Turtle in Paradise by Jennifer L. Holm is about a girl named Turtle. When her mom gets a job in which Turtle cannot be near, she gets sent to live with her aunt and cousins. While she is there, she encounters family members she has never known about. She goes on adventures and is very inquisitive. I have not read the other version of this story, so I cannot compare this graphic novel version to it. I did enjoy the illustrations. The text and pictures were visually appealing and easy to follow. I also enjoyed reading about Turtle. Her name is quite symbolic. While she appears to have a tough shell as she navigates through life's ups and downs, she does also have a vulnerability to her. Great character and story.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
Kids will enjoy this historical fiction story told in graphic novel form. It would make a great bridge to use with the full text book.
I haven't read the original novel this graphic novel adapts, but I bet it's lovely. This was a sweet story about family and life in depression-era Key West. The artwork brings it to life and cleverly makes the objects of a lot of nicknames and local slang more clear.
As someone who really loved Turtle in Paradise the novel by Jennifer L. Holm I was curious to see how I would feel about the graphic novel, but I loved it just as much. I loved how Turtle comes out of her shell down in the Florida Keys. I loved how colorful the art work was. I loved it all.
I should start by saying I have never read the book that this graphic novel is about but I did really enjoy this. I thought the story was really sweet and heart breaking and places. I enjoyed following Turtle on her adventures and seeing what her and the boys got up to.
The art style was also really good. I thought it was adorable and bright in a way that really fit the story.
This book is a great addition to the graphic novel classic collection. I am looking forward to its physical release.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the early review copy.
