This was my first book of the year and I loved it! The dialogue was fantastic! The characters were well thought out and were very distinctive. I am awaiting the second installment and can not wait to see what the characters are up to next!
The four main characters in this YA graphic novel felt so real and sympathetic, dealing with abusive or neglectful parents and loneliness, reaching out for connection via the burgeoning internet. There's some action, but overall it's a quiet, relationship-focused book set in the 1990s.
Absolutely lovely. Story and characterization come together beautifully in this coming of age graphic novel. Multiple points of view make for a layered and engaging story, yet it is told simply and effectively. I knew and loved the characters immediately - sometimes with just a look or a gesture, I instantly recognized them from my own life, from my own school years, or related to them myself. This is a story about the power of commitment and connection, of support and belonging, achieved through communication: online, in person, and through actions that demonstrate love.
Many thanks to #NetGalley for providing me with an advance copy of this title.
Set in the 90s, this graphic novel follows four teens as they become connected through BBS (dial-in Bulletin Board System). Each one of the characters is ostracized or an outcast in their own right, but they manage to become connected and help one another through the internet.
I loved the inclusion of the 90s BBS and I felt so sorry for Allison as she dealt with her abusive father. However, there wasn't much plot and this ended at a strange place. Overall, this was just an okay read.
Set in the '90s during the early days of the internet, Incredible Doom follows the lives of four small-town teens and the unexpected (sometimes risky) ways they connect via dial-up a text-based bulletin board system, or BBS. Although there are darker moments, the accompanying code screens will be nostalgic fun or just simply insightful for many.
