While I enjoyed the book, it was my least favorite by Lauren K. Denton. It just didn't have the feel or tone of her previous books that I have come to love.
I am convinced this is a “not you, it’s me”. I am single, and I am realizing I struggle with storylines that have heavy marriage plots. I also enjoy a bit more gritty storylines than the fresh, beach read feel.
DISCLAIMER: I am not at all the target audience for this book.
This is a book filled with characters you can connect to . It has a timeline of past and present. I really loved the plot and found myself talking to the characters.
Denton never disappoints. This is perhaps one of her more complex storylines. It pulled me in quickly and I couldn't read fast enough. The choices we make at twenty do affect us.
Choices made in youth showed its after effects in adulthood. secrets abounded between the couple after decades of marriage. This was a slow but enjoyable read.
Thank you to the author, Th0mas Nelson and NetGalley - I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I was not familiar with the author and her "signature Southern style", but the premise sounded interesting and the book cover sealed the deal for me. This was a slow-paced look into family dynamics where what is on the surface and what might be tacitly understood, but is never discussed, diverges. I liked the way the author gave space to each of the main characters - I felt as though I got to know both of them and understand what shaped them, drove them, and held them back. Although not much happens and it does drag a bit, this is a story with emotional depth and a satisfying ending - well worth reading.
This story deals with decisions we make and how they can affect our lives even years later. The trust we place in the people who are special to us is sometimes tenuous. While Edie got on my nerves with her immaturity … even after she was an adult … she did redeem herself by the end. This was a story of love, marriage, trust, and family. Wait to see how Mac and Edie deal with the life changing secret that is revealed.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ecopy for my Kindle.
I have purchased and read all of the author's books. This one was my least favorite. Not that it wasn't a good story, but it was for a younger crowd and more on the romance side.
This was a great book with relatable characters. Once I started it I could not put it down. I enjoyed the dual timelines that told the story of the relationship between Mac and Edie. The book did leave me with some questions, but overall it is a thoughtful and well written book by the fabulous Laura Denton.
This was definitely one of the best books I have read this year... I did managed to finish this book within a few hours. It was captivating and difficult to put down.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND
The One You’re With, by Lauren Denton, tells a very interesting tale. Mac and Edie Swan seem to have a perfect life; however, when a young woman suddenly shows up at Mac’s medical practice, he realizes his past has reached out to bite him. There is no doubt this woman is his daughter. She looks exactly like Mac!
Now Mac must fill Edie in on additional details from his college days; however, Edie has a secret of her own, that has yet to be revealed!
Watch and see how this family and many of their acquaintances respond to these changes!
I have enjoyed previous books by Lauren K Denton and her newest release, The One You're With was no disappointment. Four stars.
A story about relationships, marriage, and secrets from the past. It is down to earth and beautifully written. Sure to stay with you long after you have finished.
Many thanks to Thomas Nelson Fiction and to for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
Good story, great character development. I would have liked to have some character development with Kat, who we just saw in Mac's past story. The issue of a previous romance, unexpected pregnancy and all that follows was very well described. Definitely will recommend for purchase!
Mac and Edie Swan both have secrets they would like to keep hidden. Then, Mac gets a surprise visitor to his clinic and Edie has a surprise encounter with an old friend of her and Mac's. These two encounters can't be chance can they? And how will they fair through this storm in their life? They have children to think about so their decisions may not be ones they would have chosen years back when their secret summers took place.
I don’t read much southern fiction and this read was just okay for me. I liked the idea of Mac and Edie, married for close to two decades but originally high school sweethearts. They live in Alabama; their family and careers look perfect from the outside. Then comes a small hand grenade lobbed at their marriage, all stemming from one summer when they were twenty years old and on a break. My final read for October, I may have liked this book more if I didn’t find Edie’s character so annoying. Mac was easygoing and likable. Edie came across as self absorbed and unforgiving. Thank you to @netgalley and @thomasnelson for the complimentary ARC. All opinions are my own. #netgalley #goodreads #bookreviewer #bookstagrammer #booksandmrdarcy #withhernosestuckinabook❤️📚
High-school sweethearts Mac and Edie Swan lead a seemingly picture-perfect life in the sleepy-sweet community of Oak Hill, near Mobile, Alabama. Edie is a respected interior designer, Mac is a beloved pediatrician, and they have two great kids and a historic home on tree-lined Linden Avenue. From the outside, the Swan family is the definition of “the good life.” And life is good—mostly. Until a young woman walks into Mac’s office one day. A young woman whose very existence threatens all Mac and Edie have built and all they think they know about each other.

I really enjoyed this book! A lot! In the heart of it, the book is about marriage and how the decisions of the past can come back to haunt us. I don’t think there is such a thing as the perfect marriage or the perfect family, and in this book Denton let’s us inside the Swan family and through glimpses from the past we start to see that perhaps this marriage wasn’t build on a strong foundation after all. Can love and the commitment we make be enough to stay? This was an easy, yet contemplated read! It really got me thinking about my marriage and what I would do if something like this happened to me. I’m adding more Denton books to my TBR!
Apparently I have been missing out my entire bookworm life on the gold that is @laurenkdentonbooks
This book, y’all. I devoured it & loved it wholly. With alternating timelines & perspectives, a love triangle, family drama; it was hallmark (but better if you can believe I’m saying it) with a sweet southern twist. Excuse me while I go search every Denton book I can find to get more of this writing & these type of stories.
Thank you so much to @uplitreads & @laurenkdentonbooks for allowing me to be a part of this campaign.
All the stars!
I had SUCH a hard time finishing this novel. The writing is stunning, it had NOTHING to do with that at all. I really struggled with their marriage. Feeling it was strong and settled, then having these flashbacks of "what ifs" and then the daughter...
Ugh, it was heartwrenching. I felt like both meant well, but it was so hard to read for me. I just kept thinking about "what if that would have happened to me?!" and it was an overwhelming thought to have that come and rock my world.
The dual perspectives and timelines meshed together very nicely, and it of course kept me reading!
I thought the writing was phenomenal, and I will still 100% recommend the book- I am thankful I actually learned more about myself in the reading process. That will certainly make me a more cognizant person!
Highly recommend the author and will read more of her books for sure!
Evie and Mac believe they have the perfect life. High school sweethearts (with only a small break in their relationship before College), successful career people and proud parents of Thomas and Avery. Then a young pregnant girl enters their life and threatens to tear apart everything they have worked for. Whilst trying to deal with it, Evie is also reunited with their old friend Graham. A brilliant story of families, love, what could have been and moving forward, Loved it.
