To Whatever End is the story of Quinn, an ordinary girl cursed with the ability to see the end of her relationships with anyone she ever meets from one touch. Having sworn off love, Quinn finds her life upended when she brushes hands with a stranger in a museum and finds that he will fall in love with her and die in her arms. Desperate to change his fate, Quinn finds herself falling hard for him as she tries to figure out why he is destined to die and if there is any way on earth that she can stop it.
This book was a quick and easy read, fitting a lot more into the romance genre than the fantasy genre, despite Quinn's curse. The development of Quinn and Griffin's relationship was sweet and entertaining, and seeing them flip so constantly between completely enamoured and forcing themselves apart was really compelling. It was also refreshing to read from the perspective of a character that was so committed to helping other people that she would do whatever she could to save Griffin, no matter the danger she was putting herself in.
In a number of ways, this book was quite predictable, and I foresaw the majority of plot twists very early on, but this thankfully did not take away from the story. If you're looking for something that will keep you guessing, this may not be for you, but if you want to read something light, romantic and with some thriller elements thrown in, I would definitely recommend it.

I had trouble getting into this book. Wasn't a fan of the flow or the writing. Just wasn't for me.
Quinn has spent her life cursed with the ability to see how every relationship she has ends by a single touch, causing her to avoid any connections with others for fear of the end. When a new boy shows up in her life, Quinn ends up seeing how their relationship ends- with his death. Quinn will do anything she can to change the future even while all the odds are against her- and maybe she can protect her heart along the way as well.
I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this was a mystery story. I started the book thinking this was a YA romance with paranormal elements but really this was a time sensitive mystery where lives were on the line and the main character had to put together clues to save a life while trying to deny her feelings. This story was suspenseful and twisty, having lots of dangerous encounters as well as intense emotions to experience. I figured out the villain and their motivations pretty early on so that was not a surprise but I was still completely invested in the read as well as the character's well-being... and I was 100% hoping for a HEA to show up.
I enjoyed the story overall and would love to read more from this author in the future, this was a fantastic debt book. The pacing and the plot were well done, at times I was frustrated by Quinn's choices even while I understood her motivations. I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys mystery, romance, betrayal and suspense with just a dash of paranormal intrigue and the strange magic of curses.
Quinn is cursed. The first time she touches someone, through a handshake or accidentally brushing past a random stranger, she sees the last encounter she’ll ever have with that person. Naturally, she doesn’t have a lot of relationships, since she’s able to see things ending in flames with friends or boyfriends. When she meets Griffin at an art gallery, she’s horrified by a vision of him dying in her arms. It seems like their destinies have been entwined, since the last thing he says in the vision is that he loves her. Determined not to fall in love with him and to save his life whatever the cost, Quinn sets out to change the future–something she’s never, ever been able to do. I received a free e-ARC through NetGalley from the publishers at Entangled Publishing, LLC. Trigger warnings: death/parent death, guns, fire, severe injury, stalking, harassment, vandalism, threats.
This is probably what my friend Roberta over at Offbeat YA would call Contemporary With A Twist, which is one of my favorite names for one of my favorite genres. It’s pretty much just like our world with one important difference. In this case, it’s Quinn’s ability to see last meetings, a curse that’s been passed down (with slight differences) to all the women in her family. This is more than enough to drive the whole novel, at least for me, and I was interested every time we got new information about it through Quinn’s interactions.
More importantly, though, it’s interesting to see how her ability has shaped her character. I’ve sometimes imagined I could see the ends of relationships as soon as they started, and it’s not great for relationship longevity. But Quinn actually can see them and, most of the time, she doesn’t see a reason to bother at all. (I think there’s a mistake in thinking that something isn’t worthwhile just because it ends, but that’s not really the point of this story.) She’s shut herself off from most people outside of her grandmother and her best friend, Olivia, and I like her arc about fighting to change what seems like a forgone conclusion.
