more often than I would have liked. That bit of an attempt to hold back in the moving toward a climax was just a bit too much effort.
I will continue to seek and read future books by Ms. Good, as I truly do enjoy her books. This just wasn't one of my most favorites for the reasons given.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Kensington Books through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
A sweet, clean, and wonderful story, I enjoyed reading Fern and Gideon's tale. They grew up with each other, but as adults they liked each other, but neither of them knew the other one's feelings. With the great responsibility that Gideon has undertaken, he feels that he can't have a relationship with anybody, until he can pay off the debts his brother had left behind. As the story continues, things change and become easier to work with. Excellent story I enjoyed very much!
Fern runs a bakery in the market place, and Gideon runs a fried chicken stand. A good Amish romance story. Most of the issues are on his side, as he hesitates to court her because of financial issues and guilt, and she is struggling to keep her stand when the marketplace owner triples the rent and deal with her younger brother. I liked the story overall, and would highly recommend it and the author.
There is trouble at the farmers market! Gideon, Nick and Fern have had stands at the market for generations and now Mr. Russell is intent on destroying what the generations have built.
Gideon has always come to the rescue of those around him. He wants to help his friends after they have lost their stands at the market. Gideon enjoys Fern but has so many other things weighing him down.
This was a fun book to read with lots of unexpected surprises. I really enjoyed the characters Gideon and Aidan.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the arc. The opinions are my own.