I’m less enthusiastic about the romance, but that’s typical for me. I like Quinn, and I like Griffin, even if he’s a bit standard as a love interest. He apologizes for assuming pretty girls don’t go to museums (major ick), so I guess that’s character development. Olivia’s boyfriend, Jack, brings an interesting dimension to their group, and most of the mystery centers around him and Quinn/Griffin’s stalker. Things are a tad bonkers by the end, but I wasn’t expecting a book that starts with a curse to stay within the realm of possibility. It has a sweet romance and enough mystery to keep things moving, and that’s plenty for me.

Interesting concept that had me intrigued from the moment I read the blurb. Very emotional and lots of twists and turns. I wasn't sure if I would like this book because it's YA, but the suspense made diving in worth it! Will look forward to reading more from this author!
3.5/5*
After reading the synopsis of To Whatever End, I was really intrigued and I wanted to know what this story was about. So I requested the ARC and I’m so happy I did! I enjoyed reading this book and I really liked the concept. I’ve never read a book by Lindsey Frydman before so I was extra excited to read this book. I love discovering new authors.
I really liked the main characters. I liked Quinn because of her passion for photography, and I couldn’t not like Griffin. From the moment we first read about him in To Whatever End, I instantly fell in love with him. He’s just so cute, and I couldn’t stop smiling. I also like his background story and that he wanted a fresh start. I think we can all relate to that!
I liked To Whatever End, but I do think it was a bit predictable. I also wished we had some more background on her visions and I would’ve loved another chapter between the last chapter and the epilogue. But besides that, I think that To Whatever End was a good and easy read, and I will definitely check out the other book by Lindsey Frydman.
While sold as a fantasy, this one slides more into the paranormal category and that with only a slight tip-toe over the 'paranormal' line. But young adult romance fans, who enjoy a dash of thriller/mystery tension, will enjoy this one quite a bit.
Quinn carries a several generation old curse, which allows her to snap a vision of the last time she'll see someone when she touches them. This has completely ruined her dating life, since she seen every break-up before it happens. Every attempt to change the results has been fruitless, but when she touches a 'hot' guy at the museum and sees him bleeding out in front of her with a gunshot wound to the gut, three words turn her world upside down—I love you.
If I would review this one as a fantasy (as it's sold), I'd have to mark it down a star just for not meeting that mark. But as a romance with a bit of tension, it's an engaging read. Quinn has a curse (as her family calls it), which hits one female of every generation a little differently. Her version has her seeing the last seconds she meets with someone, when she touches them. While this aspect alone could open up all sorts of plot directions, the author chops it off before it has a chance to bloom. As the reader, we only see the curse's vision the first time Quinn touches the hero of this tale. There's also basically no background given as to the origin of the curse or any other information surrounding it. Honestly, I found it disappointing that the only thing which seemed to interest Quinn was its hit on her dating life. But shove that all aside, view it as the beginning point to a romance (and not a fantasy), and the rest works more than well enough to create an intriguing read.
Quinn is a kind hearted young woman, who is easy to root for since she finally has a shot at love...something she thought was beyond her reach. Her hopes are more than understandable, and she's got the hero to slide right along into every emotional scene. He's sweet, a little dorky-ish, packs secrets, and makes her heart race the second he nears her. It's a bit of love at first site, but thanks to Quinn's concerns about seeing his approaching, violent death, even that works well.
The mystery end carries enough thrills to make each page interesting. It wasn't hard to figure out where the whole thing was going, but that didn't make it any less fun to read. I would have liked to have seen a bit more depth from the other characters... and maybe, more characters , since that would have opened the pool of 'who dun-it's quite a bit, but so, it was a very enjoyable read.
This is an interesting story about a girl who can predict how any of her relationship is going to end. Her ability has affected her life a lot, and not in a good way. She is beginning to realize that love or happily ever after are not in the cards for her. And then she meets Griffin. Her perspective on life starts to change. She begins to understand that even though she can never change the future, but still she has a choice. She can either deal with whatever comes her way of walk away, letting someone else deal with the situation.
Griffin is intrigued by the beautiful girl he meets in an art gallery. Soon the two are spending time together and exploring their relationship, but the future holds, he doesn't know. All he knows is that he likes her and wants to be with her.
It's a fast-paced and well-written story. Less of a fantasy and more of a mystery, I enjoyed reading it. Although I think that we didn't get to know more about Quinn's mysterious ability (or curse as she calls it) but I find the premise very interesting. I also loved both the main characters and found it to be a quick read. I'd definitely recommend it to others, especially to readers who enjoy a good YA novel.
Thank you so much @entangledteen for sending a free e-arc in exchange for an honest review!
Wow, this book was all over the place, but in a good way. It was such a quick read, but I loved the pacing of it. It had me on the edge of the seat, wondering who was doing all these horrible things to Griffin & Quinn.
I will say, it was just a little predictable, but that didn't bother me at all. The story kept me wanting to continue from chapter to chapter, I just could not stop reading until it was finished 😂.
I would recommend this to anyone looking for a quick contemporary with a bit of a mystery element!
Quinn has inherited a curse that follows the females in her family. This curse shows the future but each female’s version is a bit different from the others. Quinn’s mom saw choices and Quinn sees the death of each person she touches. She meets Griffin at the museum and then discovers he’s her new neighbor. He’s moved from states away for a fresh start. Quinn’s vision of Griffin shows his death by a gunshot, in the near future. Quinn struggles to change his fate and the two of them go on a relationship roller coaster. In the meantime, someone is doing cruel things to Griffin and Quinn and she’s determined to get to the bottom of it all. Someone breaks into Griffin’s apartment and smashes his guitar into pieces and later cuts the brake line on his car. The pranks don’t end there. The problem is revealed and Quinn is devastated by what she finds out. The story is an interesting mystery with a touch of romance, 4 stars!
I enjoyed this one. The description of this book really appealed to me from the start so I thought it would be worth a try. I was really curious about how the ability to see when your relationship with someone would end would play out in a story, and I think that it worked pretty well. This was a really quick read, and I found it to be quite enjoyable.
When Quinn touches someone for the first time, she sees how that relationship will end. She knows if it will be a long term relationship or if it will end quickly. I thought that this was a really interesting ability and it made sense that it would have a big impact on Quinn's life. Do you go out on a date with someone you know will break your heart? Unfortunately, even though she knows what is going to happen, she can't do anything to stop it.
Quinn meets Griffin at an art gallery. They are both there to find inspiration: Quinn for her photography and Griffin for his music. When she touches him, she sees that he will die soon while telling her that he loves her. As fate would have it, she soon learns that he lives in the same apartment complex as she lives with her grandmother. They are drawn to each other and love spending time with each other but Quinn is afraid that she might be the cause of his upcoming death.
I liked the characters in this book. Quinn had been through a lot in her life and her special abilities have not made things any easier for her. Griffin has had his own challenges and is trying to start fresh on his own in a different state. It really seemed like these two needed each other and I thought that they were good together. Quinn's friend Olivia was a good source of support for her and her new boyfriend, Jack, seemed like a good guy as well.
I do wish that we would have had the chance to see Quinn have to deal with her powers more often in this book. I only remember it happening twice in the story and I think it would have made the story more interesting if it came up more often. I didn't find the mystery to be too hard to figure out but I was still eager to see how things played out. There were a couple of times in the story when things felt a little too convenient but nothing that I couldn't look past.
I would recommend this book to others. I thought that this was a fun story with an imaginative premise. I wouldn't hesitate to read more of this author's work in the future.
I received a digital review copy of this book from Entangled: Teen via NetGalley.
Oh my word!
So, I got SO caught up in this one, it was hard to put down to do normal every day things...like work, or household chores, or pretty much ANYTHING other than read this book! Somehow I managed it, but it wasn't easy, nor my first choice. Now about that story...
Quinn's predicament is definitely something to shoulder. A blessing or curse, however you view her "power" is in the eye of the beholder, but what she's seen most recently is definitely on the darker side of things. A death, but not just any, nor was it any old way, or of someone if no importance. No, this was someone she had yet to know, and if her vision is anything to go by (which it always is) yet to LOVE. How's THAT for a fortune cookie that NO ONE wanted ever? Yeah, exactly. So, how to fix it? CAN it be fixed? Is anything actually broken or are we embarking on a Final Destination-esque journey that will only end when everyone is taken out? Questions aplenty, but answers are few and far between.
Watching Quinn and same said mysterious stranger turned potential love (aka Griffin) was SO HARD. I mean, would knowing your relationship has an expiration date help or hurt? What about is only ONE party knows? Yeah, my heart bled for Quinn...but Griffin's life wasn't a walk in the park either, and as we learn more about him, we see where the deadly turn of events could be coming from. Word to the wise? Literally about halfway through...there's a twist you won't see coming. Promise. Now, later on, there's a few turns that I did see coming, but that could be because of the books I've read previously making me already suspicious of those that your average reader may not be (and since none of you are average, I'm pretty sure you'll pick it up to), but it doesn't ruin anything because, just like Quinn's visions, you just won't believe the outcome until you've read it with your own eyes. Love is lost for good, life is lost for some, and eyes are opened to things that were kept hidden like so many skeletons in a closet.
All in all, it was definitely a title I enjoyed, but even the best of them can have tiny flaws. One small mention of a minor pet peeve for me...Quinn's time spent in her head. Honestly, a big part of the book is her going back and forth about whether to tell or not, can she do anything or not, bemoaning her fate, and the lot. It's not that I didn't love the girl, but I do think that she might have been able to be investigate everything in the real world as opposed to her mind. Anywho, obviously from my gushing words above, you can tell it was only a speed bump in my reading adventure because my FINAL VERDICT is that I loved it! I would highly recommend it to Contemporary Young Adult fans who love a bit of mystery, romance, friendship, and something DARKER that doesn't go BUMP in the night, but BANG!
I wanted to really love this book, the concept is so intriguing, but unfortunately it didn’t hit a high note for me.
I thought, as I said, the concept was just so cool but it wasn’t really explored like I thought it could have been. It was more there as a device to first get the MC’s together and then to keep them apart without any real explanation.
I also missed chemistry between the Mc’s and wished it had been less about the “vision” and more about them than it was. There was so much “I like him but I shouldn’t” going on which led to a lot of back and forth with Quinn - realistic for sure, but tough to read.
I did enjoy the elements of danger and how that helped the progression of the plot. Her friendship with her BFF was fun and I liked that it was set in Dayton since I lived in a suburb and could relate. Griffin also seemed like a nice guy - a little odd we never find out how old he is which feels weird since she’s 17...? But I liked him.
I do wish her Grandmother had been more involved as well because it seemed very unbelievable that she wouldn’t have been called to the scenes of some of what happens (won’t say so I won’t spoil it).
All in all, aside from the language which I thought didn’t add anything, the idea was really interesting for the plot, but the execution wasn’t exactly what I’d expected.
❗️Lots of language in this one.
My rating: 2.5-3*
Thanks to the publisher for this review copy.
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Teen Publishing for this free e-arc. This was a very cute romance plot with a bit of magic thrown in. It's not my normal read but I'd recommend it for older teens that love this type of book. The plot is very original in my opinion and even though I guessed the ending very early on, a less experienced reader would definitely love the twisty ending thrown their way. A good cast of characters with an original plot is enough for me to like a book!
I fell right into this book and read it in one sitting. I thought the premise of this book was so unique and fun to read. It was definitely mysterious and kept you on your toes.
The only thing I didn't enjoy was the dialog and romance as much as the rest of the book. They didn't seem to have chemistry, they kept pushing each other away and they seemed to misunderstand or make each other mad more often than not. I think it was supposed to add to the angsty romance vibe but did not work. That being said I did like the characters and wanted to know what would happen. The plot twist halfway through was well done and then they kept coming.
I think this will be a popular book amongst teens as it has a lot of different aspects with wide appeal. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this one early!
TO WHATEVER END was a mysterious and quick read that has all the feels of a contemporary romance, but with a little paranormal twist thrown in for good measure.
Quinn is cursed — through a simple touch, she has the ability to see the last encounter she’ll have with someone. Normally they’re innocuous — someone walks out the door and that’s it. Or she sees her best friend, old and grey and obviously living a long life. When she meets Griffin, all that changes. Their ending is far from innocuous and Quinn has to figure out a way to change it. The only problem is you can’t change the future. But maybe it can be manipulated, and that’s what Quinn is determined to find out.
This was such a compulsive, addictive book that I finished in a day because I wanted to see how it would unfold. Though I did find the story to be a little predictable, it was still very much enjoyable and there were still plenty of twists and turns thrown in around the mystery to make me doubt my predictions. My only complaint was the paranormal aspect — while it was an appreciated little tidbit, I wanted to know more about the curse and the hows and the whys surrounding it. But all in all, I appreciated the inclusion of it, even if it was just a minor focus.
All told, TO WHATEVER END was a fast-paced, mysterious, romantic book and certainly one I’d recommend for anyone who loves both contemporary and paranormal romance. 3.5 stars.
Quinn has the ability to see people's future when she touches them, she calls it a curse that's been passed down in her family. One day she touches a boy and sees his death and the story takes off from there
I ended up not liking this book. I wish there was more with the powers. I didnt connected with the characters, they seemed juvenile even though they were supposed to be seniors in high school.
I thought the concept was there I just think it needed something more.
-thank you netgalley for an advanced e-arc-
*Thank you NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
To Whatever End was a really good idea that fell a little flat for me. I really wanted this to be a 5 star read, because this is the type of book I usually like. The story was interesting, but the execution felt a little rushed and not fully fleshed out. The romantic relationship felt really superficial and I wasn't really convinced of the chemistry. The characters always felt on the verge of having depth, but just not quite hitting it for me. On the positive side, it was an easy read, it didn't drag, there weren't parts I felt like skipping. The mystery/suspense element was good. I think I was just hoping for a little bit more.
Thank you Entangled Teen & NetGalley for sending me ARC of To Whatever End by Lindsey Frydman. All thoughts & opinions are my own.
To whatever end follows Quinn, a teen cursed with always seeing how people will leave her. When a chance encounter with a (very cute) stranger leaves her spinning and seeing him die in her arms, she tries to race against the unknowing clock to stop his death, even if she's the reason it happens.
I'm going to kick this off by saying I loved the premise to the book. Was a bit upsetting finding out a sweet guy with a guitar was going to die in the first chapter but suffice to say I made sure to pray to the almighty book gods and Lindsey Frydman that it wouldn't happen. Quinn was a realistic main character and the love plot was so sweet that I will officially be spending all my life wandering museums with my camera hoping to meet the love of my life (as if I don't do that already). Griffin made an ADORABLE love interest with a fully formed backstory and motives for his actions. Their chemistry worked really easily together and he kept Quinn tethered when it seemed like she might explode and vice versa (like all YA protagonists do at one point or another). The shocking plot points were surprising, but not completely insane. You can really see the effort put into the tiny moments building up to big reveals.
I really just wish we could've tapped more into the curse aspect of it all and gotten a more detailed backstory because that was such a draw for me and probably so many others! We were dropped right into the fire (book reference pun intended) and I would've loved to see some more of the backstory and premise if only for a chapter or two!
Overall a great novel and I'm so in love with when authors add their own little quirks and personalities into the books, it makes it so much more fun when I just think "she's like me! I take photos!! I like coffee to an oddly worrying extent!" I can't wait to see what Frydman does next especially working with such a talented publishing house!
Quinn has been cursed with the ability to see a vision of how someone will leave her after she touches them for the first time. It has already had a huge effect on her life, but things get even more complicated when she meets Griffin. Her vision is him telling her he loves her as he dies. Now a number of issues arise. Should she try to stop his death? Can she stop his death? And who is trying to kill him and why?
I was really drawn in at the beginning and could see the spark between Quinn and Griffin. As the story progressed, though, it felt like there were two different stories with too many things going on. That took me out of things a bit. I did love the originality of the story and the paranormal/curse aspect. I would definitely be interested in trying another book from the author!
